here's a few more: 1. Tribe Called Quest Lyrics from the song "The Chase Pt 2" "Me not deal wit no changaram, bangaram business I got soul on a hymn, like Jehovah's got the witness" 2. Far Side Comic Two suited persons can be seen walking towards a house's front door and inside are a family of blobs (the cartoon caption reads "The Blob family at home"). One member of the Blob family is turned to the rest saying "Jehovah's Witnesses! Quick, make like bean bag chairs". 3. The Eels' (alt rock band) song titled "Jehovah's Witness" Lyrics: Jehovah's witness leave me alone Jehovah's witness i'm not at home Keep on a-knockin' and ringin' the bells Knockin' your way straight to hell Jehovah's witness let's not pretend That for one second you are my friend Knock on my door and i'll turn out the light Close the curtains and turn in for the night Jehovah's witness why must it be Just when i'm feeling good i look out and see You walking up in your very nice suit Like i'm some old lady who'll give up her loot Jehovah's witness leave me alone Jehovah's witness i'm not at home

Mention of Jehovah's Witnesses in popular entertainment
by enderby ini don't know if this thread has been done before, but can anybody think of times that jehovah's witnesses were made mention of or joked about in music, tv, or movies?
for example, there are a couple of simpsons episodes, one were marge alludes to being so desperate for company that jehovah's witnesses ran away when she went to get them more lemonade.
another time, two jw's approach the simpsons' house and one turns to the other just before ringing the doorbell and asks "ruby, do you ever think we should get real jobs?".

And I can recall one from the X-Files when Mulder jokes about the possible cause of a destroyed doorbell being angry JWs. I can think of more...any one else?

Benefits of being a Dub as a child
by pratt1 in.
i can't think of many benefits of growing up a a dub but i do remember that i always viewed the other dub kids as brorthers and sisters and they became my support system amongst the "worldly people".
i remember going into a new neighhood or a new school and knowing that once i met the dub kids there, i would automatically have friends and i would not be alone.. this was especially comforting to me because i was an only child, and many times i entered into a new school not knowing anyone and sometimes being the only black kid in the class, my dub peers made me feel welcome and accepted me into the circle immediately.. for many years i feel special to be part of this worldwide brotherhood, and i am sure it is the reason why now i am inafriad of changes and/or new surroundings.. did you have similar experiences?.

i would say there are a couple of good things i got from being raised a dub: 1) i was taught that material posessions and social status are vain pursuits and are inherently empty; 2) be skeptical about science and social trends. (that is, at an early age i was trained not to be afraid to hold beliefs which are outside of the mainstream.) although, this was unfortunetly coupled with the inculcation that i should swallow whole everything from the Botchtower.

Penton & the drama this year
by carla inin the book apocalypse delayed by james penton he describes a 'drama' on pg 101-. the greatest emphasis was again placed on the preaching work, and jesus was described as a pioneer.in an assembly drama or 'morality play' on the apostle paul's companion timothy, young persons fresh from high school were strongly discouraged from attending academies of higher learning, and an always laten watch tower animosity towrads university education bacame more evident.. this sounds just like the drama from this summer.
i was under the impression that some jw's thought this was a new drama.
do they just recycle this stuff all the time?

the intellectual stagnancy of the borg and dub life is an insult to the human mind.

They have found me! (At last)
by PaulJ ini've just had a telephone conversation with my wife about 1/2 an hour ago.
we have had a visit from the local jw's this morning.
from the upstairs window my wife conducted a brief conversation where she basically told them thst she wasnt the best person to speak to, as her husband used to be a jw.

once, some dubs knocked on my door (some time after i had left the borg) and i told them that i dont go to their church anymore. they made the "leaving the truth" comment, which always pisses me off because it implies one is too intellectually feeble to comprehend what is "true". so, i laughed out loud at them and asked "what is truth?" (a la pilot) and they called me a "pilot" then went on to say that "the truth is jesus gave his life for us, the end of the world is coming..." so, i explained that the request for an account of truth is a request for a definition, not a series of instances of so-called true things. after i told them that, they said that the truth is whatever the borg says (they admitted it!), to which i asked if truth ever changes....they saw where this was going and said "well, it's obvious you've made up your mind" and left my porch. ha! wankers.

I can't decide what graduate program
by Soledad ini recently decided that i want to get my master's degree.
but i can't decide between the 2 programs that i am most interested in:.
social work or secondary education?.

i would say that if you don't know which graduate program you want to enroll in, you shouldn't go to graduate school yet. but, other important issues to consider are who you will be working in with in the college and do you admire their research? also, what are the statistics for job placement like in each program?

What silly rules did your congregation make up?
by weinermcgee inelders were famous for making up stupid rules with no bible base at all as an ego trip i guess, what were some of yours?
i am not talking about the stupid rules that we all had to follow, just the congregation specific silly ones.. 1. having to button your jacket while on stage (this was later changed due to all the elders having a beer gut).
2. suits only or no privledges.

i had an elder's meeting about my hair when i was 16. they said the hair behind my head wasn't allowed to touch my shirt collar. and when i was 14 the elder's told me not to wear my archie (from the archie comic book series) tie to meetings. and my brother had an elder's meeting for reading mad magazines when he was 14ish.
