OK, everybody, as so often happens, the thread appears to be going a bit off topic. Of course, I realize that doing that can be fun.
Just to clarify, the WTS began printing the Emphatic Diaglott on its own presses in 1926, so I think our Indiana English professor Gutjahr is referring to that.
If anybody has any info on this going to the cigarette manufacturer and inventing bible paper, I still like to know.

A new book has just been published called The Oxford Handbook of the Bible in America. In it is an article by Michael Gilmour, professor of New Testament at (the Evangelical) Providence University College in Manitoba, Canada, on JWs and the NWT. That's chapter 41. But that is not the only time JWs are brought up.
In chapter 1 entitled "Protestant English-Language Bible Publishing and Translation," written by Paul Gutjahr, professor of English at Indiana University and the overall editor of the volume, is the following: "The third wave of Bible publishing also saw the appearance of three material changes…" He describes the first as flexible, soft leather bindings and the second as using red letters for the words of Jesus. Then he says:
"Finally, in the 1920s Bibles began to be printed on thinner, less costly, more transportable paper, an innovation that gained such popularity among Bible publishers that the paper came to be known as 'bible paper.' Such paper was actually the invention of the Jehovah's Witnesses whose publishing center in Brooklyn, New York, worked with cigarette manufacturers in the 1920s to create a paper that would be lightweight yet durable enough to hold printer's ink in a clean and legible manner." (p. 12)
Gutjahr gives no reference for his statement. I looked through that part of the Proclaimers book which discusses the WTS's history of publishing Bibles prior to the NWT (pp. 603-607) and could find no clue as to this. Does anyone know the story here?

Are Beards becoming more acceptable due to decline in membership?
by UnshackleTheChains ini noticed a young brother with a beard being given more privelages within our hall.
when he first grew his beard, he lost his privelages.
but more and more recently he has been helping out a lot more.. the cobe is old school and a stickler for rules, but with the hall becoming more empty these days, and the need for young brothers, he seems to have relaxed on this particular watchtower/man made rule.

Jehovah uses the government to discipline his people
by StephaneLaliberte ini had a conversation with my dad concerning the legal cases the jws are loosing and how their policies are still lacking.
he answered that he has confidence that jehovah will give his people the wisdom and discernment necessary to make the changes.
i then explained that most of the improvements were made as a result of various court cases, including the australian commission.. my dad: well, than, jehovah uses the governments to discipline his people just like he did with the jews.

James Mixon,
Do not worry about your mistake. Your comments describing the GB as "people of low ability" who "from illusory superiority, mistakenly assessing their cognitive ability as greater than it is" and of the "inability of [a] low-ability person to recognize their own ineptitude" far outweighs any minor error on your part.
Those are nice observations.

Can you imagine being a Witness in San Diego and having to deal with this from householders as you go from door-to-door? That might well cause some people to wake up. What will the GB do if this becomes a public relations issue in San Diego?

Something has precipitated all this emphasis on accuracy. Something legal perhaps? This isn't coming out of the blue...

SBF,
Frankly they produce so little serious literature these days that it may be much less of an issue than it once was.
If so, then why is it being brought up now? Typically they do not bring up issues out of the blue, right? So something recent must have precipitated Splane's words...
