Do Ex-JW men really understand women?
by Mindchild inhey guys, .
in light of our past shared watchtower delusions, especially relating to understanding women, i thought it would be interesting to see how well everyone scores compared to your real world counterparts in understanding women.. you can take the sexual aptitude test here: http://www.menshealth.com/cda/quizleadin/1,6927,s1-2-0-0-427,00.html.
no cheating now!

Who is your favorite author?
by Happythoughts in.
ayn rand is mine.
just wondering so i can find a new book or books to read *smiles*.

Geez, I almost feel out of place in stating that I don't find Rand's ideas all that great . It's good writing and there are many good points, but Immanuel Kant happens to be one of my favourite philosophers, and her books do a terrible job on describing him (the two actually would actually agree on much, though he's essentially the great satan in Objectivist literature I've read).
As far as a favourite author, I read pretty widely and I really don't have a "favourite", but for history buffs I would recommend reading John Adams by David McCullough (one of the recent books I read). It gives great insights and information into the life of a usually overlooked Founding Father.

How about every time a judge has a verdict or decision overturned by a higher court they have to pay a fine of 5000 dollars? Think they might reconsider their agenda then?
Well, aside from the constitutional untenable aspect of having judicial salaries reduced (which pretty much happens with COLA erosions anyway), wouldn't the judge just then have his decisions be at the mercy of the opinion of any three judge panel? Couldn't the appeals court or the Supreme Court have agendas as well?
So... if Congress specifically authorized the FTC to do this... how can the judge claim that they don't have the authority? That just seems patently ridiculous.
The judge must have some sort of agenda here.
If Congress abicated their power to declare war (ok, so maybe they're doing that right now ) , and made up legislation giving that power to a new agency called the National War Declaration Agency, would a federal judge declaring such an agency's power to declare war unconstitutional (due, of course, to the plain language of the constitution giving only Congress such war declaration power), even in spite of the fact that Congress agreed to such a law, be the result of the judge "having an agenda"?
This decision seems to show that congress indeed did not authorize the FTC to have the power to put together a "do not call" list, they mearly gave them the power to do something that was not specifically granted to them (i.e.: Congress authrozied the FTC to put together the list, though it's not within the FTC's power to do so). In fact, most of the judges decision was very pro-FTC, but obviously the part about shooting down the "do not call" list got a lot of attention. Personally, I don't agree with the decision, because it's too much of a technicality IMO (i.e: Congress could give the FTC the power the judge said they lacked. The FTC in their argument actually conceded that they did not expressly have the power, but that the congressional legislation clearly gave them an implied authority, which under certain conditions is enough. The judge did not think those conditions were met, though that is genuinely debatable), and it will probably be overturned on appeal, but I don't think the blasting of Judge West is really waranted. This type of decision is often made on more mundane things, but this just happened to get a lot of press. Here's a copy of the decision:
http://news.findlaw.com/hdocs/docs/ftc/donotcall92303ord.pdf
It seems that Congress has passed a bill clearly outlining the power they're giving the FTC today (who were ther 8 guys that voted "nay"?):

(Judge) West said the main issue in the case was "whether the FTC had the authority to promulgate a national do-not-call registry. The court finds it did not."
It seems to me that the judge is leaving open the possibility of a "do not call" list going through, just not under the authority of the FTC. But as was also pointed out, there are still two (possibly three) more appeals that can be made to overturn this ruling, so who knows what will happen.

LA city council approves 6 foot law for strippers
by Adam inwhat a frigging crock.
if you feel lap dances are immoral, don't get one.
if you feel they're not, you should have the opportunity to get one.

Yeah, I agree with you Adam.
But who'd have thought that a town like LA had enough people who felt so strongly against lap dancing?

Run, Sir Clark, Run...
by teejay inif he runs, he will be the most qualified of all those who now aspire to the office in 2004. if he runs, general wesley k. clark (ret.
) will be the second most qualified person to ever seek the presidency of the u.s. over the past 100 years, second only to the great william jefferson cliinton.
what follows are excerpts from an article about him in a recent esquire magazine.. he is a remarkable man with an unassailable integrity -- the kind of man that has all the little bushites shaking in their boots.

Well, Howard Dean is still my number one candidate, and I hope he gets the nomination, but I certainly wouldn't mind Gen. Clark getting it either, given what I already know of some of his political views. I saw him on an interview on Politically Incorrect on HBO, and he certainly seems like a guy who is electable.
I definitely would like to see him give some more detailed policy statements and the like of course, but so far so good.

Football predictions for "egg chasers" (NFL)
by crownboy inwell, the upcoming nfl season is about to start in two days, with my team the new york jets being involved in the opening game.
now i was a little discouraged when our starting qb chad pennington (the best in the nfl) went down earlier in the preseason with an injury that will keep him out for more than half the season, but fortunately for the jets, they're one of the few nfl teams with a backup qb that can be a quality starter, so i don't expect that we will have much of a drop off with vinny testaverde taking the reigns temporarily.
he'll surpass 40,000 career passing yards this year, and he also has a stronger arm than does pennington, so look for deep plays to the wide receivers.

(Ms. America is from Florida, just so that folks can appreciate the full impact of the number 1 reason on Letterman's top ten list).
I'm beginning to run out of feet, dubla.
Ok, so the Jets had another minor setback last Sunday. But damn it, they'll definitely beat the Cowboys on Sunday.
I wouldn't be so excited about the Fish so early. Let's not forget about the stellar September records they've had going all the way back to the Dan Marino days. They run your boy Ricky Williams 40 times on Sunday and barely won, do you really expect Ricky to keep up that pace all year? Chambers is a nice receiver (hell, I wish we had him ), but he hasn't proven that he can be a big time receiver (not withstanding his one highlight real catch a game, of course). The Jets have been down this road before. Remember the 2-5 start last season? They know how to win when it counts. The Patriots won a Super Bowl a couple of years ago despite a 1-3 start, and that will be the Jets record after Sunday.

Britney Spears Likes George Bush!!
by teenyuck inshe may have boobies; brains are another thing...... been meaning to post this for awhile....simon, i know will appreciate that his goddess has a different opinion....... http://atheism.about.com/b/a/023941.htmseptember 06, 2003. britney spears likes george bush.
many actors and entertainers have been outspoken critics of president george bush, but especially of his policies in the middle east.
quite a few have openly condemned his invasion of iraq and the subsequent occupation.

She sounds like someone who may very well be too fearful to utter any opinion other than blind support for the president for fear of being accused/abused/boycotted as many others have.
I agree with Matty. Britney Spears does not strike me as the most politically astute person, but even if she did have a well articulated position on Iraq, if that position happened to be one that expressed negative feelings toward the current administration, it would suprise me if she ever let that position be known.
