  Why did vegetarian Abel tend a "flock" on a tropical earth?

  abel tended a "flock", which could have included sheep, goats, and/or small cattle according to the strongs word usage.. yet people weren't supposed to eat meat until god gave the go-ahead to noah, says the wts.. the earth was totally warm before the flood according to the wts, so tending sheep just for its wool would seem a little pointless.. it seems as if abel would have needed to live off of cain's crops, while he spent all his time hanging out with a pretty much useless flock.

  no wonder cain was a bit surly.. what do you think?

  Her mom is in the hospital now, preparing to die. They are making her comfortable. Merry says she feels like this time has been a blessing although so sad. I'm going to call her tomorrow to see how she is. I asked her to send me an address in case any one wants to send something to her.

  "Oh that I should have to go thru this..."

  when my mother was on her deathbed, she mumbled these words: "oh, that i should have to go thru this...".

  i was the one sitting there when she said that, half-way into a coma, and she sounded kind of surprised when she said that.

  she was fanatic in her belief in jw-doctrine (although she was inactive the last few years of her life), and she fully believed that armageddon was coming "any day now".

  it was probably so sad to have to see your mom so disillusioned.
  
  death has the opportunity to be an experience that can be dignified and honorable. it is so sad to see someone so "shocked" that they have to experience this very normal part of life - death.
  
  I worry about my aged grandma. I feel she is going to experience this same situation. It will break my heart if I have to witness her disillusionment also.

  I can relate to this. I remember doing the fade and yet going to witness gatherings watching people get drunk and go way overboard in the flirting department with people that weren't their mates and yet I was the EVIL APOSTATE that turned out to be shunned. Witnesses have the mentality that as long as they have "the label" of being an active witness they can push limits of the "no-no's" and it's okay. As soon as you want to shake the label of faithful witness you are EEEVVILLL!!

  What keeps you from killing yourself?

  every once in a while, the whole "futility of life" thing washes over me and something inside of me mentions the suicide option.

  not that it's ever seriously considered, but one of the low-level accounting-types in my head quietly sends around a "worst-case scenario" memo that everyone reads, then dismisses.. after all, things always perk up.

  "but," reminds the pessimistic little guy that should've been fired years ago, "they always go back down, too.

  let's see......
  
  - damn biology. something in us makes us want to continue life whether we want to or not.
  
  - irony. the whole big fat irony of that there is NO POINT! the irony is we seek a point and there is no point.
  
  - life is too much fun most of the time. I find extreme intense pleasure from very simple things. a song. a look from someone I love. a pleasant smell. sun coming through my windshield at just the right angle. a poetic blurb that moves me. the birds outside my kitchen window. reading shakespeare. having a great conversation with someone. although - I can swing just the opposite direction also and get in a funk that I can't seem to crawl out of.
  
  - I like funky derek's answer also. we'll be dead longer than we're alive so I may as well get my money's worth! lol!
  
  - in some sort of pathetic way I look forward to dying old in my bed with my family around me. I'm a sucker at times for those dramatic thoughts.

  so i've changed my avatar - again!

  i don't know what's wrong with me at the moment, i can't seem to settle on one picture for more than a week!

  anyway, the current pic' is one of me when i was 7 or 8.. thing is, it's just a facial crop from the one photo i am perhaps more embarrassed of than any other.
