got a phone call from my son-in-law ron about an hour or so ago.
we haven't had a very good conversation for quite awhile.
you might remember my thread about my step grand kids being killed in an auto accident during hurricane katrina.. http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/18/97388/1.ashx.

i know i've seen both sides of the house-to-house argument.
of course, jws say it is approved in the bible while non-jws say it is the opposite.
but on reading in another topic i happened upon a quote implying paul wrote in favor of house-to-house preaching so i looked it up in the american standard version bible.. the ones i usually see that speak against going house-to-house are the following:.
Another point: Who says that ALL in the congregation are suppose to evangelize?
Eph. 4:11,12:
11And he gave some as apostles, some as prophets, some as evangelizers, some as shepherds and teachers, 12 with a view to the readjustment of the holy ones, for ministerial work, for the building up of the body of the Christ,
Not everyone was a prophet, or a shepherd, or an apostle.... and not everyone was an evangelizer, either, in the first century. But JWs tell you that if you do not preach, you are bloodguilty. Methinks not......

i have a bread machine and have been experimenting with it this week.
my first breads were really dense and heavy.
they were ok but definitely not great.. so i went to the books and they said the liquids need to be lukewarm not cold from the fridge.. so after yet another white bread heavy i just tried a raisin bread recipe.. ok i'm addicted.
Can anyone tell me how easy it is to get the ingredients and how to get healthy ingredients like whole grain? Also someone mentioned leaving it on at night to be ready for breakfast - there's no risk of it burning or anything then?
Here in the States, you can find all kinds of healthy ingredients at the health food store, even at some grocery stores. I've used a bread baking machine for years, it's absolutely wonderful! I have a model now with all kinds of settings, one for white breads, batter breads, whole grain breads, even one for just dough (doesn't bake the bread when it's done kneeding). I make pizza dough, then take it out and make homemade pizza.... mmmmm!
If you have a machine with a timer setting, you can set it so that your bread will be done when you wake up in the morning, when you get home from work, etc. It won't burn, it just turns itself off when the bread is done.
Have fun!

I'm leaving the JWs after being one most of my life and all of my 20 year marriage. My husband is an elder.
If you are married to a JW, he is considered the head of the household. It doesn't matter that you want to celebrate holidays... he has the obligation to forbid it in his home. A quote from the elder's manual, "Pay Attention to Yourselves and All the Flock", p. 95 under the subheading 'Apostacy' (as grounds for disfellowshipping from the JW congregation): "Celebrating a false religious holiday would be similar to performing any other act of false worship. (Jer. 7: 16-19)"
Also on the same page: "Idolatry. (1 Cor. 6:9,10; 10:14) Idolatry includes the possession and use of images and pictures that are employed in false religion." Your cross is considered an idolatrous symbol, and the possession of it is grounds for disfellowshipping from the JWs.
Those are just 2 examples. My point is that your boyfriend is not nearly as free as he may think to 'allow' you to raise children who celebrate the holidays, who take karate class, who attend church with you, etc. The suggestion to have your boyfriend read Franz's book "Crisis of Conscience" is a good one. You should read it together.
Good luck to you, whatever you do.

i remember one of my last talks, it was a bible reading, i was 15, and on crutches.
i tripped getting up on the platform and took the mic stand with me.
that was embarrassing.
The 'kid' stories got me thinking...
My son was about 2 or 3, just old enough to be expected to be quiet through the meeting and prayer. The final prayer that night was by a brother notorious for going on....... and on....... and on....... After enduring what he clearly felt was quite enough praying, my little son let out a loud sigh, followed by an even louder, "AMEN", in the middle of this brother's prayer. The people around us could hardly contain themselves.
Out of the mouths of babes....

My sister (a year younger than me) and I were often assigned to give talks together. My sister was always able to make me laugh, while she remained calm as a cucumber... always got me in trouble. It never failed, she would always do something to start me giggling on stage and my mother would give me a disapproving look when the talk was over....
I also remember a really embarrassing moment that happened when I was about 13 or 14 and new to pantyhose... I was visiting the ladies room, which was located in the back of the KH, right before the meeting started. I unwittingly tucked the hem of my dress into the top of my pantyhose, exposing my entire little panty-hosed butt, and strolled out into the hall just as the song was about to begin. I started down the aisle, feeling very grown up ... Fortunately, a kind-hearted sister grabbed me before I got too far and pointed out my 'wardrobe malfunction'....

i made a comment to my 15 year old son last night about the arrogance of the jw teaching that all non-jws will be destroyed at armageddon.
he responded that i am mistaken, that the jws teach that jehovah reads hearts, even of those who are being preached to today.
in other words, no one is 'written off' like that, and btw he hates it when i take a teaching i don't like and exaggerate it like that..... .
You guys are great... I just showed this to my son, and to my daughter. My son's response was, 'Oh... wow...ok... cool.' So we're all good, dude...
It's hard to argue with what's in print, and I really don't want to debate with my kids. I just want to drop small hints, small facts, and let them hopefully take root. My kids need to see the falsehood in the WTS themselves. They're not going to just take my word for it, nor do I think that they should. So while I avoid being confrontational with them about the WT (which is an exercise in self-control for me!), I feel like I have to point out the inconsistencies when the opportunity presents itself.
Thanks again to everyone!

His reaction surprised me, both because I'm not used to him defending the JWs, but also because he is still attending meetings (my husband makes the kids go), and so maybe I am remembering incorrectly. I have tried looking up specific information on Quotes' site, and on the WT library CD, but have limited time today and haven't found what I'm looking for. Since teenagers tend to have the attention span of a flea, I'd love to give him an answer to this before he completely loses interest in the topic.
Sooooo..... does anyone know what the JW teaching on this subject is? Preferably, what's in print?
Thank you in advance!!!
