Witnesses are baptised when they are supposedly old enough to make a firm decision, and have an accurate if limited understanding of the faith. That said, given the repercussions of baptism as a JW, I feel that they allow people to be baptised far to young. I've heard of cases of people as young as 8 getting baptised, and I wouldn't be suprised to hear of even younger children taking the plunge.

So, what makes this occassion special? Well, this is really one of my last friends from my age group to get married. All my other friends have married off, or getting married off, which makes me the sole bachelor from the whole group. Don't know whether to feel excited for him, or deeply troubled that I'm still single... *sighs*
Still given my current situation, I can't exactly go out dating a worldly girl, and I have NEGATIVE interest in Witness girls at the moment. I'm between a rock and a hard place here....

Any PUBLICATION say that heavens doors were closed in 1935 ???
by run dont walk inthis seems to be jw belief, and only because rutherford said so in a talk, are there any publications that actually say that heavens doors were closed in 1935 ???
and any kind of references ???.
with the annoited class (pre 1935) getting smaller and smaller, i think in about 50 years the watchtower will have 144,000 replacements, how will they rectify this goof ???.

Interesting, is there ANY biblical evidence that supports a 1931-1935 date? Or is this just more evidentlys and apparentlys going on... They sure are getting good about using those qualifiers aren't they? *sighs*

Hrm, you are, of course, correct. But that doesn't eliminate the fact that I've heard it. Probably from an overzealous brother repeating things he heard that he shouldn't have, and adlibing it on a major part.
Although, I also heard from various people that when one of the annointed falls into apostasy or leaves the congregation they must be replaced, and that is the only way that the annointed are now selected. They are all replacements. (Again, I don't think I've ever seen that published either, so it might just be another local thing...) So, maybe the position is that the doors closed for the 144,000 in 1935, but there are still opening due to many of the annointed jumping ship?
And come to think of it, you couldn't be annointed as a baby now, either? So that means you'd have to be old enough to have been baptised in 1935 to be one of those annointed. Given an early age of baptism, say 10, that would make you 80 now.... Yikes! -

It might be a local thing, but I have definately heard this several times from the platform, even in District conventions, and so on, as late as a few years ago. I'm not sure if there is a new understanding of it or not however. All I can say is that it is there.
* Given that I heard it at a convention, it's probably on an outline, unless the brother giving the speach adlib'd that part. -

Gaps in Fossil Record Disprove Evolution? What about Gaps in Creationism?
by Reluctant Buddha inmissing links disprove a theory???.
what about this one, creationists!!!.
real t-rex .

This entire thread assumes that all creationists believe that before the Fall there where not any carnivores. That is a false assumption. Many creationists / believers in God, such as myself, believe that before and during Adams time there where animals that ate meat. The early names of these animals give credence to this statement, as they were often descriptive of the animals activities, and appropriately applied to meat eaters their qualities. I also fail to see why a Creationist, and/or Intelligent Designer, can not come to believe in the use of Evolution as a mechanism for creation, unless of course, you are discussing only those strange people that believe the Earth was created in 6 literal days.... Creationism does not supply a mechanism, only a maker.

Ok, so quotes.watchtower.ca is down, but I had did have a question for you Watchtower Historians out there. Here goes:
Was the 7 times prophecy from Daniel used before or after the Watchtower used the pyramids to predict 1914/1915?
When was the date first mentioned, where, and in what matter?
When was the "invisible return of Christ" first mentioned in reference to 1914?
Anyone know these answers, or where I can find them?
Thanks... -

Thursday night meeting woes(self sufficiency and blood)

As yours trully is still attending meeting, I thought I might vent a little on what going on.
I got there late, so I missed the first part.
First talk, about how we know the Bible is authentic, and the sources its based on. Ok, fine to sit through that. I then slept through the Bible highlights, and reading of the watchtower. (I don't know why they don't keep the Bible reading anymore...)
Then, there was a part(#3) on self-sufficiency. Apparently, self sufficiency is NOT being able to support yourself, but instead being satisfied with ONLY THE BASICS. I can understand the value of both, but redefining terms like this just irks me! Anyone else find this definition of self-sufficiency just odd?
The #4 part was about "Why we recognize sin for what it is", which was completely unrelated to the material covered in the reasoning book. (Well, not completely, but mostly.)
Sang the song.
Next part pretty inocculus stuff about being friendly to people and adaptable in the ministry. Tried to comment, but never got called on. (Gotta keep up appearances ya know)
Last part: the blood issue. Long discussion by a brother I really don't like. I tried to really, but the guy just rubs me wrong. Anyway, they are going on and on about how to coach, errr.... train, a child to defend the faith when it comes to the blood issue. End result is that the family is going to have a study in re to how to handle the blood issue at the hospital.... I still have a blood card on me, just because my folks would be far to suspicious if I didn't. Well, that and I'm still undecided in regards as to whether or not they are right on the blood issue. My current feeling is that they aren't.
Anyway, I don't know if I can take another 6 months worth of meetings. I'm pulling my hair out as it is. And even after 6 months, if I want to keep family peace, I gotta figure out a way to gracefully fade.... Oh what a tangled web we weave. -

Bryan:
I won't be able to buy your book cause of my current living situation, but I listened to your radio interview from a while back. It trully is a heart breaking story, but I thank you for sharing it. I don't know how I'll handle things when it comes time for me to be on the chopping block, but hopefully I can be as articulate as you were. -

Aren't the older quotes under expired copyright? The older quotes where far more interesting to me anyway, with the exception of the 1975 madness. I thought this was how certain parties got away with selling CD-ROMs of old watchtower literature et al. IIRC, anything prior to 1923 is wide open, and anything from 1923-1963 is wide open IF (big IF) the copyright was not renewed w/ the US. Which means that those pages can be posted in the US free and clear. (Knowing the Society, and how methodical they can be, I'm pretty sure the copyrights where renewed, but someone will have to check.) The later stuff is a definate no-no, although I've read that as a general guideline parts can be posted so long as they are under a certain percentage and the goal is to provide commentary and so on. IANAL, YMMV, etc..
