It was pretty weird when we got a Walmart in my hometown. It was like early '90s, and all the sudden you go there and you see all these people you never saw before. Like they just popped out of the woodwork. Mullets, torn t-shirts, 400+ pound heavyweights, wearing dirty sweats, sandals, like they've been living in a trailer their entire life, and only come out into the sunshine to retrieve foodstuffs. True troglodytes. Sometimes I wonder if they came with the building.

Simple Living and Lifestyle Choices
by daniel-p ini think a lot about how i spend my life and what i might be able to do to get more out of it.
the problem, however, is that change is hard.. i'm not content with how society wants us to spend our time and money: getting iphones, going out to eat constantly, going on weekend vacations, buying things on the internet, watching tv, etc.. i try to analyze what i do... but like i said, it's hard to change it.. my life consists of the following:.
waking up: i get up in the morning, my wife has already left for work/school, i get my morning cup of tea and eat a bowl of cereal.

Wizard, I like your thinking. To a large degree, this is the way we operate. I can't stand most new gadgetry, have never even considered getting an iPhone, and will be getting rid of my cell phone this month and replacing it with a pre-paid phone.
Since your work seems to consist of sitting at a computer most of the day, what would be the chances of you being able to work from home, either part of the week or full time? It might be worth running the idea past your employers.
If you were able to do this, you could get your work done nice and early and do some other stuff with the extra leisure time (from not travelling to/from work) and any downtime you have rather than wasting it being tied to a desk all day - if you do get this opportunity though, make sure that you set aside a strict space for WORK and don't allow it to encroach on HOME - or vice versa.
Sademo, you're spot-on with this. I have actually thought about this before, and even pitched it to my boss one time. I seemed a little reluctant at the time, but a lot of things have changed at the firm and I think he might go for this eventually. He just hinted to me the other day that we'll probably go down to a 4-day workweek, which would be awesome.

An idea...start an exercise routine. I used to hate to exercise and I was lucky I didn't need too for years and years. But age catches up. I exercise almost every weekday now. When I miss several days I can tell a difference in my mood and energy level.
I'm actually fairly active. Exercise most days of the week and go on hikes, etc. on the weekends. It makes an enormous difference in my mood, but the things I'm talking about are sort of more broad than that.

Breaking: Flames approaching Mt. Wilson in Cali.
by What-A-Coincidence ini haven't dug up a conspiracy for these fires yet.
but no worries, i'll dig something up..

"Mount Wilson Observatory Director Hal McAlister said Monday in an ongoing blog that the U.S. Forest Service informed him that passage of the fire across Mount Wilson was imminent."
He's got nothing to worry about then.
LOL!

Maybe you need a hobby dude.
While I don't view it as a hobby, I have been doing martial arts for over 30 years and even though the kids have curtailed my time for myself tremendously ( and I wouldn't have it any other way), its still there for me.
Its the one thing I do that is "uniquely me".
Physical activity does make a huge difference in my contentment.

I would love to run a K-12 farming academy where the kids could learn outside in a natural setting, and at the same time pick up on all the skills they'll need for making their way in the world.
I would make sure they're taught to think critically, with mathematics, history, and science taught from the beginning of their schooling to the ending.
That sounds pretty cool, Sylvia. Learning outside is, I think, the height of creative awareness.

an African land recalls that a female classmate boldly offered him sex in exchange for his help during a mathematics test. "I immediately rejected her offer," he says. "By maintaining integrity, I have kept my dignity and self-respect, which are far more valuable than gold and silver."
LOL, Yeah, that's EXACTLY what he was thinking! Doesn't he mean "...far more valuable than bootie?"

Now I picture danny-p as "The Dude"
I'm on my way, undercover, i'm on my way. Although I could never grow as good a 'stache as he has.
I like where we're at. It's not perfect. There are times I'm bored, there are times I'm stressed, but I look forward to hearth and home. I have lots of chores/projects that don't get done as timely as they should. That bugs me that I'm not more motivated at times. I let more pleasurable things get in the way when at home. That's why I know I could never work from home. I need the seperation from home and work. If I worked from home, I'd never get anything done. My home office is too close to the liquor cabinet for one...
I think I could work from home, as long as it wasn't something completely detached from daily life, like just sitting at the computer, telecommuting or whatnot. I mean like having some kind of home business where I could involve the whole family someday, working with my kids and teaching them along the way. I think that would be ideal.
