  Awake #4/2016: Homosexuality

  the new awake is up on jw.orgwith the legalization of gay marriage in many countries, they decided it was time to show: "what does thebible say about homosexuality?

  Hang on a minute... the WBTS is a homophobic organisation. You simply cannot argue to the contrary. The WBTS' homophobia is expressed through their negative treatment of gay people and just because they treat others badly does not excuse their actions.

  The WBTS play the usual trick of attempting to absolve themselves of the label 'homophobic' (to the public at least - example) by attempting to separate 'homosexuals' from 'homosexual conduct' and suggesting people can choose their sexual orientation.

  Nobody in their right mind could argue that the stance presented by the WBTS is designed to welcome homosexuals into their organisation - in fact, it is designed to give the appearance of toleration whilst actively discouraging the gay community.

  As most here are exJW, fading or doubters I am sure we are all capable of considering the following scenarios which would test the limits of the so called tolerance of homosexuals.

  • 1. An openly gay (but not sexually active) brother asks to be considered to be a ministerial servant or join the service school.
  • 2. Could two openly gay brothers sit next to each other at the meetings?
  • 3. Could an openly gay brother go door to door or conduct a bible study?
  • 4. Would the WTBS encourage a gay brother or sister to be open and honest about their sexual orientation in the congregation... or alternatively would they encourage them to keep it quiet.
  • (4. Interestingly, if a gay brother went on the field service would they place them with a man or women!?)
  • 5. A CO or elder confesses to being gay (even if they are not in a sexual relationship) would he be allowed to continue in the post?

  Basically it is not just homosexual activity that is looked down upon by the WTBS, it is in fact people that are gay. Personally I think it is clear the WTBS is homophobic.

  @Cofty, your post is a clearly attempting to slip a fallacy of the alternative disjunct through the backdoor and IMHO I expected better from you. Basically you are attempting to suggest the label homophobic should only be applied to those that throw homosexuals from buildings.

  A better video would be the little girl coming home and saying she might be gay... I would like to see the reaction to that.

  I wonder if any JW parent showing this video to their child has ever considered their child might already know (or suspect) they are gay? What kind of psychological damage that could cause is beyond contemplating.

  Just spent some time looking at the vids on the YouTube channel. Can I ask what points raised in the videos presented do you disagree with (if any)? Have you found any factually inaccurate points raised in the vids? Any overstretching or guess work presented as fact?

  I know it is a bit of a leading question to ask, but I am genuinely interested if you accept the information as whole is accurate or if you find some of the claims unsound? Perhaps if you have time, could you tell me one thing you disagree with in the videos?

  Evolution: The Deal Breaker

  first off i do believe there are some evidences of evolution or i should probably say adaptation.

  i do believe this exists in various forms.. however the deal breaker for me with evolution is the chick or egg problem.

  there are tons of theories that get passed around as proof of evolution however these are usually examples much further down the evolutionary chain.. what i mean is let's start at the beginning!

  I'd really like to get back to the original topic at hand here.
  Theories around RNA and other concepts as the catalyst. That's really what I'm interested in.
  I posted the topic honestly and yet here we are...
  Given there are serious unknowns its all on the table.
  But again I'm particularly interested in the concepts which caused simple amino acids to be charged resulting in proteins which begin chaining and building life.

  I spent the best part of an evening discovering, reading and sorting suitable research papers, eventually ending up with two that give a good view on the topic... were you even interested in finding the answers to your questions in the first place?

  I think it is time to move on from the point scoring banter on this thread and get back to your original OP. I think you and I both know I am not about to post anything on this forum that comes anywhere close to proving how life got started. There are interesting hypotheses centred around the RNA world (which you have discounted, but I'll come back to that) and I would like to consider the following two papers.

  Back in 2009 nature published a 'Synthesis of activated pyrimidine ribonucleotides in prebiotically plausible conditions'. This describes the potential for pyrimidine ribonucleotides to form sequences whilst bypassing difficult free ribose and the nucleobases.

  I am not an expert in chemistry, however this shows a summary of the chemistry from the paper. This is the paper or here. Maybe you have an OpenAthens account to access this or Nature account? The second link seems open.

  Obviously this paper led to lots of new research into the area... and if you jump to 2011 you can read through this paper (which thankfully is open). Here given the blood sweat and tears of previous research the paper can build from the proposed mechanics to discussing what would constitute life and where the boundary should be drawn.

  Without wanting to appeal to authority too much, it seems to me that the grounding of these papers is well researched especially when they have considered the plausibility of the starting conditions and pathways that would not require unrealistic jumps in complexity.

  Your OP demands potential for amino acids to DNA. Clearly we are not there in the above papers, but would agree that the papers cannot just be discarded as junk science?

  Also your OP states "RNA as a precursor is not plausible due to complexity so how did the proteins needed for life get created." I would like for you to explain this statement to me a little more. Are you suggesting the RNA is more complex than DNA? If you discard RNA as 'plausible' due to complexity, why would you then go on to ask for methods that jump straight to DNA? I really do not understand your statement, please elaborate and perhaps I could get my head around what you mean.

  What on earth are you talking about? I mean are these serious questions you are asking? I am struggling to understand your motivation behind asking them. Do you genuinely believe these questions you ask cannot be answered?

  I suppose there is a small chance you genuinely want to learn about the science and theory backing evolution. If you do I am sure Cofty (or others, or myself) would take the time to answer your questions. Perhaps just pick one point and if you are willing to discuss it the evolutionary explanation could be provided.

  every time a jw shares an 'experience' with me (in person or on jw.borg) it always strikes me that basically what they are describing are (alleged) miracles.

  in my mind, i seem to remember i was taught that miracles do not occur in today's world and ended with jesus?

  have i missed something here?.
