  Were the bethelites disappointed when they moved out of Brooklyn?

  anyone know of anyone who was serving at the time of the move?

  i know a few former jw's who were at brooklyn who have told me that the actual bethel experience was kind of a drag but it was kinda cool to experience living in nyc for a couple of years.

  i visited a relative who was serving, years ago and went into the apartment he shared.

  'Served' in Brooklyn (1980s) as a married couple. We had a car for a year at the end of our 'privilege.'

  Unlimited opportunities for using the world (went to theater often, etc.).
  

  We would NOT have wanted to move to Walkill, much less to Warwick. We had in-laws at Walkill and would visit.

  Brooklyn was our preferred location, even though Keith is correct when he observes "there was little time to enjoy it when you are working in a slave labor camp."

  We could enjoy the views when working, when doing dishes duty, when doing watchman duties, when on the way to meetings, service, etc.

  if you bring someone into the truth you would get a "letter of recommendation"

  I have heard the students who were baptized referred to as a "letter of recommendation" for the person who studied with them. Never heard about the benefit you describe ("That was to show you were a person who should make it through the end times into the new world.").

  To find what was written on this (a quick search showed a few things), search on JW.org for II Corinthians 3:1.

  Blood: When an Active JW is Health POA for non-JW

  my mother has designated my sister as her ‘designated health care representative.’ my sister has sworn to my mother that, if my mother needs blood, my sister will not refuse it.

  there are no anticipated (key word) needs for blood at this time.

  my mother is in her early 80s.. my mother has never been a jw but is very familiar with all aspects of jwdom and understands the risk of my sister not allowing blood if my mother needed it.

  Road to nowhere: My sister is "in," I believe. We don't speak of "spiritual matters" (hate to employ a BS phrase like that but you know what I mean). About five years ago her elder husband, who traveled overseas for work (and other things, evidently), left the organization and left her so.... she doubled-down and is, by all accounts, a very 'active' JW. My concern (well, really, my mother's concern) is that she will be bullied into disallowing blood.

  Blondie: Identical situation where the JW child is providing most of the 'health care.' At any rate, the ‘Designated Health Care Representative’ form is being revised to state explicit that blood (if necessary) is to be administered.

  My mother has never been a JW but is very familiar with all aspects of JWdom and understands the risk of my sister not allowing blood if my mother needed it. My mother has mitigated this risk by securing my sister’s sworn promise that she will allow blood if it came to that.

  I mentioned to my mother that my sister’s promise is subject to change if she is pressured by the elders or whomever.

  To be clear, I am not suggesting that my sister NOT be the ‘Designated Health Care Representative.’ I just don’t believe that, promise to my mother notwithstanding, my sister will permit blood.

  Is anyone aware of a similar situation and, if so, with what outcome?

  so many lies, the exploitation of sincere people, the ridiculous amount of rules and all this protection of pedophiles, plus the life of gb as if they were wealthy dictators!

  From what I've read here and elsewhere, perhaps a good way forward is to be the best husband you can be and don't press too hard on her decisions. Lead by example. Live a rich, full life.

  Most will acknowledge that ‘chest-pumping’ is subjective (obviously) so I’ll leave your opinion unaddressed (by me, anyway). If you think his 23 page biography is how professionals or academics present themselves then I encourage you to read more broadly.

  Either way, his work should stand on its own merits (regardless of the length of the list of his degrees, memberships, and publications, etc.). I’m guessing he means well and I wish him the best.

  I found his work on the JWs “strained” a bit. His work is widely known by those who were reading JW mentions in academic settings when it was published (years ago). I give him credit for starting the “JW Research Journal,” even if it was less than academically rigorous.

  I’m happy for you that you have found someone to admire.

  He claims that in his bio that I linked to at the end of the OP

  I did scan the 23 page (13,431 word) ‘biography’ before I posted. Since it is somewhat chronological, I looked in the approximate area I thought it’d be mentioned. I also did a few word searches … all to no avail.

  It is a tough read. The chest-pumping is enough to make Lloyd Evans appear humble and meek. Yikes!
