if y'all can stand one more dc thread, i thought i'd post some miscellaneous rumbling ramblings about this year's edition.. to protect my privacy, i'd prefer not to disclose the location - pm me if interested.. ***** attendance, as in all other years i can remember, was much lower on friday than the other days.

in fact, the attendance was 22% lower on friday than on sunday.

so, as usual, they hammered home the point about the importance of attending all 3 days....on friday!

This was a natural mistake to fall into, but the Lord overruled it for the blessing of His people. The thought that the Church would all be gathered to glory before October, 1914, certainly did have a very stimulating and sanctifying effect upon thousands, all of whom accordingly can praise the Lord - even for the mistake.

40 Years (a Generation) Past 1874, That's All it Was!

here's the real simple version of the complicated doctrine of when jesus supposedly returned and the last days arrived/ended/started.

william miller said that jesus' return would be in 1844.

The real 1st President of the Watch Tower - Not Russell

like a number of you, i have known for years that chuck russell was not the first president of the watch tower bible and tract society of pennsylvania ... which was first founded before any other watchtower corporation.. who have been the presidents and when:.

1. william henry conely (the con man) - feb 1881 to dec. 1884 is the first president (chuck russell was sec.-treasurer).

3. joey rutherford - jan 1917 to jan 1942.

My guess it was all about the money. Conley was probably a heavy contributor. By 1884, Conley was gone and apparently no longer believed in the invisible presence of Christ happening in 1874. (Barbour rejected that too, but Russell and Barbour broke fellowship over another issue.) So, with Conley gone the Society was officially chartered in 1884 with Russell as president.

i listened to this recording and wanted to provide a summary of what i have heard......in essence the end is here, keep on the watch, how can we tell the end is here, we tell you so, so keep on the watch....what about those who had incorrect expectations, well they were awake and watching, but mistook some of the signs, but the end is still soooo near.. .

the speakers pace is sooooo slow, even on the fast speed of playback, it seems to me to be slow.

he starts with an explanation on how they have a wealth of information available to them, and most of the questions they are answering come from the theocratic library, but one must be willing to do the research (i guess only amongst somewhat current publications, and of course only use the watchtowers information).. .

Mistakes don't make one a false prophet? Back when the WT Society was hyping 1975, it said the exact opposite. 
From the October 8, 1968 Awake!, pp. 22:


Still some persons may say: "How can 
you be sure? Maybe it is later than many 
people think. But maybe it is not as late 
as some persons claim. People have been 
mistaken about these prophecies before." 

The Difference 

True, there have been those in times 
past who predicted an "end to the world," 
even announcing a specific date. Some 
have gathered groups of people with them 
and fled to the hills or withdrawn into 
their houses waiting for the end. Yet, 
nothing happened. The "end" did not come. 
They were guilty of false prophesying. 
Why? What was missing? 

Missing was the full measure of evi- 
dence required in fulfillment of Bible 
prophecy. Missing from such people were 
God's truths and the evidence that he was 
guiding and using them. 

But what about today? Today we have 
the evidence required, all of it. And it is 
overwhelming! All the many, many parts 
of the great sign of the "last days" are 
here, together with verifying Bible chro- 
nology.

So, was this group that claims to be "the faithful slave" being discreet when it published all these predictions for 1914, 1918, 1920, 1925 and 1975? Or, when they pressured young JWs not to marry during the late 30s and 40s because Armageddon was so close?

I don't think the Watchtower Society can deal with the responsibility for their actions. That's why they pass it off on "some" Witnesses instead.

According to the last posts in this thread, Conley -- the first president of the Watch Tower ended up as part of the Christian and Missionary Alliance.

Here's an interesting tidbit on Conley. In 1884, Lutheran pre-millennial writer George Peters published his magnus opus entitled "The Theocratic Kingdom" in 3 volumes. Peters referred to and refuted N.H. Barbour and C.T. Russell in several places on the idea of an invisible presence in several places. What's interesting about Conley is that Peters dedicated the third volume of his set to Conley. Apparently, the first president of the Watch Tower gave up on the idea that Christ had returned invisibly in 1874 and had gone back to the traditional view that Christ's coming is a future event. For those interested, Peter's 3 volume work can be downloaded as one file. All the places that Peters critiques Barbour and Russell are noted in this file in the bookmarks section. 2009 Drama - Kudos to Bethel. Sorry.

my overall impression of this year's modern-day prodigal son drama was that it was one of the best i've ever seen.

"best" if the goal is to try to convince young jws to stay in the org.. the amount of cheesiness was at an all-time low, imo.

there were a few exceptions, but i got the impression that bethel is getting pretty good intel from the field and incorporating it into the program.

Tetragrammaton Tattoo

last week was finals week at the college.

as i was studying for one of my tests i noticed this one guy (early 20s, muscular, four day beard, average college student looking) getting on the elevator next to where i was sitting.

then i noticed he had a rather unusual tattoo.

I was just reminded of where the old Babylon the Great book (p. 460) refers to the Tetragrammaton on the foreheads of the anointed:

Since the Hebrew language is twice mentioned in the book (Revelation 9:11: 16:16) and since the apostle John was a Hebrew, it was doubtless the sacred Hebrew tetragrammaton () that he also saw written on the foreheads of the 144,000, for YHWH () is what Jehovah says his name is. That fact makes it certain that the 144,000 faithful Christians seen on Mount Zion are Jehovah's witnesses. — Isaiah 43:10.

Personally, I think it'd look cooler just below the shoulder than on the forehead.
