Interesting thing happened the other day...
by the_leander inmy wife, quite out of the blue turned to me and said "i think that if we didn't have tomas (our son) then my parents wouldn't have gotten back in touch.
" she then immediately attempted to write off the feeling as being silly.
i concurred with her statement, and pointed out to her the numbers - prior to telling them, their contact could be measured on the fingers of one hand, and after, it was every week without fail, indeed, they couldn't do enough for her... .

I have my copy of this book and it's underlined in places, but I have no recollection of studying it. Maybe I totally dismissed it as a fairytale?

The Nature of Human Nature
by Carmel inso many testimonies from those of you that have left the clutches of the witnesses that have dramatically altered your lives, yet there seems to be those among you that feel human nature is an immutable entity locked into sideboards that will not (cannot) be altered.
history is replete with scroundrulous characters, and contemporary examples could easily be recounted to support the notion that the human condition is a product of thousands of years of genetic inheritance destined to continue unchanged into the distant future.
hence a pretty pessimistic outlook for humanity.. curious to know if that is the prevailing sentiment..... carmel

I don't believe human nature has changed over the years. I do believe as individuals we can overcome limitations, environmental or genetic influences and modify our nature.

(((Dune))),
I'm sorry you're having to go through this. Does peer pressure ever end? Take a stand for what you want, and ignore the naysayers. You'll be happier in the end.

As a young JW, I ignored the counsel and started college in 1981 while living at home. I was treated coolly by the cong, and not exactly encouraged, but not marked either. I knew I had to do what I thought was right for me. I didn't exactly have the support of my family, but my mother tolerated it.
In the interest of balance, not everyone is cut out to go to college. And not everyone is cut out to sit in a cubicle staring at a computer for large portions of a day. I've known several college grads change careers to get jobs that would get them outdoors. There's no shame working in the trades, and many of the trades have an aging population, so there are plenty of opportunities. The pay is usually pretty good and those with a business aptitude can start their own businesses. Young adults should be encouraged to pursue careers in their areas of interests and/or aptitudes. We spend too much time at work to be stuck in boring, dead-end positions that don't use our talents.

Birthday celebrations and customs - Are they for Christians?
by AlmostAtheist ini sent my birthday document (http://thebentinel.com/jw-birthdays.html) to a poster here that is at the very least a jw-sympathizer, if not a full-blown jw.
the response i got back indicated that my reasoning on it was seriously flawed and essentially any idiot with a passing knowledge of scripture and history can tell that birthdays are not something christians should celebrate.. of course, if you're not a bible-believer or a god-believer, you couldn't care less about pagan origins and all that.
but let's keep this conversation on the 'appropriate for christians' vein.

Another argument: There were no records of the early (first century) Christian's celebrating Jesus' birthday. If they didn't even celebrate Jesus' birthday, why would a Christian celebrate his own?
I also recall a WTS quote of a historian's comments on birthdays, but don't remember which publication I saw that in.
