Tis a pity he is not back in, cuz he's exactly the kind of individual the Society needs to bring more balance and positive change. He should be hired as a consultant to set up a 'Reform Committee', lol.

Raymond Franz is back in WTS ?
by Ancientofdays ina friend of mine (still an active jw) is quite sure that r.franz is back into wts.
from his point of view, an evidence is that he never published the 2nd part of isocf, even if it was announced in the first isocf.
i'm quite sure this is a nonsense , but you may help me with some information.

New Testament support for the name Yahweh?
by WhatSexRU inexcuse me if this has been discussed before but im looking for evidence that any of the nt authors knew that the name yahweh (yahveh, jehovah, yhwh, or any variation) existed.
im testing a naive hypothesis that says that the nt authors were reading from the lxx and that they only saw kurios.
keep in mind im a complete novice and a (friendly) dangerous idiot.

"Were the authors of the NT aware of the name YHWH"
I would've thought it was axiomatic that they were at least 'aware' of the tetragrammaton given that it appears 7000 times in the Hebrew Scriptures!! -

Great post Proplog. Thank you for some great points you brought out.
The whole 'community responsibility' thing is a sick invention, a rationalisaton, by the Society to explain away their utter failure to fulfill Matt 24: 14. The statistics prove that JW's have not even reached one-half of the world's population with their message, in any way, shape, or form. Even in the one-third of the world that is 'rich' the message of JW's is hardly known. But the Watchtower leadership loves to 'ticke the ears' of the rank and file with the kind of raving speculative nonsense spouted by this speaker (its ok for the leaders to speculate, but the rank and file must never do it).
Even Charles Taze Russell could see what a loathsome, false, idea it is that God would destroy billions of ignorant persons. He argued scripturally that the ignorant masses will be judged DURING the millennial reign of Christ, not massacred before it. Russell would turn in his grave if he heard this speakers comments. How sadly far removed is the GB today from the founder of their 'Society'.
And just look at this blatant conflating of the 'faithful and discreet slave' with 'the Governing Body': "For those of us at Bethel, we have the privilege of working with the Faithful and Discreet Slave, the Governing Body. And I would like for you to know how the Governing Body, the Faithful Slave, feels about the way things are in this system of things, the time period in which you are living."
What a disgusting example of how the men running the organisaton deliberately reinforce the phoney concept that the GB IS THE FDS. It's a completely ridiculous idea that lacks any scriptural foundation WHATSOEVER. (Read chapter 5 of 'In Search of Christian Freedom' by Ray Franz to discover the truth about the Society's 'faithful and discreet slave' teaching.) -

The Fulfillment of Matthew 24:14 - What Does It Mean For You?
by Nosferatu inlol!
i can't wait for that wt magazine to come out.
yeah, i know, another thread on matt 24:14.. but it's not about the prophecy, it's about how it's going to affect us if this is going to be a worldwide blast of new light.

I find it almost impossible to believe that this is the official Watchtower position. The speaker was probably a maverick, indulging in personal speculation.
The whole organisation revolves entirely around maintaining a sense of 'urgency' and keeping JW's actively out there placing literature, in obedience to their 'commission' at Matt 24: 14
I'm not holding my breath on any 'new light' coming out in a future Watchtower on this. -

The 2014 Yeartext will be...
by yaddayadda in...habakkuk 2:3 - "for the vision is yet for the appointed time, and it keeps panting on to the end, and it will not tell a lie.
even if it should delay, keep in expectation of it; for it will without fail come true.
my die-hard jw mother just loves this scripture.

...Habakkuk 2:3 - "For the vision is yet for the appointed time, and it keeps panting on to the end, and it will not tell a lie. Even if it should delay, keep in expectation of it; for it will without fail come true. It will not be late."
My die-hard JW mother just loves this scripture. She admits that the 'end' should have come by now and that this might mean the 1914 teaching is flawed, but she rationalises her doubts away by viewing this scripture with some kind of prophetic significance in relation to the organization, believing that JW's are now in some kind of 'delay' period.
I've heard other JW's, including speakers on the platform, use this scripture to try and allay growing concerns about how long this system is dragging on.
My prediction is that there will be an increasing emphasis on this scripture by the WTS until eventually it will be announced as being literally fulfilled right now (if it hasn't already).
Can anyone tell me if the Society appear to be highlighting this notion in the last few years. I only have the Watchtower CD-rom up to 1999. Here's the best quotes I could find from 1999 Watchtowers:
*** w99 1/1 17 "Make Your Hearts Firm" ***
7 Abraham’s example reminds us that faith should not be just for a short term. Paul linked faith to endurance when he wrote: “You have need of endurance, in order that, after you have done the will of God, you may receive the fulfillment of the promise. . . . We are not the sort that shrink back to destruction, but the sort that have faith to the preserving alive of the soul.” (Hebrews 10:36-39) Many have waited a long time for the fulfillment of the promise. Some have waited a whole lifetime. Their strong faith has sustained them. And, like Abraham, they will receive the reward in Jehovah’s due time.—Habakkuk 2:3.
*** w99 10/1 5 "For Everything There Is an Appointed Time" ***
3 For example, mature Christians loyally wait for Jehovah’s appointed time for certain Bible prophecies to be fulfilled. They stay busy in his service, all the while keeping clearly in mind the principle of Lamentations 3:26: “Good it is that one should wait, even silently, for the salvation of Jehovah.” (Compare Habakkuk 3:16.) At the same time, they are convinced that Jehovah’s announced execution of judgment, “even if it should delay, . . . will without fail come true. It will not be late.”—Habakkuk 2:3.
*** w99 10/1 21 You Can Endure to the End ***
Moreover, the end may at times seem farther away than we expected, particularly if we entered the race decades ago. Yet, God’s Word assures us that the end will come. Jehovah says it will not be late. The end is in sight.—Habakkuk 2:3; 2 Peter 3:9, 10.
*** w99 12/15 21 Let Us Be the Sort That Have Faith ***
8 Habakkuk did not know how close the destruction of Jerusalem was. Similarly, the first-century Christians did not know when the Jewish system of things would end. Nor do we today know the “day and hour” when Jehovah’s judgment will come against this wicked system. (Matthew 24:36) Let us note, then, Jehovah’s twofold answer to Habakkuk. First, he assured the prophet that the end would come right on time. “It will not be late,” God said, even though from a human standpoint, it might appear to delay. (Habakkuk 2:3) Second, Jehovah reminded Habakkuk: “As for the righteous one, by his faithfulness he will keep living.” (Habakkuk 2:4) What beautiful, simple truths! What matters most is, not when the end comes, but whether we continue to live a life of faith. -

Do you sense the need to defeat or destroy the Watchtower lessening? I do.
by nicolaou indespite all the shunning crap - or perhaps because of it - i feel less inclined to take positive action against the watchtower these days.
perhaps it's just a temporary malaise or maybe it's that the organisation i looked up to for so long now seems small, petty and trivial and frankly i just don't want to waste my time and energy on it.. what do you think..

Could someone explain exactly how the '1995 generation' change amounted to a 'retraction' of the 1914 doctrine?
I'd say the 1995 change is better seen as a big nail in the coffin of their 1914 chronology rather than any kind of 'retraction' per se.
The 1995 change evidently caused many to wonder about the truthfulness of the 1914 teaching, but evidently those at the WTS, including the GB, nearly all still believe it hook, line, and sinker. -

Watchtower never took preaching work seriously!!
by proplog2 inthere has been a lot of discussion about the claim that the gb feel they have fullfilled their obligation to preach.. this would be no surprise.
jesus said if you want to really do what is right you need to sell your property and give to the poor.
and then... you could follow jesus.. after pentecost there was an arrangement where an individual could sell his property and give the proceeds to the apostles.

Very intersting Proplog.
Didn't the disciples say "we have left everything".
Re the Mormons, don't they actually financially support the young missionary 'elders' when doing their two-year stint? I recall one of them telling me that they had all their accommodation and meals provided for? So local mormon churches actually provide a kind of communal financial support the young missionaries that serve in their area. Easy with 10% tithing though.
However, can you provide more evidence for the communalism that you say existed in the early church after Pentecost? -

What is your Favorite coffee, mocha, latte, cap, etc?
by AK - Jeff ini am a rather old fogey on the matter - just black and hot.
but i like the occasional mocha.. what use of this universal bean is your favorite?
how many do you drink a week?

Just a double shot large flat white, and really flat, not too frothy and milky like latte's are (yech). I like a really strong, slightly burnt flavour.
I only have one in the morning. Coffee is very dehydrating to the body and wreaks havoc on the skin. -

The 144,000 ... is it correct to say that they are "saved" in JW doctrine
by kwintestal inreading 'the god delusion', dawkins says on page 258:.
hartung draws attention to the two verses in revelation where the number of those 'sealed' (which some sects such as the jehovah's witnesses, interpret to mean 'saved') is limited to 144,000.. i would not myself used the word 'saved', i'm not sure exactly sure what word i would have used because i don't think the jw's beliefs regarding the 144,000 can be summed up with one word.
kwin.

Well, no, I wouldn't expect a raving atheist like Dawkins to have much of a handle at all on Watchtower doctrine.
I believe the Society's line is that the 'sealing' is when they are anointed. They are only 'declared righteous' at that stage, not saved, having received a token in advance of their heavenly calling.
