The only thing I can think of that they could have on me is the statements I made, which I talked about in the first thread. Well, actually I do have a couple friends who are df'd, so they could probably get me on that, too. It's interesting though, to see the mentality. "He's not going to meetings, so he must have something to hide."

I may have sealed my fate - part three
by atypical ini just wanted to give a quick update to anyone who might have read my earlier posts on this subject.. tonight my wife, who is very active in the hall, has a talk in the back school.
i haven't been to a meeting in about three months, and i really don't want to be there, but i want to support my wife.
but of course, the people who supposedly have so much love are making it a difficult decision for me.

Enigma, I agree with you, and was just commenting on your take of James. I enjoy both of your insights into a way of thinking that is new and interesting to me.

Yeah, my pioneer partner bought a thrift store suit jacket ( a little trend I started in our town) and became convinced it was demonized. (I think he just lost his nerve to wear that bright plaid to the kingdom hall). I tried to get him to just give it to me to wear, but he insisted on burning it. I was there while he did it. With me watching, he kept yelling that it wouldn't burn. Then he said that it was changing colors while it was burning. Actually, it burned exactly the way you would expect a large piece of pure polyester to burn.

What are JW's leaders going to do when we hit the year 2014 and no Armaggdn
by booker-t inwe are fast approaching the year 2014 which will be 100 years since 1914. what are jw's and the wt going to do if armaggeddon has not occurred by then?
will they come up with a bunch of "new light" to do away with 1914 all together?
will they suddenly announce that jesus came into kingdom power in the year 2014?

I personally think they have already accounted for that. The growth among the traditional north american english speaking population has almost stopped, while the foreign language (well, foreign only to english speaking people) groups are doing very well. All they will have to do is put more energy into the new groups who have not been around for all the 1914 crap, and then slowly phase that particular number out of the publications. As each new CD-Rom comes out, they will erase a few more places that mention 1914, until they have completely managed to remove that little embarassment from their printing. At which point, all of the people who were around for the 1914 doctrine will be dead, and they can pretend it never happened.
I mean, how many current witnesses do you know that have any idea what is in the old Russell publications?

How do you connect?
by serendipity inas you read on these forums, what is it that causes you to 'connect' with a certain poster, sight unseen?
is it the comments s/he writes that mirrors your viewpoint?
is it a sense of humor?

I enjoy being able to read someone's thoughts without being distracted by appearances. I think that makes it easier for all of us to open up. When I first started lurking on this site, I found it very therapeutic to read someone's story without any qualifiers - seeing them only as a human. No status, no appearance, just a real person. I definitely connect with other people's life experiences.

Taking control over our lives.
by Lady Lee inthis is such a huge issue for me.
i don't want anyone to tell me what to do or how to live.
in part this is due to the control that the wts and the elders had over my life.

Lady Lee, thank you for this topic. I am in the middle of trying to fade away, and this is a huge issue for me. I have found that I will overreact to control, even at inappropriate times. Anytime I feel that I am being forced into something, I spiral into a mix of anger and panic.
I realize rationally that I am the only one who has control over my actions. This really is true pretty much all the time, unless somehow I get thrown into a concentration camp (well, it's something witnesses fear!). So I am trying to learn how to stop overreacting to what other people do, and start reacting to situations in the way that is best for me and mine.
Personally, I think witnesses are taught that other people are in control of their future, and if they do not please those people, Jehovah does not love them. It's really hard to shake off that thinking. On the flip side, I have developed a very bad attitude towards authority in general. I try to console myself with the old "Life is a Journey" thought and just keep trying.

I personally really appreciate James Thomas' approach. He doesn't seem self-centered to me, he seems the opposite. It's just that he's figured out that he has to remove his own sense of ego/identity in order to move on and figure out everything else. I may be over-simplifying, but that's how it seems to me.
