I honestly think the days of the wordwide report are numbered, period - never mind the memorial figures.
They're now down to 1.9% world growth and the Society is starting to get into an intriguing game of limbo. How low can they go before they pull the plug?
I think that the only thing keeping them publishing these awful numbers are a sense of tradition, and the simple fact that nobody has come up with a convincing reason to give for putting an end to publishing them.

This is my analysis: If this trend continues, one of two things is likely:
1) They will change the interpretation of the Revelation verses and say that the 144,000 is NOT a literal number. Then, everybody could partake and the problem would be solved.
2) They will stop reporting the number of partakers worldwide. Then, everybody could partake and the problem (while still remaining) would no longer be documented in their own literature.
I do not see any sign that this trend will NOT continue. It is INCREASING, not trailing off.
Let's face it: Publishers grew in the U.S. - what, a measly 0.9%?
While the number of partakers grew - what, probably SEVEN per cent?

While the thread title almost makes it seem that all this stuff was commonplace at Bethel - that was (in my opinion) not the case. Well, in retrospect, the drunkenness may have been commonplace simply from the skull crushing boredom.
However, it should be remembered that every single one of the things mentioned DID happen at Bethel - and we do have documented cases.
It occurs to me (and has occurred to many others) that a truly Christian organization should have been able to manage to get their literature printed without creating a virtual prison camp.

my wife, my m-i-l and i were driving over to my wife's aunt's home on christmas day to celebrate christmas - which involved letting the aunt's great-great-grandkids open their presents, and eating an early supper (or late lunch).. we were on the way at around 10:30am to 11:00am to the house.
about a couple of miles away, whilst driving through the neighborhood, i spotted a couple of middle-aged young women wearing skirts down to their ankles, and carrying large handbags (aka 'bookbags').
they were between houses, and walking slowly... pioneer stroll?....
Like I said before, they are not doing this with the honest intention of making converts.
They are doind this to prove themselves to one another, and perversely because they KNOW that the people they are calling on hate it.

i've been doing quite a bit of research into books recently, and i've noticed that the book "proof of heaven" is selling very strongly at the moment.
it's currently no.1 in the new york times bestseller list for nonfiction paperbacks.. the book is by a qualified neurosurgeon who converted to religious faith after going into a coma and having what he later described as an experience of heaven, which he elaborates on in great detail in the book.
he argues that the experience must have been supernatural, because his cerebral cortex was "offline" for the duration of his vision.. .
