Is it possible to rightfully view people's lives as an "investment" in saving future lives?

If you kept up with the weekly bible reading, you'd finish the bible in three years. I had already read it cover to cover before I became a witness. I did three more times after.

so many bad things have happened in the name of religion.
however, if you could see to it that your group was different, positive, would you like to be involved in such an endeavor?

On what you said about the golden rule, again, you can do that without religion. Much of secular philosophy and counseling deals with getting along with others by being considerate of their thoughts and needs, by respecting them even in their differences. What does religion add to this, except guilt, rules of behavior and mythology-as-fact?

well i had a very interesting conversation on friday night.
sorry to be so long letting you know what happened.. only one elder turned up and i was wrong in my original thought that my mum had given him my report, it seems he was coming to ask me to study, therefore he was totally unprepared for what was about to happen to him.
but, i have to say, that he was the most honest elder i have spoke to and i'm sure you will be surprised by some of the things he said.. he started off wanting to know what made me stop going to the meetings and i related to him my experiences of a certain body of elders that had, to say the least, made me realise that they thought that they were a law unto themselves (including stealing, lying and generally being un-christian).
Ugh, I'm sick to my stomach. Now I remember why I don't read threads that give graphic descriptions of elder conversations. The denial, the double-speak... ick. Excuse me, y'all, I have to go take a bath after reading that.

To the extent that religions provide physical necessities for those in need, they are useful. These activities could be, and are, accomplished equally well, perhaps even better, by non-religious organizations. The religious element is superfluous and simply adds a layer of useless complexity to the altruistic act.

Case in point, Minimus: feeding the homeless. There are soup kitchens that provide hot meals to the homeless, along with information on how to find a place to stay, at least for the immediate present, and how to obtain help with needs such as clothing, medical care and jobs.
The secular organizations keep it to this. The religious ones add something else, unrelated to the activity of helping the homeless, and tailored to furthering the goals of the religion: in order to eat, you have to sit through a sermon.
