HELP!
by bendineen inmy name is ben and i attend a high school in australia.
in my english literature class i sit next to a jw pole girl whom i have some grave concerns for, and the reason i am posting this thread is to see if someone can give me a reasonable explanation for her and her parents attitudes before i intervene.
the situation is this - this girl is failing her final year of high-school because her parents force her to distribute jw leaflets and do other such activities instead of doing homework, she also vocally refuses to vote (which is compulsory in australia) and criticizes australians for not accepting her family as one - even though they insist they are not.

Hi ben, and welcome to the forum, I hope we can help you.
I admire you for wanting to help this girl, but it won't be an
easy task to undertake. Her views on education are par for
the course with jws, I'm afraid. They are taught to live in
expectation of armageddon occurring any day, and are
mainly concerned with being found to be right with jehovah
when it strikes.I nust say I find her ideas on god preferring Communism to
Democracy somewhat bizarre for a jw, as they are a sect
that steers clear of political ideals. That isn't a watchtower
teaching, so I have no idea where she got it from.I wouldn't criticise her beliefs too much, that will merely
alientate her. Just try to be a friend, maybe even take
an interest in what she actually believes, and look for
opportunities to present themselves, if they do, to
challenge what she has accepted. You may find the
Quotes site, which is dedicated to watchtower publications
and highlights the many doctrinal flip flops they have been guilty
of over the years, useful, so I have provided a link to it below.http://www.quotes-watchtower.co.uk/home.html
Good luck!

What do you think is behind the watchtower change in 2008 ?
by 5go ini think it's an atempt to catch faders or atleast make active dubs feel special.
it also could be a cost cutting measure to though.
getting rid of the km's and even up awakes and watchtowers would save some trees.

I think it's mainly money, which seems to be behind most of the cutbacks these days anyway
There's also the aspect of control, which a lot of the wt study articles seem to be about these days. Most if not all of them must be almost meaningless to the general public, and are tools the org use to keep the faithful indoctrinated. I hate to think what the study articles in the non public wt will be like once this arrangement kicks in.

For what it's worth,.....
by Twitch ini was thinking about the various reasons i come to this site and felt the need to espouse some thoughts.
i shied away from this site at first for what now seems some rather silly reasons; as if there were things here i didn't need to know, lol.
but i did and do enjoy the scope of topics here, the intelligence, cameraderie and diverse opinions of the posters here.

It has been twenty years since I left and have come a long way in a lot of ways but still find something quite compelling in reading and sharing stuff with those who know what it was to be a jw
That's how I feel, and why I keep coming back here. It had been almost 6 years since I'd left before I registered here, though I'd viewed the site for a few years before that.
Even though I'd eliminated dubspeak from my vocabulary long before I came here, and had no doubts whatsoever about the wtbts being a cult, I have still derived a great deal of benefit from finally registering here, and being able to converse with people who have walked in the same shoes as me, as well as meeting a few in person, an opportunity I wouldn't have had if I hadn't joined.

Hi ninja, and welcome
That's how I generally tell my "story" if anyone asks. I usually say
I was a jw once, and now I'm not one, what more is there to say?I was on microphone duty a few times myself, wasn't it a privilege?
Almost as good as being an attendant, where you got counselled
by the elders to be friendly to visitors, and the sound desk, the best
job of all.How I don't miss those days.

Firstly, well done for showing your friend the truth about the wts,
you have done him a big favour. As for what to do next, personally I would direct him to this forum,
I'm sure he will enjoy it here, and there is plenty to read in the
Best of section for an exiting jw.I would also give him a few other links, such as freeminds, and
encourage him to do his own research in his own time.dedpoet

Whats the "rule" on shepherding calls?
by ButtLight ini dont remember that much, but arent they suppose to stop by at least once a year to df'd ones?
or did that change?.
its coming up to two years now since i was df'd, and not one elder has stopped by...........not that i want them to!.
-
dedpoet
Hi Buttlight,
This is a quote from the "pay attention" book, referring to visiting df'd ones
Once a year the body of elders reviews a list of those in
the congregation territory who are disfellowshipped ordisassociated. They will call on each one they select in
order to see if he wants to return. (w91 4/15 pp. 22-3)- The body will assign two elders to make each call,
preferably elders familiar with the case.During a brief visit or two, the elders can kindly explain
what the individual can do to return.- They will report the results to the Congregation Service
Committee, and the body will be informed at the next
meeting of the elders.

I guess they are failing in their duty as far as you are concerned. Personally, we asked them not to bother us, and they haven't

Sex in fast lane halts traffic on Israeli road
Sunday February 18, 03:53 PM
Click to enlarge photo JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli police investigating why a car was blocking traffic in the fast lane of a major highway on Sunday found a couple inside having sex.
A police spokesman said the female driver and her male passenger gave in to their passions without pulling over to the side of the road, causing congestion and leaving other motorists having to swerve to dodge their stationary vehicle.
A patrolman gave the woman a ticket for holding up traffic
I've heard of living life in the fast lane but.... -

Do you recall your "point of no return"?
by JH inwas there something special that happened, an event or maybe a deception, that triggered your point of no return as a jw.. .

I read Crisis of Conscience in the summer of 1999, while on holiday,
and knew it wasn't the truth.I was still a ministerial servant then, but came home and stood down
immediately. I never went in the ministry again, and left the organisation
altogether in November 1999.
