i decided to take the big gamble today and stopped to visit an elder relative of mine.
the gamble wasn't the visit, but what i did while there.
i am many years da'd, but still have a fairly good relationship with most of my family.
That's a great approach! Keeping it to one topic... and then giving him the time to digest it. I think most of us have been guilty of trying to give way too much information at one time.... puts them in overload mode.

i was just reading thelisteners post from an earlier thread, and it got me thinking just how little time dubs have to associate togther.. it seems to be more and more the fact, that the only time dubs see each other to "associate" - if you can even call it that - is at meetings and conventions.. even at conventions though, the dubs are told not to go outside for lunch, regardless of whether it is a nice day of not.
(note, this may not be true at all conventions).
where is a jehovah's witness supposed to get this period of refreshment so he can do more?
We used to have weekly (Sunday night) ice skating get-togethers...all the teenagers in the circuit were invited by word of mouth. There was a group of regulars you could count on to be there. That was in the 60s though.
My parents would have "get togethers" at our house...and usually everyone in the cong. was invited. People would drop by the house nearly every day to hang out with my mom. The coffee pot was always on.... My mom would also make weekend service an event. She always brought along thermoses of coffee and home made muffins, and we would always stop for a coffee break. Everyone wanted to be in our car group.
That was my social world growing up, but you know, after I grew up, I realized that wasn't the way it was for most jws. I've been out for over a decade...so I couldn't tell you about now....

anyone have an understandable meaning to spirituality that's not riddled with doublespeak.

Spirituality is the relationship you have with God, one on one...the connection your spirit has with God.
Religion on the other hand is involvement with and participation in a religious organization.

my wife tried to get me this morning.
she called on her way home from work (registered nurse) and told me she got real sick during the night and had to go to the emergency room.
when i ask what was wrong she said she was pregant.
My cousin got me really good this morning. I had just left the house and had traveled about a mile down the road into the next town My cell phone rang, I pulled over to answer...and he said it was (name of town) Police dept. He verified who I was and asked if my license plate number is..... Then proceeded to tell me that I had been observed driving 70 mile per hour on .....street. For me to stay where I was and there would be an officer on the scene directly. I was to stay on the line with a female officer until the cruiser arrived.....he supposedly handed the phone to a female officer...and click my phone died. It took me a minute, but I figured it out. Caller id had not listed the number....came up unknown name....and how would they have my cell phone number on file anyway?? I called her and she was killing herself laughing. After that, no one will be able to get me with an April Fools joke. today....but there's always next year.
I'm busy thinking how I will get her back!

reflecting on your own experiences are people on this website mainly open to new points of views, new ideas, or is this mainly a site for criticizing even when there?s no concrete evidence just for the sake of it.
reason why i?m asking this is because i?ve been a member here for just under a week here and already had unpleasant experience of being dragged into pretty nasty argument just because i dared to disagree with someone.
I think in part, that it's part of the process. Having been told for so long that "independent thinking" is a sin, we finally have a place that we can express what we really think. That's new to most of us, and we kind of flex those muscles....sometimes overdoing it. There's a lot of supressed anger especially when you first leave the borg. I think that the longer you're out, the more mellow you become.
We didn't learn tollerence (sp?...not enough coffee yet) in the borg. That takes time and maturity. Debating and argueing is fun...it's when it becomes personal that it crosses the line. Sorry if you have had a bad experience. There are a lot of great people here. Sometimes someone just hits a nerve.... Stick around...I think you'll see that the good far outweighs the bad...and by the way, Welcome!

I wish I could tell you what you want to hear, but I can't. They will put increasing pressure on him to either convert you or leave you. It will be a matter of loyalty to the organization, and he will have to choose. You are young, and love is irresistible at your age...but if you allow him to pull you into the organization, your life will never be your own. i was just watching the news and the un is in some pretty bad trouble, teenage prostitution scandal, oil for food scandal, ect.. it seems that they are slipping quickly into insignificance.

The history (or record) of any organization either establishes their credibility or disproves it. The Watchtower makes the claim to be the only channel of communication with God on earth. Any group can make such a claim...just saying it doesn't make it so. So, the evidence lies with the record....does it prove or disprove their claim? They have an enormous amount of written material by which to measure their credibility.
Say I applied for a job for an electrical design engineer. I present my resume and list my degrees... Let's say a Phd in engineering from MIT. Let's say I listed an impressive work history....say 15 years with Stone & Webster. Lets say I list many personal and professional references. Now, does my history matter? Of course it does! Especially when I tell you that it's bogus...and you wouldn't want me to design anything to do with electicity. My history is a record on which you can measure my qualifications. Checking the list of credentials will establish that I am not an electrical design engineer.
It is the same with the organization. They can't escape the written record. People check out the credentials of employees, Drs, Lawyers and others that have impact on their lives....but they don't check the credentials of an organization that controls their lives. When they do...as we did, they find out the record does not support their claim.
