the normally lively and noisy animals stood silently in line with their hands on each others shoulders for comfort.

they then watched, apparently in quiet contemplation, as the elderly chimp, aged in her 30s, was buried.

I do not agree. Different degrees of meaning exist. If something is "almost tangible," that means it is not quite. That is a different and more narrow expression than "not tangible," the only expression you are recognizing.

I am not just recognizing silence or no silence, but think that a more presice description would serve their intent better, as I mentioned above with "the low chirps and other sounds uncharacteristic of their normal chatter." The reality was that the chimps were being uncharacteristically quiet, not "almost tangibly silent," which, again sounds fucking stupid.

Swine Flu

well, i was wondering if anyone here has had swine flu?.

i got it last week.. my son, daughter and granddaughter have it now.. jada was sent to the emergency room at the childrens hospitol here yesterday.

her symptoms were bad and she is under two.. so they sent her there.. the entire emergency room staff, security etc were wearing masks.. apparently it is getting worse here, the amount of cases.. it was a brutal sickness, i can't imagine babies and elderly dealing with it well at all.. although, i got sick with the symptoms a week ago, i feel very weak and tired and have a terrible cough still.. i read on one site the symptoms being disorientation and confusion, which i experianced.. has anyone here had it, how did you survive it?.

Disorientation and confusion often accompany fever, which the flu involves. These symptoms are nothing new... the flu always sucks, swine or not.

The phrase is self illuminating. Ever heard the expression "silence speaks louder than words?" Similar idea.

I understand that the chimps being silent is supposed to be important, but their words are self-defeating when they say the chimps were in "almost tangible silence," which is fucking stupid. So were they silent or not? If they were not silent, then they should say so, specifically remarking about the low chirps and other sounds uncharacteristic of their normal chatter.

How does this sound: "The sun went down with almost tangible movement." What I am really saying is, "the sun went down very slowly, and almost seemed as if it was not moving at all."

You can get on me now about being a grammar nazi or whatever. And then after you insult me I can call you names. (Just to abbreviate the inevitable.)

John Doe: thanks for the dictionary cite... but the literal meaning of "tangible" does not help illuminate the phrase "almost tangible silence," which does not make any sense.

What is "almost real" silence?

"Bloodless" surgery is really just high-tech surgery incorporating blood components.

It's especially ironic that the JWs need to cite recent advances in medical technology in order to justify their draconian blood policy. First, it's strikingly hypocritical, since they do not value science and the systems of thought that produce such knowledge. Second, advances in technology and medicine should have nothing to do with justifying "Bible-based" doctrine, since God's Word is infallible and timeless, right?

Impromptu Survey - 2 Types of Reasons to Leave

i was thinking, not counting those who are df'd for "conduct," it seems to me that there are two type of exjws that leave.

by this i mean the ones that woke up and came to their senses while still inside.

1. those who found doctrinal errors and couldn't stay with the lies.. 2. those who found that there was no love and left because of the betrayal of emotions, and realization that by this fruit you knew they were not the ones, their lack of love.

Don't forget about policy as well, which is different than doctrine. FOr example, the WTS policy for two witnesses to child abuse. THere really is no legitimate doctrinal basis for the stance, instead its an administrative policy. ELders have to deal with administrative policies all the time... the FLock book is full of them and less full of actual droctrines.
