the blood rules). The blood rules most JW,s adhere to that,
but shunning 50/50. I believe many would be relieved, it goes
against our human makeup.
50-50? I think the JWs you knew were much nicer than the JWs I knew - of course, I left during the late 1970s Ray Franz era.
In my case, I would say only about 2 or 3 % would go against the shunning rules.

My point was - why don't they make this a highlighted part of the assembly program itself?

i was amazed how people who came that didnt even know whitney, but simply felt a need to be here and comfort the family.
One thing that strikes me as rather ironic is that the JWs now refuse to have food service at their assemblies - but think that having food service at this one-time "memorial" is not only fitting & proper, but probably a "miracle" because Wal-Mart donated sandwiches.
Which makes me ask - what is the difference?
Obviously, this was nothing but a PR show for the community. And yes, it has all the halmarks of organization from the top.

This indeed has been done offline/not during official assembly time (if not during lunch) forever, it seems.
And really - this is rather odd, is it not? Baptism really should be a more important special rite with them than the memorial - at least they expect everybody to get baptised, even if they never actually celebrate the memorial...

On The Beach was an interesting novel, but it was decidedly biased in an effort to be strongly anti-war.
The pervasiveness of the nuclear fallout and the length of time it persisted are not sustained in reality.

Even if they wrote it in the Watchtower (to give up shunning) the average Witness is so brainwashed and superstitious about this that they would still shun people as a practical matter.
Just like the "no blood" rules were changed for "fractions" - but probably a majority of witnesses would still refuse fractions out of past superstition.

Probably, but the district attorney would have to be on serious drugs if he dos not go for the death penalty in this case.
