  The sad thing is that for most of my life as a JW they would write very good articles in the magazines about issues related to family life. If people would apply the counsel their lives would have been enriched. And then with one paragraph or sentence they would put all the good information that witnesses should follow subservient to mandates to attend meetings and going out in service. Sadly too many would only remember that one sentence or paragraph.

  Many JWs have lost their sense of balance, their sense of what is truly important. These are the ones that are having problems and this group sadly includes many Elders and COs. Like you I could no longer stand it and resigned from being an Elder. 18 months later I stopped going in service.

  With that said, I still dont think that JWs are any worse then the public at large. The sad thing is they no longer meet the ideals that they used to hold so highly.

  we know that the wt portrays the jw's as a "happy" people.

  the wt would have the world believe that the wt organization as a whole is a "happy" organization.

  yet somehow they still believe that jw's are a "happy" people.

  I fully agree with you when you said.

  "Go and investigate any other group of people and you'll find the same instances as you do in the witnesses crowd.

  Don't obsess too much with just this one group."

  I have found some of the most balanced people in the world are JWs. I have also found some miserable individuals who have a college education and nice paying job.

  I think, that Smiles observations about frustrations do appear in the organization. But, not anymore then the general public. Many here on this board have experienced disruptions in family relations as a direct result of the religion. Others have had their belief system taken from them, again because of religion. People feel inadequate about all sorts of reasons it is not isolated to this one group. But, is it really any worse?

  I have had the same experience as you.

  I think most witnesses have a moral standard somewhat higher than the normal citizen does in their area. But, out of a congregation of 100+ people you will still have some who are even worse then the public at large.

  My viewpoint is that Witnesses change just like the public at large, but with some delay.

  For example 50 years ago if the woman was unmarried and got pregnant the guy would normally marry her and no one was the wiser. 25 years ago witnesses did the same thing. But, not anymore!

  When I was in grade school I only had 3 friends (all non-witnesses) who had divorced parents. Twenty years later is was almost 50%. Divorce and remarriage was never heard of for witnesses. But, not anymore! People used to stay together for the Kids. But, not anymore!

  Thirty years ago I felt I could trust almost any witness. But, in the last 15 years that has changed, just because they are a friend and a witness, does not mean that I can trust them to do work for me. In fact, I have heard more than one witness say that they will not do business with another witness.

  I now realize the type of person that will become a witness now, comes with a great deal of baggage. No matter what improvement any religion might have on that type of person the individual will still be more likely then others to have problems. So that is what we see in almost all congregations.

  I still see success stories in congregations in my area. Religion can help people. Parents can raise children with high morals. But, the problems people have today are far different then when I was a child. When an individual grows up in an environment where security and love are lacking, then problems exist. Conversion to any religion does not automatically change the person forever.

  So while I basically agree with metatrons observations, I think it reflects the general trend in society as a whole.

  The 'Truth' is a Lifestyle?? How?

  the word 'lifestyle' gets tossed around these days.

  yet, i still cringe when i. hear some describe being in the organization as a 'lifestyle'.. i suppose anything that eats up the precious currency of your life could be called.

  When I look back over my lifetime the lifestyle of being raised a JW in the US, was better then some I could have been born into. It gave me some lifelong friends and taught me a skill of public speaking I still use today.

  The sad fact is that the lifestyle that was around when I was growing up a JW is no longer really what is available today. As you stated their lifestyle has become "Peddling magazines and dragging themselves to vacuous meetings? Not much of a life - or a style - is it?" But, that was not always the lifestyle of JWs. Times have changed not only for JWs, but also for most everyone in the industrialized world. The sad fact is that most of what was part of being a JW in the 50s and 60s have been lost.

  1.- How slow is "slowly".

  It may take a lifetime. What are a few hours a month or years for loved ones?

  2.- What about if someone offer you 100 million to speed up the "slowly" process? What about SIX MONTH... (if that much time reminds you about anything).

  Since no one is going to offer me the money, it does not matter

  3.- "truth"!? , what truth?

  That is slang from the Borg. It is hard to change a lifetime of speech

  Not really that new, I just do not post often. Most of the time others express my thoughts, so I do not take up the extra space.

  If friends and family are important to you then you will find away to come to terms with them and what it takes to keep the relationship. Two thirds of the world belongs to some religion. And I doubt that any of them are really that strong with their faith. So I am just another nominal Christians that happens to be a JW.

  You should give a lot of people on the board a break! Family is one very important reason to slowly drift away or become a nominal JW. Does it really hurt to drag yourself to two or three meetings a month to keep peace with loved ones in the truth? No.

  Most of us are willing to do whatever it takes for our loved ones.

  What you say is true. However, are not most religious organizations today run as businesses?

  The Catholic Church in Boston is making decisions similar to what the WTBTS will do in the future. They made the same mistakes in the past that the WTBTS are currently making. The Catholics had their Inquisition and JWs have their Judicial Committees.

  Does anybody think that the Pope or the Governing Body really runs either religion? But, it is about money and power. And who knows who runs either organizaiton.

  in the january 1 issue of each year, they harp on about how many hours the jws did last year etc etc.. how many hours are possibly falsely reported?.
