I wonder if they'll tell each tourist group half way through the tour that the contributions for meeting the expenses of hosting their tour, $75,000 per group, is falling short, and that Jehovah has loving seen to it that contribution boxes are conveniently placed throughout the complex.

JB:
I cant believe there would be a DC in Indonesia with over 40k in attendance in Jakarta, a Muslim country
I met a large group of high school students from Indonesia who were attending school all year long in the USA and Canada, at their government's expense. All were nominally Christian. Since I had the same idea you do about Indonesia being a Moslem country, I had to ask them about it. They replied that it is Moslem only in certain substantial geographical areas, and that significant portions of the population had converted to the Dutch Reformed Church while the land was a Dutch colony. In fact, they told me that was the thing to do in pre-WW II Indonesia if a person wanted to rise up on the socio-economic ladder. Some told me of business contacts with Europe that their families still had that had begun when their ancestors "went Western," including converting to the church. I couldn't help but ask if any of them knew about JWs. Some knew about the local Kingdom Hall, but that was about it.

Where is the Annual Meeting 2017?
by pomo6780 inhmm, it's taken the big gb a long while to approve the annual meeting to be uploaded to their beloved tv.jw.org site.
well.... from what i've read, it looks like they'll probably have to cut out a lot of embarrassing bits.
wonder how lett's "immorality ... i mean immortality" would look on an official society video?

Perhaps they are planning on cherry-picking individual bits, broadcasting them later, and billing them as things "special" as they love to do.

OK, everybody, as so often happens, the thread appears to be going a bit off topic. Of course, I realize that doing that can be fun.
Just to clarify, the WTS began printing the Emphatic Diaglott on its own presses in 1926, so I think our Indiana English professor Gutjahr is referring to that.
If anybody has any info on this going to the cigarette manufacturer and inventing bible paper, I still like to know.

A new book has just been published called The Oxford Handbook of the Bible in America. In it is an article by Michael Gilmour, professor of New Testament at (the Evangelical) Providence University College in Manitoba, Canada, on JWs and the NWT. That's chapter 41. But that is not the only time JWs are brought up.
In chapter 1 entitled "Protestant English-Language Bible Publishing and Translation," written by Paul Gutjahr, professor of English at Indiana University and the overall editor of the volume, is the following: "The third wave of Bible publishing also saw the appearance of three material changes…" He describes the first as flexible, soft leather bindings and the second as using red letters for the words of Jesus. Then he says:
"Finally, in the 1920s Bibles began to be printed on thinner, less costly, more transportable paper, an innovation that gained such popularity among Bible publishers that the paper came to be known as 'bible paper.' Such paper was actually the invention of the Jehovah's Witnesses whose publishing center in Brooklyn, New York, worked with cigarette manufacturers in the 1920s to create a paper that would be lightweight yet durable enough to hold printer's ink in a clean and legible manner." (p. 12)
Gutjahr gives no reference for his statement. I looked through that part of the Proclaimers book which discusses the WTS's history of publishing Bibles prior to the NWT (pp. 603-607) and could find no clue as to this. Does anyone know the story here?

Are Beards becoming more acceptable due to decline in membership?
by UnshackleTheChains ini noticed a young brother with a beard being given more privelages within our hall.
when he first grew his beard, he lost his privelages.
but more and more recently he has been helping out a lot more.. the cobe is old school and a stickler for rules, but with the hall becoming more empty these days, and the need for young brothers, he seems to have relaxed on this particular watchtower/man made rule.
