Russell Family & Allegheny - Pittsburgh Census Records
by West70 ini have been trying to run down some info relating to just exactly when did joseph russell enter into the clothing business, etc., and it finally dawned on me that although joseph lists such as his occupation on the 1850 allegheny census, i do not ever recall seeing a business listing for "j l russell & son" until sometime in the 1860s or 70s.
if someone would care to shed some light, i will share that there are business listings for other "russells" who were in the clothing business in all/pitt during these same time periods.
i also suspect that "charles tays russell" may have been joseph's early employer who eventually financed him into his own store?

The SWAT team came with a bright light and loud noise, but narcotics officers say they arrested two Odessa males and charged them with felony counts of possession of marijuana without incident.
Acting on a search warrant, officers from the Odessa Police Department's Narcotics/Vice unit were assisted by the SWAT team who utilized a loud and bright diversion device and two canine units in making their arrests, according to Detective Jesse Garcia. Officers seized approximately five pounds of marijuana and $800 dollars, which Detective Gregory Travland said was the, "proceeds from the sales."
"People in the area were complaining about what was going on there," he said while pointing to the home at 801 25th St. where the arrests were made.
Garcia said that Jehovah Hernandez, 18, and his 16-year-old brother were arrested and charged with possession of marijuana. Garcia declined to release the name of the 16-year-old because he is a minor. In making the arrest, Garcia said the SWAT team used a diversion device that resembles a grenade.
"There's a really loud noise and a bright flash," he said, adding that it distracts people who law enforcement officials are attempting to arrest.
Garcia declined to comment on the details of what the probable cause was in getting the search warrant, but he added that the document will become a matter of public record.

by West70 insupposedly, the "grandfather" of the wbts/jws -- george storrs --, and the mormon prophet -- brigham young -- were distantly related - possibly third or fourth cousins.
i have not checked out this allegation.
maybe those more adept at genealogical research (and spelling it) might want to pursue whether storrs and young may have crossed paths at some point.

Back in the 1980s there was a small chain of seafood fastfood restaurants on the west coast called SKIPPERS, which had CaptainDs and LJS beat all to pieces.
However, in the early 1990s, they started having "sales" problems which they blamed on the influx of Mexican immigrants (etc) into the western states.
I believe a group of fastfood investors out of St. Louis tried to salvage the chain, but I haven't heard of SKIPPERS in a long time.
Did it survive under another name? -

mrs. anderson, i realize that trying to cover all bases in your pending russell bio would be impossible, but i do hope that you will be able to include a section on the first president of the watch tower society, william h. conley.
i hope that you have had a chance to research conley with some degree of thoroughness, so as to dispel some of the half-truths that some bible students and jws try to promote (such as that conley's age and health caused his inactivity with russell after 1881).

If there is anyone living in the Pittsburgh area, it would be interesting to know whether the CONLEY mansion is still standing.
Not only were the first "Bible Students" meetings held there, but it was large enough for Conley's own funeral.
After spliting from Russell, other ministers, etc held public meetings at the Conley home, including those from Europe who toured the U.S. -

Supposedly, the "Grandfather" of the WBTS/JWs -- GEORGE STORRS --, and the Mormon Prophet -- BRIGHAM YOUNG -- were distantly related - possibly third or fourth COUSINS.
I have not checked out this allegation.
Maybe those more adept at genealogical research (and spelling it) might want to pursue whether STORRS and YOUNG may have crossed paths at some point. Both also were Methodists in the early 1820s.
Finally, a weak JW-Mormon connection (possibly). -

I was shunned today in the post office.
by outoftheorg inwell this poor jw walked to the table to sort out the throw aways just as i headed there also.. i saw him and smiled, then he dropped his head to not look at me.
we both sorted out the things for the trash bin and were only about 20 or so inches apart.. i remember him coming to my house when my daughters were young girls and he wanted to get aquainted.. maybe i should have spoken to him but i just looked at him and he refused to even look back.. how sad.
he always has this really sad disappointed look on his face.

I have no doubt that YOU do not have all that it takes to make full use of my advice, just as others do not.
That still does not change the FACTS that shunning "works" only because:
1. The "shunnee" allows the shunning to bother them, and
2. The "shunnee" PERMITS, and for some like yourself, even ASSISTS and ACCOMODATES the shunners to perform the shunning.
If my father. mother, or any other relative complained to me that my anti-shunning actions made them "uncomfortable", they would "educated" very quickly as to how much I could care less, and I would also give them an "education" on who was the genuinely "rude" person.
I understand that standing up to a shunner may be something that some folks need to grow a backbone in order to accomplish, BUT your very wimpish response is the exact excuse most use to avoid doing so, and in turn being made a "victim" by the shunners over and over and over.
If you don't want to be a "victim", then DON'T BE A VICTIM. Again, shunning works ONLY if the shunnee PARTCIPATES.
