G'day from Oz - My Story part II ;)
by Gemmel inhi all, (i posted most of this last night on the end of the other thread then realised no one knew it was there).
thanks for all the words of support and understanding, no one who hasn't been in a cult can really understand it.. i didn't mention names or locations in the story so that the jw lurkers couldn't find my familly who are still in the jw's but now speak to me.
which has only happened in the last few years.

Does she realise that if she changes her mind any time from here on about her choice of religion, she will be put on trial by her congregation and shunned?
Just highlighted again for anyone who missed it. 12 year old child. Locked in. No idea what she's done. Really.

LURKERS: Is JW the only true religion? Here is my personal research!
by mentallyfree31 inare jehovah's witnesses the only religion teaching the truth?.
the statement that only jehovah's witnesses are teaching the truth is an extraordinary claim.
such a claim would require extraordinary evidence.

Good work MF31. One of the best topics I've read so far this year.
Every JW should be sat down and made to read it.

If you could ask one question to an active JW to get them to open their mind about their beliefs, what would it be?
by Franklin Massey inthis question was posed to me by a poster named ice cream.
i don't know my answer yet.
it's one of those, "if you could have just one wish.." kind of questions.

A single question asked of a JW would never be enough to open their minds. Their emotional investment is too great.
By way of illustration, if you were to ask a "Witness curious" person what they would do if, as a JW, they were required to refuse a life saving blood transfusion for their child, they would likely stop and say "Wow, yeah, I think I'll give the JW's a miss"
A JW, by contrast, will likely need lots of little non-confrontational questions. And they'll probably have to be asked by himself
Welcome to the forum by the way

Why Chinese Mothers are Superior

Thanks for posting. I got through half of it and got the gist.
I suspect by "western", "American" is actually meant. The style of parenting by people from other western countries, say, even here in NZ is diverse.
I don't see a monopoly on 'good' parenting by Chinese, Japanese, Korean or other Asian people. Neither here nor those I observe on T.V. or read about. I see a different culture following the custom of earlier generations and being comfortable with the results. Good, bad or otherwise.

As you sit there are you certain that your course of life would guarantee that you are in Jehovah’s memory and you would receive a resurrection?”- Really? I always thought the teaching was 'the wages of sin is death'. Is this new light?

Preparing Scriptural Defenses Against WTBTS
by Band on the Run ini am curious whether most people here believe that they need to memorize biblical proofs against wtbts teachings the way they did as a witness.
my concern is that for someone out for decades, i may read the bible too much.
i am drawn to it almost unnaturally as for me it is the best proof the witnesses lied and willfully misinterpreted.

It strikes me that since the Witnesses apparently rely upon the Bible so much, it is the best way to perhaps start asking questions.
Therein lies your major obstacle. A Witness relies on the Watchtower, not the Bible. His default setting when confronted with a scriptural quandary is to......check the WT!

With an indoctrinated JW they are simply going to take the WTBTS explanation, no further thinking required. Thats why I don't find the need to have hundreds of scriptures memorized, they aren't going to reason anyway.
LostGeneration has it right in my opinion. Memorise and apply scripture all you want for your own benefit.
Trying to objectively discuss scripture with a Witness is an exercise in futility.
Far too much energy is expended trying to argue points with Witnesses.
