first time poster here but i've been lurking a while.. i have a question that i was hoping some of the watchtower historians might be able to answer.
if a witness was willing to read some of the organisation's older publications, what books would you get them to read and how do i get these books?.
my family are witnesses and my father is an elder.
Yknot,
Right. The 1918 edition referenced above has the famous censored section replaced. You can read what was censored (from a sermon by a minister of Christendom!) by government officials at the end. (It was an anti-war semon.)
There are a couple of other changes between the 1917 and 1918 editions. (Some of the 1918 stuff was softened as the End was not happening fast enough!)
You can read a text version (alas, not a scan version) of the 1917 edition here:
The edition of The Finished Mystery up at Strictly Genteel (and yes, its a pro-JW site) is from much later and all the false prophecies have been changed.
A pared down version of the stuff in the Finished Mystery can be found in the March 1, 1918 WT (also known as ZG):
http://www.archive.org/details/ZgMarch11918WatchTower
Some of the predicitons in the ZG edition are showing some editing also (as compared to the 1918 ed. above and the 1917 ed.)
Similarly with the book: The Revelation of Jesus Christ According to the Siniatic Text, published by the WT Society, later in 1918:

the only bound volume missing from my kingdom hall is 1969 awake!
(hmmmm whats up with that?)..
is there a scan of the entire may 22 issue available?.
You're welcome!
Awake! has some of the most incriminating statements revealing the excitement for the 1975 date. See this file:
http://www.archive.org/details/1975PredictionsInAwakeMagazineByJehovahsWitnesses
That's why they said the world would likely be gone before they graduated if someone went to college in 1969 for 4 to 8 years.

some older former bethelites may remember these folks from the cover of a 1984 watchtower:.
this was published during a time while the watchtower society was waging war against the "apostasy" that had started in 1980. one of the issues at stake was the year 1914. these older bethelites were photographed to give tangible proof that the "generation of 1914" would not pass away.
now, nearly 27 years later, they likely have all passed away (along with that generation).. there is a listing of some of the names of these bethelites up at a blog article at this link:.
Thanks, Bluesbrother!
One friend has contacted me and said she has a couple more names to add to the list of those on the cover. When I get these, I'll post them here too and then eventually will update the blog article to reflect the additional names and the brief biographical stuff posted from here. Again, thanks!
did anybody hear of this?
can this be confirmed?
do you know these guys?.
According to this site, these two are only approved by the GB to be on the US Branch Committee, not the Governing Body itself.
http://stuffofinteresttojws.blogspot.com/2010/12/good-news-from-hq-new-governing-body.html
The Governing Body for Jehovah's Witnesses has approved the addition of two additional members to the U.S. Branch Committee. These are: John Ekrann and Robert Raines.

I think I remember Raines. Is he African-American? Perhaps others can confirm.

I was wondering if I could ask a favor of some JWN posters?
At the moment, I don't have the WT Library CD available. I know some of these people on the 1984 Watchtower cover had their life stories told in various Watchtower in the past. I imagine most of these life stories are in the 60s. I'd be interested in what issues these stories appeared? If someone would want to add what year they were born (if mentioned in the article) that'd be great. Many thanks!

It depends. Some JWs are knowledgeable about it. One JW runs a website that has a lot of historical stuff:
http://www.strictlygenteel.co.uk/
Most JWs are familiar with this book: The Finished Mystery, published in 1917. You can read it here:
http://www.a2z.org/wtarchive/docs/The_Finished_Mystery.pdf
It's searchable. Do searches for 1918 in it to see what they were predicting for that year. Also search for "faithful and wise servant" and you'll see it taught that C.T. Russell was "that servant." (They believed that from about 1897 to 1927. The Finished Mystery has a bunch of other crazy stuff in it that most JWs are unaware of -- though it figures prominently in their historical consciousness.
i don't know if this has been posted yet or not.
looks like it's just been posted to you tube.
