"give a good witness" today i made an effort to wave to my neighbour, not because i particularly wanted to or like him, but had a feeling i needed to "prove how nice i was or to give a good witness" .
habits die hard, this follows on from the guilt thread.
i still feel that *i put on a front, i cant be myself, in case i do or say something that could bring reproach, what the hell on i dont know i havent been to a meeting for over a year no one here knows i was a witness.
...and another thing! you're giving a good witness, as you said, to the fact that non-JW's are good people too. I strongly object to the notion (amongst JWs) that they have are the only people who 'do unto others as you would be done to' (or whatever the phrase is). If you were frostier, it would confirm to the JWs that they are right, and suggest to non-JWs that when you leave you become 'hard'.
I should start taking my own comments to heart. I can be a right bitch now!

Hi there, I think the urge to be 'nice' even when you REALLY don't want to isn't a JW thing, it's a personality thing, so you're stuck with it!
I think there are lots of reasons for it: wanting to avoid pointless enemies and confrontations, however minor; being a decent, sensitive and perceptive person; knowing you'll feel bad if you don't acknowledge someone etc.
All in all, I think it's a good sign, as long as you make sure people don't take kindness for weakness when they're being a pain in the ****. It's different when people are being hostile, manipulative or unreasonable. Save your energy for those situations and keep waving to the neigbour!

I am married to an atheist, which is almost ideal, but sometimes it might be easier (for me) if he was an agnostic, then I wouldn't seem so caraaazy...If I had to choose again, I think I'd be happiest with a non-religious type, but for the right person I would accept any denomination as long as the person didn't veer to the right politically-speaking, or harbour any notions of a conversion for me...

If I had more disposable income I'd indulge myself in Jo Malone (amber and lavendar) or a chocolatey Annick Goutal, or the Miller Harris tangerine one...etc etc. At the moment, I am wearing Stella McCartney, which I love. (to pre-empt the inevitable perv questions: yes, I am wearing clothes too...)
i, damselfly, can not knowingly eat the little squiggly, umbilical cord things in eggs.
i have to very carefully separate the whites from the yolk and remove the squiggly bits with a knife.
i get gaggy just thinking about them.
Elsewhere, misanthropic, thom, damselfly - oh yes! After too much time with other people I feel the need to lie down in a darkened room. I did think I might be an actual misanthrope for a while, I can be so anti-social...spending time alone is so under-rated. Same goes for the 'phone. It's very rare that I answer...I'm not sure if it's laziness or neurosis, just call me Greta.

This board is having a bizarre flashback effect. Yesterday, out of the blue, I remembered that old purple songbook we used to have, before the hardback orangey one came in...and 'Listening to the Great Teacher' etc etc. I was always fascinated by the book (non)design. Did anyone see an album by a band called Polvo in the 90s? They totally ripped off an image of the 'wild beast' for their record cover - it was straight out of one of the books.
