I think he got a record deal or some other lucrative offer that is more of a sure than being on American Idol. I honestly, I think he will be richer and more successful if that is the case. All of the other American Idol winners ... you hear from them for a little while, and then what? Clay who??????? Ruben what?????

my father is just going into have a heart catherization (probably not spelled right) and some of the elders are at the hospital and are going down to view the procedure.
comfort or sneaky eyes?.

You are jaded and suspicious and you probably have a right to be! My experience has been that whenever a group of elders come together, nothing good can come from it!

How many should partake this year at the memorial?
by M.J. inhow many should partake this year at the memorial?
how many of the original anointed, whose number was "sealed" in 1935 would likely be alive today?.
i've examined the general survival rate of people of this age group in the us.

Boy! That is what I call some fuzzy math! How long did it take you to come with those calculations???
Two things always make me laugh when I think about the annointed:
(1) The idea that positions can be "backfilled".
(2) The annointed people I always knew were absolutely crazy! ( think it must be a prerequisite!)

If the Truth cannot stand up to a little scrutiny, then it wasn't that truthful to begin with, was it?

Do You Believe A Person Has The Right To Die?
by minimus inor do you think that a person should continue to be made to "live" even though they are in a vegetative state?
-
Wild_Thing
I think every person should have free will and should be able to have the right to die if they want to. The only exception is if they are mentally ill or unstable. The problem is that sometimes that can be hard to prove or determine and is sometimes a very subjective judgement.
I just know that if I ever become terminally ill, I will fight as long as I can, but I want to reserve the right say my goodbyes and exit this world in my own style. Hopefully, I will have people around me who will support my decision and be there with me.

Hardcore Cultist's
by GetBusyLiving inwhat sort of people come to mind when you think of the term "cult" or "cultist"?
i used to think of really cheezy b-side movies with zombie like creatures wearing all white and frothing at the mouth as they rock back and forth singing hymns to their overweight leader standing on a soap box somewhere out in the woods preparing kool aid.
now i think of the witnesses!

It was hard for me to think of Jehovah's Witnesses as cultists when I left. I just couldn't see it. At best, I would say, it was a high-control group. I always thought of a cult as a group that separated themselves from society to the point of having their own compound, dressing all alike in weird clothes, and having one single leader that they follow as their savior who is supposedly the voice of God.
Now, the longer that I am gone, the more I realize how much of a cult that the organization really is. They may not stick out like a sore thumb like many smaller cults, but they are a cult none the less. They do separate themselves from society and view everyone else as inherently evil and dangerous. And in a way, they even have their own compounds for the specially priveledged governing body and the other "fortunate" ones who get to go live there to be a
slaveservant for "Jehovah".They also make up their own rules and claim the direction comes from God. And while they may no longer have one single leader that they follow, their have evolved their cult leadership into a group of like-minded old men. They still serve the same purpose and they still claim to be the sole voice of God.
The most convincing reason that they are cult is because it is so damned hard to leave. No, they do not threaten to kidnap you or lock you up until you come to your senses, as is sensationalized as happening in some cults, but they have you so brainwashed that you believe it will be your utter destruction if you do. They use emotional blackmail to try to coerse you to stay, and then encourage your family to disown you if you do not. They do everything they can to silence their dissenters.
Some people disagree that JW's brainwash. I believe they do. They brainwash you no matter if you were brought up from infancy, or even if you joined as an adult. I just think it is more tragic and engrained if it is done from infancy. But even if you do not believe they brainwash, they have just about every other hallmark of a cult group.

The Gospel Truth.
by Blueblades inabout the only term that the society does not use is, "the gospel truth".. what they do use in connection with their current teaching:.
present truth, looking forward to new truths, their religion is the truth, infallible truth, revealed truths, rich truths, bible truths, great truths, precious truths, jewels of truths, unsealed truths, liberating truths, scriptural truths and established truths.. and that's "the gospel truth".would they lie?.

That's because they really don't use the word Gospel.
We didn't sing Gospel songs, we sand "Kingdom Melodies" TM.
I wonder what they have against the word Gospel? You'd think it had 4 letters, or something!

This makes no sense to me. I understand the guilt and pressure and blackmail ... I have lived through it all. But I cannot seem to rationalize in my mind why some choose to sacrifice their own personal integrity so that their famliy will talk to them! Talk about having a crisis of conscience!
My sister is doing the same thing, and has been for a couple of years now. She "went back" and has been living a double life ever since. I finally called her on it last year because she was trying to give me the same line of shit that she was giving my JW famlily. I wasn't going to rat her out or anything, but I was tired of her lying to me. She finally admitted to me that she only went back so she they would accept her back again. Now we don't ever mention it. I am not sure whether to be upset at her or at the organization(or my family) for putting her in that position to have to choose. I feel like she (and you) have to accept some responsibility because basically, you are agreeing to live a lie.
My sister decided that was best for her, as you must. I wish you the best in whatever you decide! Just make sure you can live with the consequences.
BTW ... I am sorry for your loss. Losing a loved is always difficult and creates an emotional charged atmosphere.

Whatever happened to the pioneer-assist program?
by Goldminer in.
i remember about 5 or 6 years ago, they introduced the pioneer-assist program at one of the service meetings.the purpose of of this program was for the spiritually-strong pioneers to go out in service with an r&f member on a weekly basis for about 6 months to help build up others in the congregation.part of this was because in the mid to late 90's a large number of people had become jw's and they wanted to make good publishers with them.. anyways,my wife was quickly signed up as was another young sister down the road.my wife was excited about it and was really hoping to benefit spiritually.within a few weeks though, her pioneer partner started making up excuses why she couldn't go out with my wife until eventually their arrangement just petered out.the young sister down the road was also quickly ditched;the pioneer saying she had to care for her elderly mother(she didn't stop pioneering though).before long the pioneer clique was back to normal and the spiritually-strong pioneers were again going out in service with other spiritually-strong pioneers.i don't recall any updates or the program itself ever mentioned again at the kingdom hall, like it was just a bad experiment or a major burden on the pioneers.. does anyone have any experiences with the pioneer-assist program?

Oh God! I was one of the "spirually weak" ones that was asked to participate when they first started this. The artificial friendship I had with this pioneer became even more artificial. And you can see, it did wonders for me!

Jehovah's Witness Oddities
by minimus ini now enjoy telling people about the things jehovah's witnesses can and cannot do.
for instance, witnesses can work in a store that sells lottery tickets and tobacco but they can't own the store themselves.....whole blood is forbidden to be transfused yet blood fractions are acceptable.
donating blood in any form is wrong but accepting blood fractions is a conscience matter.........can you think of other jw oddities????
-
Wild_Thing
[Insert here} is a conscience matter. But if you do it, you will be chastised, unofficially marked, or disfellowshipped. But ... it's a conscience matter! No pressure here!
