How many of you were baptised at a young age?
by lepermessiah inone thing this site has made me reflect on the baptism practice in jw land.. many of us were raised in the religion, thus you were given the pressure early on to shoot for baptism as a goal.. i remember feeling bad because i waited until the ripe old age of 14 to take the plunge.. looking back, i realize that when i was 14, i didnt even know what my favorite color was, let alone have enough knowledge to make a life altering decision.
yet, growing up in that climate, i would say anyone who waited past their early teens to get baptised was viewed with great suspicion and was likely to be viewed as "bad association".
kids who took the dip at 8-9 years of age were viewed as "wise beyond their years" and the like.. how old were some of you when you were baptised, and what are your feelings on the matter?.

The last time I gave a talk was back in 2001. I don't miss giving those things one bit, but they're so recycled I bet I could walk in a hall right now, be given a topic and formulate a talk in less than 10 minutes. Why witnesses find the TMS of any use boggles my mind now.
Is the TMS the same setup as when I was there :Talk 1, bible highlights, Talk 2-4, or has there been a change in that area?

What is the reasoning of Israelites being allowed to have concubines?
by EmptyInside inwere they all foreign women?
it seems to be contradictory too, because they weren't to have marriage alliances with other nations.
but, i guess using the woman as a sex slave and baby making machine was okay.

The reason I recall hearing is that the earth was far less populated back then, so god allowed men to have multiple wives to aid in "populating the earth", but by the time Jesus came this was no longer a concern. No idea where they got that explanation from, though.

What do you say, if someone asks if you go to church?
by Bonnie_Clyde inclyde has a great answer.
he says, "no, i take my faith too seriously.
" he says that ends the conversation.

Funny Outlaw, I love Church's chicken as well . I guess New Yorkers are a secular bunch, because that question rarely comes up. When it does, I say I don't attend and the conversation moves on.

Geez, my eyes were glazing over just reading the outline. This is indeed the same crap I used to hear when I attended. The only difference is the audience only has to suffer through this for 30 mins. instead of the 45 mins. from the days when I attended .
The title is so JW-centric I could have told you it was a JW talk title or magazine/ book title just from the buzzwords and sentence construction. Obviously, the "peace and security" is the buzzword, but even as a JW I would be amused by the statement followed by the one word question titles. This thread should be titled Attending the Special Talk- Why?

Not counting book study stuff, Mankind's Search for God, the Young People Ask book, and the Proclaimers book over like 2 months. After I got into "apostate mode" I read the Evolution or Creation book to check all the ridiculous claims firsthand. Beside that, I was a skimmer (including on the magazines), or waited untill a publication went to bookstudy.

When did public talks get reduced from 45 mins. to 30?
Why couldn't that policy have been in when I still went?

What is your biggest problem with the JW religion?
by jambon1 inif i had to be tied down i would say disfellowshipping.

Abortion Ban
by Schism ini want to pass on something to you.
i don't know where you all stand on the matter, and it is a very sensitive subject to bring up to anyone.
but you know that law that was passed the other day?

As others have pointed out on the thread, this ban only affects one method of late term abortion, and infact there is an exception if the life of the mother is at stake.
As would characterize myself as moderately pro-choice; I think there can be some restrictions on abortion without eliminating it (or virtually banning it like in the case of the repealed law from South Dakota). I don't think this ban is quite the assault on abortion rights that some view it as. The overall "right to choose" is still very much here.
