by jschwehm inhi gang:.
thanks to dave brown and the input of others we have an internet site that responds to the jehovah's witnesses' brand new book (released at their conventions this summer) entitled "what does the bible really teach?

Had a great round of golf today.
by onintwo inhey, golfers.
did ya ever have one of those days?
weather perfect, friends in your foursome funny and relaxed, striking the ball fairly well, couple round of drinks afterwards, etc, etc?

Boy do I ever miss playing golf. There is no place I'd rather be than on a golf course. My best round is 82 so I'm not great, but hopefully if I heal up next year I can look to break 80.

What's Your View of Spanking (Children)?
by minimus inhave you done it?
would you still?
is it ever acceptable?
-

I just wanted to say that my father hated spanking us kids, but he did so 'cause he felt JWs/the Bible told him to do so. How terrible, to allow other men to make you do something you feel strongly against. Not just terrible, it is immoral. Edited to clarify: My dad wasn't knowingly acting immoral, I attribute the immorality to the JWs that told him through the pages of the Watchtower to not spare the rod.

A Comparison Of Translations
by Honesty indecide for yourself how accurate the new world translation is:.

: The word “other” which it is claimed is there to clarify the scripture has no place being there, as an interlinear Bible will show
{shakes head} That's just a pathetic statement, Going from memory and brevity because of bad hands, the greek construction is similar to one found in Luke where Jesus speaks of "the fig tree, and all the [other] trees." the NWT is justified in adding "other" in brackets. again, IN MY OPINION.
Edited to add: interlinears are for the purpose of aiding further study, not to be used as proofs

sorry dan, i didn't get much past "original texts" in what you posted 'cause there aren't any. NWT translators and revisers have done a lot of scholarly work to produce a pretty decent, if wooden, translation. IMO. I'd say more but my hands are killing me today and it's very difficult to type. Maybe later I'll revisit the thread.

Children or no Children?
by Sirona inthe jws used to always have discussions about whether to have children "in this system of things".. i used to always think it was pathetic to avoid having kids because of the so-called impending armageddon.. however.
despite the fact that i've always wanted kids, right now i'm not so sure.
just look at the things happening in the world.

No kids for me. a) I'm too selfish. b) I see how older age has ravished my dad and I wouldn't ever want to have my kids see me like that and feel so sad like I do, or worse, deal with my death

Dan, why is it sick? Do you know why "other" is in the NWT? Do other religions that teach as do JWs that the comma belongs after "today" in Luke ('cause it definitely could be put there) make you equally as sick?

I very rarely contributed at the Kingdom Hall. I always stuck $20.00 in the box at assemblies or conventions. Way back in the day I always spent too much on food tickets at conventions and would always end up with leftover useless small green pieces of paper.

Well, some (read: mostly evangelicals) call the different renderings in the NWT "changes." JW/NWT apologists will say they are restorations to the original meanings and best ways to translate difficult passages. For instance, IMO they make a good case for what anti-NWTers call the "insertion" of the word "other" in Colossians 1. Best get yourself a big brown NWT reference Bible, as I can't reproduce all the Appendices here. There are a few decent pro-NWT websites out there too that deal with the criticisms against the translation, such as http://www.bibletranslation.co.sr/ . Rolf Furuli's book on bias in translation of the Bible is an interesting read (but I sold my copy on ebay).
