Ever get anonymous mail from JWs?

one of my boyfriend's friends gets mail every once in awhile, and it is anonymous... it's usually a watchtower or awake!

sent in a big envelope, and certain passages are highlighted.

for instance, when he stopped going out in field service, he got a watchtower with an article about the importance of dedicating one's life to the ministry highlighted, along with some of those articles where there is some person that is about 70 or 80 talking about how persecuted they were for the ministry but how happy they are that they got to share in spreading the good news about the kingdom or whatever.

He still gets stuff like this once in awhile, with specific articles or sentences highlighted. He doesn't know who they are from and they never have a return address on them. He assumes that they are just from a nosy member of the congregation... probably a regular member and not an elder or anything, because wouldn't elders just go up to him or come over to his house and lecture him themselves?

I am wondering... has anyone else had similar experiences?

And also... do you think there is any way for him to find out who is sending the articles? He told me that it is harassment and that he could tell the police and have them find out who is sending it... but I don't really think the police are going to go for that. I mean, it's not exactly the most serious thing in the world. Do you think that they would actually take time to investigate and find out who is sending some anonymous Watchtower literature to someone?

Why did Jehovah give the job of writing the BIBLE to the Catholics?

this is a thread which was inspired by our own hot little mary.. jehovahs witnesses claim that since pentecost of 33 c.e., there has been a faithful and discreet slave class that was appointed by jesus himself and that this slave class was "entrusted" with all of jesus belongings ( dispensing spiritual food to his followers and the rest of mankind).

oddly, when it came to gods own word to mankind being compiled ( the bible), ......jehovah chose the catholic church to dispense, audit, compile his message!

I don't know as much about this topic that I should... I assume that most of the people who have translated the Bible throughout the years were members of the Catholic Church (such as Erasmus, etc.) right? I mean, I know Erasmus came much later than the very, very early church.

A lot of fundamentalist Baptists that believe in using the KJV only think that all of the other translations have been "corrupted" by the Catholic Church. However, I am pretty sure that the Textus Receptus, which is where the KJV came from, was translated by Catholics.

Ever meet someone in the field service who knew their bible better than you

once a brother told me that he knocked at a door, and it was a catholic priest who lived there, and that brother thought that he knew his bible better than that priest, so he showed him a couple of verses to prove that the jw's had the truth, but that brother didn't expect the priest to know his bible that well, and the brother didn't win his biblical debate.... wouldn't it be fun if more people knew their bible really well, and could use the bible to make the jw's go away... .

gee, i hated that when i knocked at a door, and the person would go get their bible, and i saw that they had a decent knowledge of it... usually i left quite fast.

I wouldn't normally be particularly surprised if a priest didn't know the Bible very well... very few do. Catholics in general still don't place much emphasis on actually reading the Bible. That's obviously not meant to offend anyone, but does anyone know why this is, exactly? I live in a very Catholic area, and my friend's dad, who is Catholic, told me that some guy at his work started talking to him about the Bible (trying to witness to him... I think he was probably an evangelical Christian of some sort)... and my friend's Catholic dad told me that he said to him "Hey, don't talk to me about the Bible. I don't know anything about the Bible, I'm Catholic!" Isn't that kind of weird? He seemed very happy about this.

JWs and Materialism

i was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction of some articles that really stand out about jws and materialism.

you know, articles that talk about how bad it is to be materialistic, or better yet, articles that tell parents how much more important it is to provide for their children "spiritually" rather than materially.

(i mean, i know they say to do both, but i mean articles that really emphasize how much more important it is to spend time doing "family things" like the ministry, meeting attendance, family bible study, etc).

Beauty and the Geek

this morning on the news they had a fluff piece about how more and more hotties are dating geeks.

basically it all stemmed from a reality show where they teamed up hotties and geeks in contests.

they showed several examples, such as christina aguilera who is dating a geeky guy.. they interviewed two contestants from the reality show, a couple that resulted from being teamed up on the show.

My Husband

on the 12th of this month, around 9:30pm, i was getting ready to leave for work.

running around, putting on clothes, making sure i had everything ready and the kids were settled in bed.

my husband, shawn, was laying aross our bed, resting, he stood up and suddenlly put his hand to his chest.

Survey: Out of all the doors you went to, how many asked..............

could you estimate how many doors you went to within a year's time, what percentage claimed to be christians, and how many asked good thought-provoking questions?

questions that made you really think and wonder if something was not quite right with the wt.

how important do you think it would be in the lives of jws to have this happen on a more regular basis?

I think a lot of people probably don't ask meaningful questions because they are either trying to be polite, or they really know hardly anything about the organization. Remember, we know so much more about it than most people. Most people aren't aware of even a fraction of it. I didn't even know what the Watchtower magazine was until I met my boyfriend... I'm sure I had seen them around in doctor's offices or whatever, but I never noticed one or picked one up. I just knew that everyone said Jehovah's Witnesses were a cult, I knew they didn't celebrate anything, and I knew they didn't pledge allegiance to the flag. Oh, and I knew they went around door to door bothering everyone. I mean, researching JWs is not the top thing on most people's minds (even though I sure do enough of it!) So most probably have no way of even thinking to ask a meaningful question... their minds are on other things, they don't know much about JWs, and quite frankly, they probably just want to be left alone.

I was just looking for some articles on this topic for the project that I am doing and I couldn't find anything this specific on reexamine at the moment (it was also being weird when I was on it, though). But if anyone remembers any articles that really stand out about emphasizing "spiritual" raising of children rather than "materially" raising children, could you let me know what it is? I would be so grateful.

Call someone who shuns you and tell them you love them.

fight shunning with real heartfelt love.. i think it would be cool to let as many people as possible know that their behavior has not.

I think you're right about love being much stronger than hate. However, I don't think that this should be done in all cases. I don't think that someone should call up some wackjob family member that they have already tried so many times with, and the person goes all out psycho on them. I realize maybe most situations aren't like this, but some are pretty dangerous. My boyfriend and I tried being nice to his JW family awhile back and his "father" chased us angrily in his truck!

I think you're right... they like the "emo guys" who purposely try to wear those thick glasses and "geeky" clothes... and they sit around and get all angsty about how geeky they are. But the problem is, they're not really "geeks" because all that stuff is "in" right now! I agree, I don't think most girls really want to date boys in sweatshirts with a picture of a wolf on them that want to pretend to have sword fights with each other on their front lawns.
