  I read the article and found it informative. Much of the material I've come accross in other sources (Hassan, Hoffer), but it is a good introductory piece. Sutphen, apart from advertising, is also a htpnotist and conducts motivational workshops. This further qualifies him as knowledgeable regarding persuasion techniques. The past life regression, palmistry, astrology and other new age stuff made me leary.

  I am currently reading an interesting book called Coercion: Why We Listen to What 'They' Say: . http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/157322829X/qid=1011826614/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_75_1/104-4078506-1746330. I am not far into the book, but it explores in further detail the techniques outlined by Sutphen.

  Sutphen does have an extensive background in advertising and this does lend him credibility regarding persuasion techniques. After all, what is advertising but an effort to manipulate you in some way? Good advertisers and marketers use many of the same techniques to get you to "buy" their product, whatever it may be from the tangible (products) to the intagible (ideologies).

  I haven't read the article yet, but this couple seems to be "out there" in their own way. Did you explore the site. They're into past life regression and other "new age" "metaphysical" stuff. This doesn't mean the article isn't good, just that the source is questionable on some accounts.

  Power, corruption, religion & politics

  i find it amusing but disconcerting to see the blinders on people's eyes when it comes to politics.

  here we are, most of us having been jws, but now we are fully aware of the corruption of the wts, yet we are blind to the same thing happening in politics.

  this is especially true of the more conservative members among us.

  So let me see if I've got this right.

  Multi-national corporations donate to political parties and candidates, wine, dine and give gifts to candidates and politicians, and buy ads in the very media they own in order to place "their people" in office, who in turn can pass laws and legislation "friendly" to their coporate backers financial interests. Quite a racket, ain't it?

  It's not just the people involved, but the whole system that's corrupt. In order to fix it you need those who benefit from the system to change the system so that they no longer benefit, i.e. campaign finance reform. Not a likely scenario without a lot of pressure from their constituents, who, up till now, have been almost dead silent about reforming the system.

  Same goes for the WT. Why would those at the top do something to end the freeride they get at the expense of the rank and file?

  Thanks for the clarification. From the perspective of the group dynamic, you are absolutely correct that from the group's perspective there is no honorable way to leave, clearly part of the cult "we versus them" mentality.

  I don't fit in any of the categories. I am not, have not been, nor ever will be a Witness. I do have the misfortune of being married to one.

  This may be nothing more than semantics, but I don't agree that there is no honorable way to leave. Leaving for reasons of conscience or simply disagreement regarding belief seems to be quite honorable to me, as well as it's healthy, empowering and very honorable to leave an abusive relationship.

  The dishonor lies with the WT and Witnesses, their abusive treatment of those who leave, and the manipulative threats and actions they use to ensure obedience and association. Where lies the honor in forcing others into preconceived notions of what is good or bad, right or wrong, good association or bad association, worthy or not of love and friendship irregardless of personal circumstances?
