I feel very sad for your situation, as I was once a close friend (in my mind anyway) of a JW who ended our friendship in a similarly abrupt way. I still wish that he was in my life, but as long as he has those beliefs, it will likely never happen, and if it did, it would likely not be a good friendship for me to have, as those beliefs would eventually cause him to hurt me again, even if unintentionally. Try to focus on your other friends and family. If need be, talk to a counsellor about your hurt and confusion. There are a lot of good relationship books out there that can help you to understand what you're going through. In my opinion, the JW use a form of mind control on their believers, so I would advise you to listen to most of the ex-JW people in this forum and stay away from the cult itself.

JW Convention in Edmonton, AB open to the public (weekend of July 1/06)
by Worldly ini thought some of you would be interested to know that the local convention is being opened up to the general public.
a friend of mine and i have both received notices at our door to this effect.
my friend used to be married to a jw and he said that this is not their normal way of doing things.

Would they try and get your name and address and such so that they could "visit" later?

Do antidepressants really work? or placibo?
by boy@crossroads ini've posted on freeminds for over a year now but i rarely post on the medical treatment forum.
i believe i've had depression or some other milder form of depression for many months but i haven't gotten antidepressants for a couple of reasons 1.pride- i feel that taken antidepressants is admittion that i'm weak, 2. fear- i don't have health insurance and i'm afraid of the financial reprocussions of prescriptions and mental healthcare visits.
3. i'm also afraid that by taking the medication it will have no affect (wasted money) or that i will be worse off after taking them than if i had done nothing.. give me some of your thoughts.

I think Little Toe got it right when he said that most people don't think twice about getting medical help for physical illness, but when mental health is involved there is a huge stigma attached. Some things that weren't mentioned above (unless I missed them)--exercise has been proven to help with depression--a simple walk or something more. And, depression is often eased by a combination of anti-depressants and talk therapy, with a qualified therapist. It all depends on how seriously depressed you are feeling - if you are weepy, or angry all the time, or having thoughts of suicide--seek professional medical help immediately!
If it doesn't seem that serious, you may wish to try some of the other suggestions first, but if your feelings continue for more than a few weeks, you should probably see a doctor.
Good luck--I'm sending positive thoughts to you!

Funny! So what happens when a member of the public goes to one of these conventions?

Interesting info--thanks for sharing. When my JW friend and I worked together, he would mention that they had conventions or special meetings, but he never invited me or anyone that I know of. My other friend, who is divorced from his JW wife, said that the conventions here had not been open to the public previously. Maybe they only do it "as needed."

My friend used to be married to a JW and he said that this is not their normal way of doing things. I suspect that what some of you have said on this forum is true--that their membership is declining, forcing them to open things up this way in hopes of recruiting new cult members. What do you think? Also, my husband and I were home relaxing on our deck when the JWs came to our door. They did not ask to speak with us, just said that they were going to put something regarding a convention in our mailbox. I wish they would have identified themselves so I could have had a frank discussion with them with regard to my ex-friend who now shuns me, and how the JW ex-wife of my other friend kept his daughter from him after they separated. SoSoSad
by Madame Quixote ini feel that nothing i say or do will ever make a difference for them or for others.
they are so locked into, so imprisoned in their marriage to the wbts.
they may never hear or see any real truth about the borg, no matter what i say and do, i know this every day; but some days it just hits me so hard.

I was given some advice that I thought was profound: Allow yourself to feel the sadness and work your way through it. Too often, we suppress our feelings. Feel them, examine them, and then let them go. Wishing you happy days ahead...

I was kinda down and out today....
by IronClaw inso i went for a ride and stopped by this scenic overlook not to far from my house.
i sat on the bench there just looking at the mohawk valley at its best.
i started thinking what a waste life is when you don't have anyone to share beautiful moments like this with.

I, myself, thought that JW's were very religious people who had some strange customs that I didn't understand, as there is almost no readily available information out there. People of my parent's generation used to slam the doors in the faces of the people who were knocking on doors. I never really knew why they were so against the JW's. After getting to know a JW friend (who was not very honest and forthcoming about what he really believes) I was taken in (although not interested in becoming one of them), until he started to withdraw from our friendship and I started to look into the "religion" more. Now, I have to say, I think it is a cult and I feel really sad for all of the lives that have been ruined.

Great artwork, Mike. Do you have relatives in Alberta, Canada by any chance?
