Feel like starting a New Ministry! True Bible Students
by SonoftheTrinity ini think studying the king james bible, and the jacobean flavored translations of the apocrypha and pseudipigrapha, whether you believe in them or not, is an essential part of being a culturally rooted english speaker.
i used to belong to an organization that advocated reading a chapter a day, but had no actual faith requirement to be a member.
20c a week and read the kjv a chapter a day, no lifestyle requirement, no doctrinal litmus test.

New Monthly Broadcast - BE LOYAL! - Shut Up and Sit Down!
by ttdtt inthe new broadcast is - predictably - about being loyal to the gb.it's a shut up and sit down message.. one of the funny things they keep bringing up is the correlation between the gb and moses.those who don't listen to the gb are like korah.. this is a false choice, why?let's look at a quick comparison.
(this is from the point of view of the bible).
was moses directly picked by god?- yeswas the gb directly picked by god?- well no, we actually are not told how the gb are picked and why the qualify.. did god talk to moses?- yesdoes god talk to the gb- no, they admit they are not in direct communication.. did god inspire moses to write laws and judge.- yesdoes god inspire the gb to write laws and judge.- no, they admit they are not inspired, and they are always wrong and need to change things all the time.. did god give the israelites undisputable proof that moses is his channel?- yes, many miracles visible to everyone one around happenddoes god give jws undisputable proof that the gb are his channel?- no, there is no proof, actually contrary.. was moses ever wrong?- nohas the gb ever been wrong?- every time.

I wish someone would make a reel of the highlights. I don't think I can stomach sitting through the whole thing.

Russellites ----> Bible Students ----> Jehovah's Witnesses
by Wild_Thing inin my experience, the jws always seemed to shy away from much association from the term "russellites".
most are wiling to accept that bible students took on the name jehovah's witnesses, but they seem to disavow much association with the term "russellites".. is this perception true?
does anyone know if there is anything in their literature after 1931 where they admit they are the same group as the russellites?

Interesting. Thanks for your help, guys! Blondie, I can always count on you for a historical perspective!
I thought they referred to themselves as Russellites when Russell first started the movement. I have read in old newspapers where they refer to them as Russelites. I just assumed that was what they called themselves. I didn't realize they were always called Bible Students.

Strange JW obituary, a Marshalltown acquaintance from years ago
by FatFreek 2005 ini'm pasting her obituary below following a google search for her children's names.
i was actually wondering whether she was still in the cult.
according to the obit, she was when she passed some 3 years ago but i suspect she was still a fringe jw as i remember her in the 50's.. janet keeler, as i knew her and her husband buck, attended the marshalltown, iowa congregation when she was in her late 20's.

My bad, neat blue dog! But I guess the same can be said for that, too. We will all be a "Was" someday! :)

Bible Students pre-1931 organizationally always stayed away from the term "Russellites" viewing it as prejorative. My grandparents were members of the WTS pre-1931 and said they always referred to themselves as Bible Students, not followers of a man like Lutherans.
So even though they didn't like that term used for themselves, did they admit that there was a connection? That at some point their group of people were one and the same?
If so, I'm wondering when it went from "we don't like to use that term for ourselves" to "Russellites who?"

I am aware that the Russellites splintered off into several smaller sects (which is why they might want to disavow them), but that also happened under the Bible Student name and the Jehovah's Witness name, too.

WAS a member, as in: at some point in her life.
"WAS" a member can be said of all active JWs and exJWs... after you are dead.

What will happen when they go full cult mode
by RobertT18 inand they start delivering their message of judgment?
what do you think will happen when they start knocking on doors and telling people that their families will be killed in armageddon because they did not believed in jehovah.
i'm curious how people will react.

I don't know if it is possible for the JWs to become MORE full cult mode than they already are. I suppose they can get more fanatical and crazy, but it's hard to imagine.

There is a new letter to elders about Child Abuse
by ttdtt inanyone see that there is a long letter on how to handle child abuse?.
-
Wild_Thing
In the case of any discussion with a child abuse victim who is still a minor, an elder should never meet alone with the minor but should al-ways involve another elder and another adult member of the congregation, preferably the minor’s parent(s). If it is not possible to include the parent (for example, if the parent is the accused), then another adult member of the congregation who is a confidant of the victim should be included.
Wow! This seems to directly contradict what I watched the Governing Body member testify to in Australia. He made it sound like they would NEVER allow a woman to be present during judicial proceedings. Even though women are not specifically mentioned, this paragraph seems to open the door to the possibility. I certainly hope so, at least.
