The congregation I grew up had like five or six sisters, and one brother(gasp!), that would play the piano at meetings. I used to get excited when either of two sisters would play, because they would not necessarily embellish, but they played with such emotion. Our congregation held out for a while after most halls had switched over to the boring-ass recorded shite, but once we finally did, I remember losing a lot of the enjoyment that I got from singing at the meetings.
One of the quickest ways to find out if somebody you know used to be a witness is to hum a few bars from a kingdom song and see if their ears perk up.

So, why did I meet with the elders?
by lola28 inthis is my explanation as to why i met with the elders today.
when i agreed to meet with the elders last week i had made up my mind to just go in and be honest with them.
i was going to tell the elders that i no longer believed this to be the truth, and then i was just going to walk away.

I can totally understand why you did it exactly the way that you did. I believe that there is a difference between the elder body/organization as a whole and the individuals in it who are actually doing what they believe to be right. If I could go in and tell the elders that I know to shove their little legalistic manuals where the sun doesn't shine and not have to worry about the fallout and subsequent passive agression that would be visited on my family, I would do it in a heartbeat. But that's not the reality of my situation, or yours from the sound of it. So as it sits, I have absolutely no problem lying to a bunch of clueless, lying bastards in order to prevent the truth from being used maliciously against myself and those that I care about.
well done,

"Illustration: anyone can touch a musical instrument; much different from using or playing an instrument."
Well, I guess I must agree with them on at least that one point.

Cleaning the Kingdom Hall
by general inwhat part of the hall was your favorite part to clean?
was it the bathrooms, the main hall, library or lunch room perhaps...did people use cleaning the hall as an excuse to get self-righteous?
let me know.... lol.

I liked vaccuuming the stage when I was a kid, because someone always told us to get off it if we were on the stage after meeting any other time. It felt like I was breaking a rule and getting away with it. I remember pretending like I was singing *gasp* non-kingdom songs in to the mic once or twice, too. That didn't go over so well.

That's really good, Terry. I can tell you spent a lot of time perfecting the interplay between melodies, submelodies and harmonies throughout the track. Excellent piece of music.

Going along pretty well, I guess. Haven't been to a meeting in almost a year and a half. I live in a city, however, that though large, is full of a lot of witnesses I know. I've bumped in to a couple people I used to be friends with, though miraculously, the subject of the "truth" never came up. Probably on account of the fact that the people I've bumped in to are actually really cool people, and don't put as much stock in judging based on appearance or ignorance as many witnesses do.
Somedays I have a sadistic hankering for some jackass elder to call me or show up at my door, just so I could f*#& with his head. Luckily, the elders in the congregation I left never gave a shit about me, even when I really wanted them to. But that being said, I know that if they found out how I really felt, they'd surely take an interest, and try to boot me.

"Are Jehovah's Witnesses a sect or a cult?"

Hmm, yeah, first of all, sorry about posting the same thing twice. I went back to edit it to put my comments in red and inadvertently started a new thread.
Greendawn, I totally agree with you.
But above all is the emotional intimidation with their severe menacing God figure and the very dictatorial hierarchy that give the game away.
The psychological destruction that the witnesses inflict is their most telling aspect, in my opinion.
CD
Edited to add: also, I just wanted to make clear that I personally wasn't asking if they were a sect or a cult, but that that was the heading under which those paragraphs in the reasoning book were taken. -
