i know for a fact that our beloved hero sparlock has been given a different name in at least one other language version of the "become jehovah's friend" dvd.
caleb has also been given a different name in the same video.
obviously it makes a degree of sense to rename caleb according to names that are common in various different countries.
I am pretty sure they would change the name because for [whatever] language there would be other more wizardy-sounding names than "sparlock".
Like in Spanish, a dog goes "gua gua" instead of "woof woof" -there are just other sounds/names that invoke similar things for other language groups.
Likewise I am sure there are other words that invoke Satan-y wizard-y visions...
Nothing more than that. I am sure the soundtracks to the the WT video were already made before folks on JWN started flaming the name Sparlock.
is this statement on page 5 "though the surgeon performs the actual operation, is he more important?
it is hard to say.".
meant to be translated "is the guy more important to the gal?
Seriously--
It get worse (well, "stays terrible" would actually be accurate...):
Under the Mosaic Law, women enjoyed an honorable status, and their rights were respected. However, from the fourth century B.C.E. on, Judaism started to be influenced by Greek culture, which regarded women as inferior.—See the box “Discrimination AgainstWomen in AncientWritings.”
So any misogynistic ancient writings were all the more-recent, non-YHWH, Greek-influenced JEWS' fault! Right. What about all the shit in the old testament about women having to marry their rapist etc.
Are the people who receive these rags SO uncritical in their reading that these things wouldn't occur to them?

ok, never mind, it finally was able to download after several false starts... my laptop was likely trying to save me some grief because...
Oh my! Isn't THIS special:
As party to the Law covenant, women were invited to listen to the reading of the Law, which provided them with opportunities to learn. (Deuteronomy 31:12; Nehemiah 8:2, 8) They could also receive training for participation in certain aspects of public worship. For example, some women likely did “organized service” at the tabernacle, while others performed in a mixed choir of singers.—
"Invited to listen to the reading"??
They could "be singers" and "do service" at the tablernacle??
Could "be trained" for "certain aspects" of worship??
THIS IS FUCKING INSULTING. If I was a JW at the hall this would make me hang my head in shame.
Bull fucking shit. The WTBTS can kiss my fucking ass if they think that these spiritual scraps that they offer women are remotely worthy of acceptance.

Could someone paste in the whole paragraph- it is hard to know what
"Though the surgeon performs the actual operation, is he more important? It is hard to say."
means in reference to the larger paragraph/point they are making. I tried grabbing the pdf off the jw.org site but the down load is crashing on my laptop (slow connection here at home).
Are they likening a husband to a surgeon and a wife to the anesthesiologist? Seriously?
If it is "hard to say" who is more important, then it's just as feasible that the *wife* be the surgeon and the husband be the anesthetist. And if that is true, then why is this even a matter up for discussion? It is SUCH a non-issue. In the year 20-fucking-12 we are seriously *still* discussing who is *more* important in a marriage? Give me a fucking break.
people wearing socks with flip-flops.
it's one thing if you're just running out to the mailbox, or something.
but out in public?.
I remember about 30 yrs ago my mom had green velvet flip flops like those, talesin -what are they called? They are pretty. I imagine red velvet ones would be lovely.
The absolute worst is Tevas with white sweat socks. Ugh.
did you change the way you dress after leaving the wt?.
Pam -here in the US there are these sort of informal club of older ladies that all get together and actually wear purple with red hats, after that poem.
Gawd, all the time they devote to punative thinking and etching out what you can and cannot do could be better spent on encouraging forgiveness, charity and love.
They are just creepy and depressing. Glad I am out.
did you change the way you dress after leaving the wt?.
Yes, I dress a little more wild- I'm glad I can dress how I choose to and not have to feel guilty about wanting to wear things that are unacceptable according to JW standards.
I guess I would describe the things I wear as... ? Circus-y? I wear a lot of ballet-inspired stuff, tights and ballet-wraps, leotards, brightly colored footless tights with short-shorts over them. Stuff you'd see in a gymnastics studio.
They aren't "indecent" but nothing you could really wear around witnesses without getting a raised eyebrow. Just sort of "weird" things.
I am a scientist also and go to conferences where I give talks and then I wear suits. I really like wearing suits and businessy clothes like that too. It's funny -I'd never wear the stuff to a science conference that I wore to the KH -too hokey! I am much more business-like at the conferences with my grey wool Banana Republic suit... but I wouldn't be allowed to wear such a thing to a JW convention because it is PANTS. Bitch, please. What ridiculous rules.
a while ago* i set a goal to lose 10 pounds before summer.
today's the day.
i didn't make it.. .
I try not to eat any food with sugar added and I have totally cut down on any grains or dairy. This seems to be a pretty good diet. tough to stick to but very nutritious and great for athletes. I get a lot of good protein, tons of veggies and fruit, nuts n berries etc. If I have to use dairy (like in a morning smoothie) I use goat kefir or goat cheese. I use a lot of almond flour and mesquite flour to cook with. I don't eat a ton of meat but I try to buy any meat I do eat at the local farmers market where I actually am talking with the folks that have butchered the beef, raise the chickens etc. If I don't make it to the farmer's market that weekend, I just don't eat meat that week. I also use high quality omega-3 oil from anchovies in the morning (it is good stuff and has no fishy taste- I even put it in my smoothies).
For my exercise regime, I have found that I cannot abide going to the gym so I do things that are fun that build muscle -right now I am going to trapeze classes and I'm also starting up with an aerial silks class in a few days. These classes are SO fun and are an amazing workout. The upper body and core strength that you need is amazing. The teahers are phenomenal, and it is a really healthy environment.
For endurance activities and a cardiovascular workout I love trail running. It is so absolutely fun- running trails is like being on a rollercoaster. I do shorter tempo runs and speedwork around my neighborhood and the university but for longer runs, I do them all on trails. It is better for your joints and you avoid the repetitious motions found in poundin' the pavement because on a trail you are landing differently every time you take a step.
Its interesting reading about what different folks here do for exercise.
