Nice bit of logical reasoning, thanks for that. I for one would not buy a used car from the WTBTS.

Frightened That JW's May Be Right?
by Englishman inis the wtbts qualified to run your life for you?
lets take a look.. i was just musing over the threads that relate to disciplining children by means of physical punishment.
there is plenty of material in the societies magazines that advocate hitting children, in the 60s publications there is even a picture of a man spanking a child.

honest question for unbiased bible scholars
by Bridgette inone of my interests is the study of people's belief systems (more from an anthropological standpoint).
i've just begun to delve into judaism.

Hi there
Good question, so here's my attempt at a response: I don't think Jesus was out to start a new religion, but rather to cut through all the ceremony and hierarchy of organised religion, replacing it instead with a direct relationship with God.
John the Baptist forged the way, baptising Jews for the forgiveness of sins, because all the old rituals and practices had become just that - lip service verging on superstition.
I believe he came to show a new way, something simple enough for everyone to get involved in without having to be a scholar or be born into the right family; he cut through barriers of race, religion and gender to get back to the original essence, that of a meaningful relationship between the Creator and the created. I certainly can't find anything in scripture to suggest that he wanted another religion, with titles and hierarchies and traditions and superstitions, to replace Judaism.
Hope that's some help, will continue watching this thread with interest!

Watchtower Study Oct 29 - Nov 4, 2001
by dungbeetle injehovahs blessing makes us rich.
the blessing of jehovah-that is what makes rich, and he adds no pain with it.
materialistic pursuits govern the lives of millions today.

Thanks Dungbeetle.Interesting to see them reiterate that 'wicked' people won't understand their preposterous doctrines, only those blessed enough to be hoodwinked and brain-washed. Interesting that the 'rewards' are field service and the opportunity to mislead other poor unsuspecting souls into this dangerous cult. Whatever happened to the Christian doctrine of having a one-to-one relationship with the creator of everything, through Jesus? Funny how they like to play that one down...It's really helpful to be able to keep tabs on what BS my parents are studying at the moment, so thanks again.

Brother vs Sister Committee Mtg
by ItsJustMe inam i reading the elders manual correctly?
a husband is expected to be involved in his wife's committmee meeting but there is no mention of a wife being involved in the husband's.
is this what our experiences were like?

Yup,us weaker vessels remain subordinate to our Lords and Masters even if they are in deep doodoo with the Mighty Elders; what place have we in men's business? Hell, we might make them uneasy be demonstrating emotion! And our husbands should not be put to shame in front of our inferior eyes!

How to spot a Kingdumb Hall...
by ISP inwell the dubs were told in no uncertain terms........... *** km 1/90 8 identifying kingdom halls ***.
identifying kingdom halls.
1 each kingdom hall should be clearly identified by an appropriate sign that reads: kingdom hall of jehovahs witnesses.. .

Tee hee!At least one of their rules has some logic attached to it. Are we into defacing their signs to read more honestly, eg, Dull Meeting Place of Deluded Idiots, or would that be really, really immature?

Meet the next generation of Jehovah's Witnesses!
by Mindchild inhonda shows off new version of its talking robot .
honda has unveiled an upgraded version of its walking, talking humanoid robot.. it says the new-look asimo can recite programmed phrases and negotiate the stairs better than its predecessors.. .
it is also much easier to operate.

Ah, but can they spy on their fellow robots and report any abherrent behaviour back to their superiors? Are they any good at smacking small children for getting bored during two-hour-long meetings? And are they programmed to locate and burn heavy metal records?:-)

child molestation
by edward gentry insince coming on this site about 3 weeks ago, i have noticed that there is a lot of recurring talk about child molesters/jws.. why is this?.
is there a high incidence of molestation in the jws?.
id appreciate some enlightenment on this.
-
ChimpGirl
Take a sexually repressed bunch of people, add more than your fair share of people from emotionally/psychologically disturbed backgrounds and your incidence of child abuse, of various types, is going to be above average. A culture of vigorous physical punishment can also tip over into other forms of abuse. NB This is not meant to insinuate that people with emotional and psychological problems are all latent child abusers!

The WWII Vets and Me
by COMF inon the way from seatac airport to my son's hometown, we decided to stop for dinner at a golden corral restaurant in maryville.
the place was packed and had a waiting line, and it turned out they were providing free meals to all veterans or currently active military.
there were quite a number of guys wearing their vfw hats or similar identification, and many more who were not, but were easily identified by age as probable wwii vets.. we sat among them and ate happily, and i took time to study the crowd.

Well done that person! And, if you'll pardon the phrase, what an excellent 'witness' to your son of normal, healthy morality, compassion and appreciation of others. You did a great thing.

Manic depression/bipolar disorder
by ChimpGirl inam i the only one here who's completely crazy?
got diagnosed bipolar earlier this year, broke the news to mother (staunch jw) and she just said it explained a lot.
thanks, ma, you can stop blaming yourself for me now!

Hi Introspection, thanks for your reply. Current research suggest that bipolar is like a genetic time bomb waiting to go off, and can be precipitated by stressful life events. Like living in fear of the end of the world, maybe? :-) There's also a high degree of co-morbidity with bipolar (co-existing conditions) including psychological disorders, some of which are caused by the coping strategies we evolve during our lifetimes. I see a psychologist and a psychiatrist - getting me diagnosed took years becauase my psychological profile is such a disaster, that that alone was enough to explain some of my behaviour. It don't explain raving psychosis, though. Whoops!

Yeah, Larc, I guess you're right, thanks for sharing your experience. I suppose part of me is still in denial and/or looking for an explanation as to why this has happened to me. I guess the Jdubs just caused collateral damage - I was punished for being ill, in effect - and then I caused myself more damage by rampaging through life with a variety of wild mood swings. I used to think that an okay thing about the JWs was that they provided a haven from reality for those who can't cope with it, but I am now convinced that the close scrutiny of members and controlling tactics over their minds and lives are enough to induce paranoia and guilt in the sanest individual. They hold people in the cult through fear, and that ain't healthy. Praise be we're out of it!!!
