mbn36: so sorry about the loss of your uncle. I agree with you, jw funerals are pretty awful...void of any feeling at all. And non-jws don't attend those funerals to hear the jw drivel...they attend out of respect for the deceased. this is another example of how disrespectful jws are in general. I've now been to several non-jw funerals (usually wasn't allowed to go when I was a jw) and I've been so taken aback by the crying, laughing, reminiscing, etc that goes on...it's truly beautiful and a celebration of one's life. That's how I want to be remembered. Blondie: I'm curious also about GB funerals and if they are as "modest" as the typical jw funeral. perhaps you could start a new thread on this? would be interested to hear if anyone has been to one.

Dressing for Jesus or the friends at the Memorial?
by truthseeker ini've noticed on many memorial nights that the sisters will dress up like they're going to the oscars.
some seriously look like they're going to a prom.. do they dress for jesus or the friends to impress each other?.
what is it about memorial night?

OMG!! a prom dress at a convention?!?! that's crazy! hard enough just sitting through one of those things in a regular dress....can't even imagine how someone would manage the stairs and the cramped seating in a prom dress!

i think Jamelle has it right...they are compensating for not having any other holiday, celebration or tradition to dress for. when i was growing up in the borg i always thought it would be so great to be able to wear a formal dress or gown but there was never an ocassion for it and i certainly never (gawd forbid!) went to a prom. i never wore over the top attire to any meeting, assembly or memorial but i did enjoy shopping for new dresses. what else was there?? btw, to this day i've never gotten to wear a formal gown (unless you count my wedding dress).....maybe i'll crash a local prom. :)

most dubs I knew were mostly obsessed with what everyone else was doing...everyone else's spiritual weakness or maturity...everyone else's meeting attendance...everyone else's service time...everyone else's immodest or modest appearance...and on and on.

"I wanted to tell you about these great socks I bought!" huh??? socks??? she proceeds with the sock description and then tells me "i love you so much -- just wanted to say hi -- have to run now -- talk soon!" but wait!!!!, I wanted to say... where's my invite? I thought she said she loved me? :)

New to the forum - want to introduce myself
by lovelylil inhi my name is lillian and i am posting for my first time.
i was a witness along with my husband and two children for 12 years and gave in my letter of disasociation about a year and a half ago.
i have struggled with the guilt of bringing my family in contact with the witnesses (i have always been a bible searcher) and i am only coming to terms with this recently.. i now consider myself a born again believer in christ jesus and read my bible daily to check and see what is true.

Elder has Power of Attny for my Mother
by limbogirl inmy witness mother has a rare form of leukemia -- fortunately she is doing well and it hasn't been an issue yet.
she notified me some time ago that she had completed forms to make one of the elders at her kh her power of attorney in the event that she required medical treatment.
she told me that she did this to relieve me and my siblings of having to make difficult decisions for her at that time -- meaning authorizing blood.

Hi Nsrn, I'm going to see my mother in July and plan to discuss this with her then -- I would prefer to have this discussion in person. We'll see.....

Whacky Witness Weirdness
by limbogirl inok, i'm sure all of us have met some incredibly bizarre jws over the years --- i have met some that could have been characters in a movie...just unbelievably weird.
i've shared some of my stories with a good friend (non jw) and she swears i'm making this stuff up.
how in the heck could i make these people up??

I knew one strange sister who preferred to use a pot in the kitchen pantry instead of the toilet in the bathroom.
There was another sister who attended the meetings sporting a beard. Her chin hair was about 4 inches long.
Saroise --
those are pretty whacky. the pot in the pantry is GROSS. hopefully you didn't eat any meals at her house. Just curious how you found that out? did she divulge this to you or you just went in the pantry to grab a cookie and there she was?
Here's another one I thought of -- can't help it, they just keep coming today:
old sister named Irene was in our cargroup for service. somehow I got stuck sitting in the car with her by myself while the others went to a door. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, she tells me..."don't ever eat appleseeds -- they are poisonous and will kill you." then she goes on to tell me that she knew a man who killed himself by saving up a big jar of appleseeds and then eating them. I was probably eight and for years and years I would eat apples very delicately hoping I wouldn't be killed by an appleseed.
