Is the name Jehovah`s Witnesses a misnomer ?
by smiddy3 ini ask this because from what i read on this board lately is that they jw`s seem to be very reluctant to engage in conversation with anybody nowadays and are only interested in placing literature at carts.. and if anyone brings up questions in their d2d work that challenge them ( like the arc ) they will promptly excuse themselves and move on.
also didn`t jesus say "this good news of the kingdom would be preached in all the inhabited earth " for a witness ?.
when was the last time you heard a jw speak about "the good news of the kingdom" ?

The thread seems to have gotten off track. The OP smiddy, I think, is not talking about whether to call them Jehovah's or Jesus's witnesses, but the fact that whatever you want to call them, they are not giving the witness they used to. Rather they stand around the carts and seem to be intent on witnessing to no one:

MS meeting highlights
by lastmanstanding inthere are a few things of interest, but the biggest thing to tell is with regard to the amount of times that pornography was discussed.
not just one talk... several.
the last brother had a computer on the table with him as he talked about porn.

Thanks for the post, but I don't understand this:
There was a video of GB Flowden.
Would you please explain?
Your words about elders, adultery, porno, booze, etc. call to mind that fairly recent post here of a bro. who had been a CO in Central America. He told experiences that were similar but even more widespread. One was how he tried to find a currently serving elder who had not been previously removed for adultery for an assembly part but he couldn't. Maybe US elders are becoming more like their Central American counterparts?
That statement of the bro. "service is draining, not just physically (as in secular work) but mentally, emotionally and spiritually" called to mind the recent post here with the pic of the four Witnesses at the cart, all busy playing with their smartphones.

Yep, looks real draining!
But your best statement is this one:
"so that you can please the governing body"
Nothing like idolatry! They really are embracing Roman Catholic theology with the GB being the Pope. Sickening...

What’s going on with JWs who are the studious/scholarly/research-inclined type?
I know that some of them have begun their own, underground forums. They do not generally bash the org but they do exchange ideas that sometimes disagree with the party line. They talk about Heb. and Greek and delve into real scholarly sources. For them it fulfills their intellectual needs that are not being met by the present brain-starved org. Some of these forums a person has to be invited to, vouched for, and so on. In other words, it's not unlike becoming an elder. However, there, in at least some cases, sisters can join in.
Are the trolls listening? Yikes! Something within the ranks that the GB cannot control!!! Better get those JCs rolling...

Hebrew language question?
by Crazyguy invowel points were not added to the hebrew language until from what i have read the 10th century ad.
so how can anyone properly translate this language and the older canaanite dialect properly?.
-
careful
In modern Israel people speak a modern version of Hebrew. Their modern writing system has no vowel points. The modern Jews understand and communicate just fine with no vowel points. If you grow up speaking a language, which writing system is used for it is quite flexible. It does not necessarily need a system with all the sounds indicated in its writing system.
Language is primarily a spoken phenomenon. There are people who know their language just fine but are illiterate. Since Hebrew has continued without break for centuries, it's always had a intelligible life, with or without the vowel sounds being written down.
Sure, there will be a few instances where words will be lost or confused, as Earnest demonstrates, but the Jews I know do just fine with both modern spoken, and ancient biblical, Hebrew.

Can someone tell me why Joan's ark and the flood not true and impossible?
by Gokumonkey inhey everyone.
i have a question and i hope i'm not confusing this with something else i heard.
while watching ex jw videos on youtube many of them talk about how noah's ark and the flood didn't happen and it's impossible.

Gokumonkey,
The main reasons for difficulty with the traditional interpretation of Gen. have been stated by others above: the biodiversity on the planet today, and geological issues.
How did so many species that are found in remote, specialized parts of the world get from the Middle East (Mt. Ararat) to Antarctica, Madagascar, Cuba, Australia, Tibet, and so on? Why is it that places like those islands just mentioned have so many unique species on them, so many, in fact, that they are known for the phenomenon?
If the ark came to rest on Mt. Ararat and it was a global flood, that is, if the waters covered the entire globe, then how could much higher mountains like the Alps, Andes, and Himalayas exist?
It's important to remember that the ancient people who are responsible for composing and preserving that part of Genesis did not conceptualize the world like modern people do. Ask yourself: did such Middle Easterners back thousands of years ago know about the civilizations in the Americas or in the far East like Japan? If not, then how did they understand the word "earth" in Hebrew? It was certainly not like people today do! The Hebrew and Greek words for "earth" also mean simply "land." If you read the Gen. account of the flood and simply fill in "land" everywhere you see "earth," you can get a better understanding of how an ancient reader was thinking, and also why so many scholars today understand the Genesis flood as a local phenomenon, not a global occurrence.
Does this help?

I wonder if they'll tell each tourist group half way through the tour that the contributions for meeting the expenses of hosting their tour, $75,000 per group, is falling short, and that Jehovah has loving seen to it that contribution boxes are conveniently placed throughout the complex.
"We know you'll do the right thing, brothers."
