LONDON (Reuters) - A British man who went underground behind blast-proof doors and thick concrete to avoid a family Christmas has emerged early because he was "dying for a pint" of beer.
Colin Wood, a 30-year-old financial services worker, entered the decommissioned nuclear bunker in Essex, east of London, on Thursday and planned to stay for another week.

"It was great but I was dying for a pint and the idea of a spending another week was too much," he told Reuters Monday.

Wood paid $430 at an Internet auction for a two-week stay in the bunker.

He said he took such extreme action because he abhorred Christmas and all its trimmings.

"It's OK in theory but the running around, the buying of presents for people you don't like, the family bickering, the endless turkey and terrible films on TV are just too much," he said.

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Sweltering heat proved too much for a tiny Australian outback town after one third of the local population launched into a violent bar brawl which closed the region's only pub for two days, local media reported Friday. About 100 residents joined the bust-up in the western Queensland town of Boulia, around 950-miles northwest of Brisbane, Queensland's Courier Mail newspaper reported.
Police said the fight was fuelled by a simmering feud between two families, temperatures of 111 degrees Fahrenheit and alcohol.

The town's entire police force -- one male and one female officer -- were called in to cool tempers at the Australian Hotel as they waited for reinforcements to drive hundreds of kilometers from the nearest major town.

Police eventually used pepper spray to subdue and disarm several people carrying baseball bats, the paper reported.

"It was a thirsty day. Normally, in my experience we blame things on the full moon, I'm not sure if we can reverse that and blame it on a full sun," the newspaper quoted Sergeant Duane Frank as saying.

Sixteen people have been charged with offences following the brawl last Friday night.

The pub reopened in time for Christmas Day.
