I bought that crap about the 2 year education or trades jobs 10 years ago. And yes you can make a decent living by going into a trades job, I did and I do make a decent living. But it was not easy or simple as the WTBTS alludes. They mention 'plumbing' as if you can simply choose to be one and "poof" your now a plumber making lots of money and pioneering. I'm an electrician. It took 5YEARS of school and on the job training to reach journeyman level (until then you are not making anything comparable to a decent living). I know a lot of good plumbers/pipefitters. Their apprenticeship programs are set up exactly like an electricians. I spent just as much effort as I would have in going to college. It's far from the rosy picture of simplicity that the GB paints. And really how would they know any better....they're fed and clothed by the sweat of others.

Suitable careers for JW children to aim for!
by Gill inthe october the 1st watchtower has interesting views on the education of jw children.. page 30, in which one jw explains how he ended up in ft service says:.
'we did not associate with our school mates but only with those in the congregation who had good spiritual habits.'.
interesting as this shows judgmentalism and criticism 'even' in the jw congregation.. then on page 31 it explains how parents must offer their children, as early as possible, proper guidance in their choice of school subjects and vocation goals.. 'rather than choose academic subjects that are geared toward a university education, parents and children need to consider courses that are useful in pursuing a theocratic career.'.

I know exactly how you feel. When I graduated from high school I had a full ride scholorship because of grades, and winning at state level technical competitions. However being in a family of true believers I didn't go to college. Instead I applied for, and got into a Union Training program. The elders still looked down on me. I had school two nights a week, and worked a 40 hour work week. That was still too much for them, and I had all my privileges yanked. More than that, they looked at me with suspicion. I guess because I was now a member of ANOTHER organization which might also influence my thinking.
Anyway, 10 years later I've now seen the light. I'm starting back at school in 2 weeks. In a few years when I have my degree, and then big A still hasn't come what will they say?

I got the play-by-play from the recent District Convention from my wife (she went with her parents). Remember how you couldn't wait for lunch so you could cruise the hallway's to pick up chicks? Now it's all about the camera phones man. No more notepads to write down phone numbers, now it's a picture and a phone number in your phone. Makes me wonder how many Sony PSP's there were at this years conventions.

I haven't been to a meeting for 3 or 4 years now. (It's been so long I can't really remember). But lately I've considered going back. I mean it might be fun. There are all kinds of small thoughts that one could work into a comment during a Watchtower study. Maybe pointing out the thought that Homosexuality, or Bestiality didn't qualify for scriptural divorce. Or that accepting a blood transfusion was no longer a disfellowshipping offense. There's a whole list of legalistic things we do today, that weren't practiced in the first century......turning in field service reports would be one.....all that could be pointed out.
Anybody else ever think about it? Or maybe ever try it?

What Reasons Were Given to Prove that Armageddon Was Near?
by NeonMadman ini'm thinking back to all the "signs" that were cited - officially and unofficially - as reasons we knew that armageddon would be coming any day now.
there was a fellow in my book study 30 years ago who used to bring time magazine to every meeting.
to him, whatever was in the news that week was evidence that the system couldn't hold out much longer.

In my life it was always the dramatic INCREASE in the biblical signs since 1914. Also the constant teaching throught the 80's of the "Generation" prophecy. Everytime we would see a really old person in the truth, my mom would remind us of how close the end was. By the time the GB changed that teaching my family was so thoroughly indoctrinated that it made no effect.

New light, circular reasoning, and doctrine double standards.
by gringojj inthe wts claims they can make mistakes, fix them, and its all good because the bible says the light gets brighter.
thats all fine and good but if thats true then why wouldnt new light appy to all other religions?
how can the say that other religions are false because of what they teach?
-

Yup, their logic is circular. New Light is ok because we are God's channel, we are God's channel because we have new light. And around and around we go. I've come to realize that I am actually a JW from 50 years in the future! I'm just waiting for the GB's new light to catch up to me!

A thinking, reasoning person........
by wordlywife inthe debate with my husband over my step-daughter's df has begun, just barely.
he used a phase about me being "a thinking, reasoning person" and he doesn't understand why i don't "see" bible principles.
i said that phrase is an insult to me, and then it went sour.

Oh man I love the prodigal son parable! It really allows us to see just how much love God has for us all! The fact that it is completly out of line with Watchtower policies shows just how wrong they are. The Watchtower shows itself to be more like the Pharasees, and the Sanhedrin than the Father of the Prodigal Son!

The Unwritten JW Law
by Fe2O3Girl init is clear that there is no scriptural basis for disapproving of facial hair, coloured shirts or women wearing trousers at meetings or while preaching.
some of these rules seem to be regionally variable, but i think the rules on women's clothing are the same everywhere.. my question is - has there ever been any specific comments on any of these type of rules in any watchtower publication, ever?
and if not, how do we all know the rules?.

The thing that always got me was the facial hair. I meen Jesus is depicted in publications with a BEARD. But we can't wear one? I used to to buy that old logic about beards being unaccepted in the world, and that we would freak people out at the doors with one on. That's a bold faced lie. The former poster is right, beards and goetees are worn by many CEO's. In my line of work I have worked for six Electrical Contractors in the past 10 years. 4 of them (men who own their own companies, and who deal with the public on a daily basis) wore a beard or goetee.
It seems that the WTBTS are the only ones who are offended by facial hair. They are merely propetuating their own fears.
The first thing I did when I started bucking the Watchtower system, was grow a goetee. It was great fun to watch the elders squirm when they would run into me on a local jobsite!

If your husband left his JW wife to marry you, then he also should have been DFed. Upon re-entry to the BORG, he should have never been allowed to have responsibilities, until after his former wife died.
As such, he should have a little more empathy than he does. It sounds like he is trying to maintain a strict adherance to Watchtower policies to save position in the congregation. This is very common among members who have previously sinned and been openly punished in the congregation. They are more concerned with personal APPERANCES among their JW peers, than with anything else.
Such ones are some of the MOST succeptable to WTBTS programming. I doubt you will ever change his mind.
