I wonder if there is still a hole in the age breakdown of the elders. There were very few elders of the age where they may have teenage children, obvisouly as kids from 14 yo to 20 yo would be rebelling and hence their fathers would be stripped of their elderhood; they would be back as elders once 'enough' time had elapsed and the kids had flown the coup.

Elders: Born-Ins vs Recruits
by breakfast of champions inthis is an unofficial survey.. was curious as to the number of currently serving elders who were born-in and/or raised as jw versus those who were "recruited"( i.e, not born in or raised as jw.).
for instance, right now in the hall i am assigned to:.
2 elders were born-in and/or raised as jws.. 5 were not (recruited as adults).

WhatOthersSayAboutJehovah’sWitnesses
“While other churches hire consultants to lure people into the pews or grapple with modern-day issues such as homosexuality and abortion, the Witnesses make no concessions to a changing world. They still systematically canvass the Earth.”—TheOrangeCountyRegister of Orange County, California, U.S.A.

How Do You Answer Someone Who Says JWs Are Not False Prophets?
by minimus init used to bother me that people would say that about my well meaning religion.
how do you prove that witnesses are indeed, false prophets?.

The question "How Do You Answer Someone Who Says JWs Are Not False Prophets?" would suggest I have got myself into very unfortunate situation. It presumes I have failed in two major ways:
- I failed to avoid an encounter with a JW which is difficult to imagine and...
- I have engaged in conversation with the offending JW to a point where this question can be asked, which again is a major failure.
I am now imagining the following scenario.
I am trapped in a lift with a plain clothed JW, I did not notice the JW.ORG pin on his casual shirt as I entered the lift otherwise I would have taken emergency action: running out screaming 'Arghh... it’s a Jehovah' arms flailing potentially running in loose circles for effect (it is always good to run into and overturn a coffee table if possible).
Presumably the lift got stuck at some point and my repeated efforts at hitting the alarm button thus far have failed and my calls for prompt service are falling on deaf ears over the intercom... 'Arghhh... help help I'm stuck in the lift with a Jehovah... be quick he has a Watchtower and I think he's going to use it.... pleeeeeease help'.
I have recently been injured in a traffic accident and have lost the ability to use my legs effectively; I have made several valiant efforts to escape through the emergency hatch on top of my new prison cell to no avail. I lay on the floor exhausted from my efforts and my voice almost gone from my screams for help.
Placing my fingers in my ears is too painful, I lost my finger nails whilst attempting to scratch through the steel doors once I realised it was my last best hope for escape. Voice too hoarse to drown him out I am now vulnerable to the JW.
The JW has been talking for a good ten minutes now... and damn it! my iPod has just run out of charge... just as the earbuds fall silent I can hear him say 'blah blah blah... we're not false prophets you know'. Clearly I need to respond.
As the JW explains 607 to 1914 to me I spend the the time chewing through my left shoulder, it is painful but when you need a weapon needs must. Once my arm is free I beat the JW senseless with the bloody end.
When the doors finally open and the fire crew are presented with the scene, standing holding my arm with my good hand, I would just say... "Thank god, look at what the Jehovah did to me... oh and I’m AB Neg I might need a blood transfusion."
Hope that helps.
MOD: Please note I am not condoning violence in anyway, only in extreme situations in self-defence.

A Non J-Dub paying a visit to KingDumb Hall!
by J-DUBBED ini was thinking of doing a pop-in visit when they're doing their thing(what ever that might be).
to just see what it is that lures and hooks people, like our son.
i was worried there is some sort of subliminal messages in audio or video that start to brain-wash a person.

Reflection about Matthew 18:1-4
by Mr Fool inin matthew 18:1-4: who is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?.
1. is it an open-minded little child who is still free from opinions and beliefs?.
2. or a little child with the same opinions, denials and convictions as any hard core jw?.

The PURE Language - Finaly
by Ish Elon inwho knows how many scribal errors the book we call 'the bible' contains?
the book of the law as written by the hand of moses has been found once more.
king josiah was the last king to see it and jeremiah the last prophet.

Would this be anything to do with what Ish is talking about? https://archive.org/stream/agazetteeroldan00flemgoog/agazetteeroldan00flemgoog_djvu.txt
I am pretty sure we have better explanations of who wrote the bible... rather than "Moses"... try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Authorship_of_the_Bible#Genesis.2C_Exodus.2C_Leviticus_and_Numbers

In one way you have my vote - please direct all 'Jehovah Pilots' towards the emergency exits.
In another, I have no idea what you are talking about.

A fascinating invention is being tested here in our little village.
by Gregor init is a beautifully simple machine that produces electricity from moving water.. we live on the columbia river 3 miles above the huge bonneville dam hydro-electric installation.. we have an abandoned lock that was built about one hundred years ago to lift river traffic around the rapids formed thousands of years ago when the naturally formed bridge of the gods collapsed.
the river now flows through it next to thunder island.. recently, an experimental device called the "eco-auger" was lowered into the locks current to begin tests of the beta model.
it is about the size of a small school bus.

"You can't believe anything science says, they're always changing their minds.."
by disposable hero of hypocrisy ini know this is going to come up in a conversation shortly, how would you respond to this?
i've had it said to me before, specifically about health, one week wine/eggs/milk/axle grease is good for you, next week it's not..

Anyone calling themselves a scientist can publish an article or book or whatever stating their findings/beliefs
It is true anyone "calling themselves a scientist" could "publish and article or book" just in the same way I could produce 'Dr Mash's guide to open heart surgery' and pay to have it published in all good book stores... however this is not what is meant by 'publishing' in the scientific sense.
To have your scientific papers published means that you have submitted your work to an established respected journal for consideration, it is then peer reviewed and if accepted will be published. This does not then mean your paper is accepted fully by the scientific community, really it means lots more of your peers will read the paper and potentially test your hypothesis further. Here is some information on peer review from Science.. http://www.sciencemag.org/site/feature/contribinfo/RAinstr13.pdf
Usually papers are written by Doctors in their field although technically anyone could submit a paper for review.
This knowledge is what motivates some creationists to (a) get a doctorate from a diploma mill university and (b) create pseudo scientific journals in which to publish their 'science'.
For an example see here http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Answers_Research_Journal

A big bang from a previous universe compacted into one big mass makes more sense than out of nothing....
by EndofMysteries ini've been learning a lot more about the universe, galaxies, planet formations, etc.
it's amazing how stars are constantly recycled, they form from gathering all the dust/gas/mass around them, the heat and pressure as the mass gets larger, producing stronger gravity, and depending on it's makeup creates fusion, turning into a star, then when it dies, it turns into a supernova, explodes, and sends it's matter out there for other stars to form, etc.
now galaxies do the same thing, and supposedly in many billons of years many galaxies will have eaten others, and if blackholes or something pulling in all the stars and mass is at the centers of these galaxies, then eventually everything would turn into one huge mass.

As related to abiogenesis;
http://www.seas.harvard.edu/news/2011/02/clay-armored-bubbles-may-have-formed-first-protocells
Interesting idea! Not sure how one would go about taking it further? Guess at the likely fossilised biogenics and look for them?
