wih the permission of simon, i would like to start a thread to act as a collection of thought, quotes and miscellany on atheism and agnosticism.
there are so many other threads on this subject but no one place which one can go to on here.
i have much to share - enjoy and contribute with me please.give me the storm and stress of thought and action rather than the dead calm of ignorance and faith.
COMF,
When I said 'by and large' I ment most people. Now, because I don't know you I cannot say for all certainty how you or anybody would react individually to extreem circumstances. I can't say how I would react placed in similar conditions.
However
I believe it reasonable to conclude, by observation, that people, when considered as a group, the majority of them, will most-likely seek a divine source of incouragement and help in time of crisis.
It's all a matter of perspective.
Stand inside the house and you only see the rooms.
Back up 50 feet and you can see the whole house.
Go up 1 mile and you can see the whole city.
Go up 10,000 miles and you can see the whole planet, and so on. Perspective.
My perspective is that the majority of humans living on earth will, at some point in their lives, turn to God when faced with a major crisis. Mabey even more so. Yes this is an opinnion, but one I believe has substancial credibility.

Larc and COMF,
I tried to use generalities and I don't think I had either of you two in mind when I posted that reply to the thread.
By the way, just because I don't know your every thought does not mean my reply had no merit.
Larc, I'm sorry to hear about your wife. Doing the best you can for her is all God would expect of us anyway.
COMF, I seemed to have hit a nerve with you by what I wrote. That was not my intention. My post was about challenging ideas as donkey pointed out.
However, as a member of the human race I am qualified to make observations not only about myself but about humanity in general.
When men are in trouble they absolutly DO turn to God, by in large. This is a fact to me.
Now, I'm not the oldest, or wisest, or best looking guy on the planet, but I've been around long enough to observe this.

Hello,
You know, I was just thinking,..now I might be wrong, but, I don't believe you can find any atheist on a raft in the middle of the ocean.
I think people like to be atheist, for the most part, not because evidence of creation does not exist, but, because it gives the person a sense of control over their own lives.
Puting "GOD" in a little bottle and looking at him on the shelf can make a person "feel" better about himself, his fears, his bleak destiny of returning to the ether from whence he came.
When we are strong and capable we say.................
"WHAT GOD!!!?" "I DON'T SEE NO STINKING GOD" "DO YOU SEE A GOD" "HA HA HA, NOT ME!!!" "AH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA........................."
But when we are weak and feable we wisper in a hushed tone................
"Please God, if you are there, don't forget me, please help me................
It has nothing to do with shame or pride, it simply is the human condition.

here is something to think about.. zev.
"pay attention to yourselves and to all the flock" .
unit 5 (a).
Willing to meet with the committee thus admitting accountability with the congregation?
Hmm.., Just as Freedom96 stated,... Interesting,
If the org is claiming jw's have "a measure" of accountibility to the congregation, and by extension - the society, then that should work the other way around.
Jw's support the local congregation, and the society as a whole ( world wide preaching work, quick builds, mortgage payments, co visits, etc,..) then the congregation should support elderly jw's, provide loans and "gifts" to it's people, have food programes, after school and child care programs, and any number of social works supporting the congregation members.
Mabey there is some bright lawyer out there aware of a similar case that's gone to court.

how many of you watched donahue wed. night?
his program revolved around separation of church and state.
there were discussions on the ten commandment issue in alabama, prayer at graduation exercises, the use of the word god in the pledge, etc.
I saw that portion of the Donahue Show with my JW mother-in-law sitting across from me.
I had my head laying back on the couch and when I heard Donahue mention jehovah's witnesses my head snapped foward in complete attention.
I know it sounded like he was praising jw's but he could also have been acknowledging the precedent they were setting, freedom from state sponsored religion.
I don't know what he thinks about jw's as a cult religion so I can't realy say if he was praising them directly.
My mother-in-law, God bless her, just mumbled a few words because she knows how I feel about THAT topic.

ok.....here's one for you.....maybe this follows on from previous posts about not forever being "ex-jws" as after all, you say you have to move on, and many here claim that they have.....however reading most posts here it becomes obvious that that doesn't seem to be the case.
many seem to be trapped in a "go get 'em" crusade against the jws that seems to go round and round ...... and others just go round.. why?
how long before resolution occurs?
JT said it right!
JWD provides a nexus of divergent views. Somthing the org can NEVER allow, less they loose their grip on jw's perception of reality.
