WAS YOUR JW HOME DYSFUNCTIONAL?
by stillAwitness insome days are just worse than others: my mother screamed at me for like 10 minutes because i was running late for the bookstudy!
i don't even wanna go to these things!
and ever since that damn km that came out a couple months ago telling family heads the importance of having a regular family bible study my father won't even let a week pass by without us all gathered around the living room doing a question and ansewr out of the secret to family happiness book.

I can remember having to go through all that crap, it wasn't very long ago, 5 years, that I was in that very same situation. Except we had our family study, plus ALL the other meetings to study for, which left little time for homework or any other activities. Every week our Family Studies went like this:
Mondays-1-2 hrs Family Study in the Proclaimers book, Young People Ask, The School Brocures (So we would know what we believed in before school), ect.
Tuesdays- Study for Ministry School and Kingdom Ministry
Thursdays- Study for Bookstudy
Fridays- Presentation Practice
Sundays- Study for the Watchtower
Plus a morning daily text and Assembly or Convention Notes Review and any other extra study that they could throw in there. We all hated it so much. Like was already mentioned, it seemed that things got worse after an assembly part, or "special" talk. In fact, right before I was disfellowshipped, married and on our own, my Mom told me that if I missed a meeting she would call and hang up when I answered. That was her "code" to tell me that I was not at the meeting when I should have been. She had to use this code to to tell me because she couldn't talk to me. I'm lucky that only lasted a couple months.
Flower- If we didn't read right, (mispronounced easy words, read in a monotone, read in a funny voice) my step dad would make us read every paragraph till we read it right. And if we didn't answer in "our own words" We would have to answer every question till we did.
"Dad, the Bible says to quit Irritating your children!"
"But I'm irritating you with the TRUTH so its ok"
Hang in there stillAwitness things will get better, they have to. Hey how about asking unanswerable questions during your families study? Maybe you could lightly bring up topics that you find here. Maybe the 607 date, the UN, or any other topic that might catch your parent's curiosity. In the least it would be entertaining to watch them stumble around to try to find an answer. Or better yet, they might do their research and see for themselves the Truth of the Truth.
At any rate, just be thankful that Dysfunctional family to us means boring family studies or crazy parents and not the situation that Blondie pointed out.

I think I just got the total experience
by La Capra ini tried to go to walmart this morning.. this story's origin began last april, when, just days before my final exams, my gateway laptop went nuts.
as a third year law student, having taken her exams for the the entire duration on computer, the notion of changing my exam approach to bluebook was out of the question.. i was able to obtain, for the short term, another laptop and survived third year just fine.. however, it took three rounds of repairs to get my computer back in working order for more than three weeks (gateway kept replacing the hard drive, but it was the motherboard that was failing-good news was that they only charged me for one disk drive, and not for the mother board eventually installed.).
and i am not the kind of person that feels comfortable with the "what ifs" so when about a few days ago, my gateway laptop went to a screen that i only saw before each of the three prior "deaths," i decided that my peace of mind was worth many hundreds of dollars and decided to get a "backup" laptop, considering i have two more rounds of exams and the bar exam through which i need a reliable computer.. i tried to order the sub-500 dell, but it wouldn't arrive in time for december's exams, so i started looking at the other offers out and about.. that meant i actually had to go to a brick and mortar establishment so i would have a computer in hand, rather than in some shipping queue.. i am not much of a consumer.

Great
HorrordayHoliday Shopping Story. Although I didn't get to go out shopping this morning, I usually try to join all those people at 5 am. I don't usually look for anything in particular, I just try to browse around to see what I can find and do a little people watching. Its both pathetic and funny, but that scene that you described is very common here as well. I've seen a lot of pushing, shoving, yelling, tantrums, fist fights, people running over others with shopping carts and people grabbing stuff out of other's shopping cart when not looking. Maybe I'm pathetic, but I always get a kick out of watching people act like maniacs to save a couple dollars. It's especially funny when there is holiday music playing in the background. -

Do you charge your 18+ kids rent?
by tall penguin ini've been wondering what people think about this.
as soon as i turned 18 and had an income (it was disability but income just the same) my parents began to charge me room and board.
is this common practice?

My sisters and I had to pay rent, sort of. My parents have owned a Janitorial Company since I was 12. We had to work for our "rent", and once in a while they would pay us if we helped them with big jobs. For years we worked our butts off on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sunday Nights.

Did you ever go out in Field Service on Thanksgiving or Christmas morning
by pratt1 in.
i never had a problem with going door to door except for the holidays.. one, i felt like we were intruding on our neighbors who set aside time be with their loved ones.. two, it just made me feel more different and jealous that i was not celebrating the holidays with my family.. any thoughts?

One Year we had the CO Visiting During Christmas and we were expected to go out in service on Christmas day. He told us "Don't worry, your not interupting their pagan celebration, they are usualy done opening presents by 9 am. anyway." That really sucked.
However as far as I can remember, the years before and the years after that CO's
beatingvisit, about half of the congregation and neighboring cogregations would go sleding on Christmas and New Years. We would all travel about 70 miles North to private property with a huge hill and sled all morning and usually spent the afternoon soaking at the nearby hot springs. It was so much fun. -

Chewing Gum at KH
by stillajwexelder inthe elders frown upon chewing gum at the kingdom hall and we have had a locals needs part where it was mentioned.
is/was chewing gum at your hall a no-no?

They had a Local Needs at our Hall too a few years back. I remember that they used the example of a saleman and how would you respond to them if they were chewing gum like a cow. I don't remember what else was said because after that I was visualising a cow blowing bubbles.
