Well , how about this??
The Liu Institute for Global Issues which is part of the University of British Columbia have finalised a detailed report on the the prevalance of wars and all its aspects. The facts show that wars are rarer and fewer and we are safer now than we were 100 years ago.
You can find the main page for the report and then download it for free. www.humansecurityreport.info
I'm sorry I don't know how to 'link' it directly. For those who want a short 'highlight'....
Armed conflicts dropped by 40% since 1992. Deadliest dropped by 80%
International precursors to war fell by more than 70% between 1981-2001
Coups and attempted coups have declined by 60% since 1963
The period since WW 2 is the longest interval without wars between the major powers in hundreds of years
Wars are less deadly. The average number killed per conflict per year in 1950 was 38,000. In 2002 it was just 600- a decline of 98%
International terrorism is the only form of political violence that is getting worse.
The report is highly detailed and shows fascinating line graphs showing the steady fall in conflict.
I don't know what I could have said if someone had shown me this while I beating on about the composite sign.

Well the Witnesses are right about something
by slimboyfat init seems clear that witnesses have inflated and distorted figures on earthquakes since 1914 in order to bolster their belief in the end times.
their claim that diseases are on the increase also seems a bit incredible when you consider all the medical advances and extension in life-expectancy in the last century.
as for famines, well they are terrible when they still happen, but history shows that this is one problem humans are starting to get to grips with compared with previous centuries.

What are some common misconceptions about JW's among ex-JW's?
by AlmostAtheist inwe come out of the org.
we caught them in lies.
they stole our time, our money, our families from us.

Welcome lrkr and yes, I'm with you on this one. That Russel was a closet Mason. There are a lot of freaky things around this one. The pyramid headstone, Freemasonry symbols and his actual burial place! But I think that a lot of well intentioned religious people were interested in these 'societies' at that time in the late 19th century.
That he otherwise pursued Freemasonry outside of his crazy pyramid thang is a matter of conjecture and does not make the modern JW part of the aforementioned group. -

Vinyl recordings of Rutherford etc
by veen inso i remember my grandmother having these old vinyl recordings with the dude ranting away.
do you think it would be worth me trying to getting hold of them, or are they already available in the public domain.
i wish i was a hardcore anti jw when i was younger 'cos i would listen to those beauties now, at the time i thought they were just boring.

"Re: Vinyl recordings of Rutherford "??
Veen, none of the old Genesis recordings are particularly valuable. Even with Phil Collins. ;)
And welcome to JWD by the way.

Our sappho sisters
by ShirleyW inthere are two sisters that have been roomates for, i would say about forty years now, who live in the queens area of nyc who run a music studio teaching young children piano, etc.. i'm almost fifty and they're one of the few "couples" that i remember as a child that are still together.. what the heck is going on here, bethel lurkers if you read this, why are they allowed to be in good standing with jehoo all these years when it's obvious what's going on.
i even asked my mother if one of her relatives had a roommate for more than 40 years and you were questioned about their relationship what would you say, and believe it or not that's one of the few times she couldn't come up with an answer to defend the cult.
even their personalities are that of a same sex couple.. i'm sure the general answer is "jehoo will take care of in time" but that just proves it's all bs.. do you guys know of any such couplings in your former kh ?

Hmmm, yeah. Welcome Shirley.
I couldn't even drive an elderly sister home by myself after a meeting. I had to take someone else, drop her off and go back to the hall and get my family home. They must have known my urge to bonk that old lady was overwhelming!
Another sign of cultish behaviour. I think the borg leadership can't even concieve a lesbian relationship. -

"...and your wife's a Jehovahs Witness?"
by bigmouth inhad to take my wife to a&e on thursday with chest pain.
(she's fine btw) the receptionist went through her personal details with me and, of course, asked if she was still a jw.
i got a little fright and quickly said "no, not any more.

That's right jgnat. It's the opposite of having to remember to update your blood card every year!
I just got the shivers about arriving at A&E and finding a deputation from the HLC there! Worse than a heart attack in my opinion :) -

It was a strange sensation for some reason and a bit scary. I don't know why.
Any similar experiences of having to notify officialdom on leaving the dubs? -

Ever notice how interested worldly friends were to hear you'd left...zzzzzz
by Gregor inthe first few years after i got my head out of my jw ass i assumed that worldly associates would be fascinated to hear of my escape....wrong.
most of them looked at me like "what the f--- are you talking about?"...
"who cares?
-

Yep. Same here. No one has the vaguest idea of what I'm talking about.
And I always thought the world was shaken by the 'seven trumpet blasts'! How arrogant! -

As a witness, how would you have handled this scripture?
by NotaNess inphilippeans 1:15-18 (nwt).
if someone you were witnessing to at a door or on the street presented you with this scripture, and told you that paul supported even false intensions about christ, in fact he rejoiced in it.
in other words if witnesses have issues with "false religion" or some church leaders(on tv) out there acting like big supporters of the gospel, but they're really in it for the money, how would you handle that paerson saying that paul rejoiced in it?
-
bigmouth
'...except that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is being publicized, and in this I rejoice."
I think the modern parallel would be 'Any publicity is good publicity'.
