There was a guy in our church who is a pathological liar. Our minister confronted him. He denied the charge/made up explinations for all the lies. It was just SOO obvious he was lying that you could catch him even with small things. So the consensus was made among all of us close to him that we would just speak and be polite to him but as long as he continued to be dishonest, we wouldn't invite him to stuff after church. No embarassment was done to him ... and he did leave the chuch. He called me last week to catch up on things. I talked to him for a bit and then let him go. I later found out he lied to me in that very conversation. So the "discipline" done to him wasn't cultish. It was what anyone would do to a friend who was untruthful with them. I did hear in a sermon once to explain that scripture about not even saying a greeting to someone preaching false doctrine. He said that "not saying a greeting" was a phrase they used to mean that they endorsed the person who was going to speak to them and then he would be allowed to preach in front of doctrine. Absense of a greeting meant not endorsing this man anymore and treating him like a pagan. They would have still been polite and all -- just not have invited them in to have dinner with their family.

Is shunning scriptural? At all?
by Open mind init's obvious that the jw view of shunning goes way beyond anything called for in the bible.
1 cor 5:11-13 says,(nwt) "but now i am writing you to quit mixing in company with anyone called a brother that is a fornicator or a greedy person or an idolater or a reviler or a drunkard or an extortioner, not even eating with such a man.
for what do i have to do with judging those outside?

I was a 5th generation JW. I still have faith and God and in the Bible. I found that Baptists were the closest to what seemed to be the religion the Bible was talking about to me. But I don't think that only Baptists are right like I did think about JWs when I was a JW. Baptists don't freak out about the details but decide that God will reveal things when its time. They hold strict to the identity of God and salvation by faith alone. I have learned that was was important to a JW is not important to me now. And what wasn't important to me as a JW is important to me now. Jesus is central to my life now but as a JW I hardly knew Him... So there's one person to add to your statistics.

Oh thank you so much. You all are just precious. Update: My mother sent me another e-mail after a week of silence to say: "I quit my job and found a new one far away. I have to get out of here." So...I asked where and I got: "Don't worry about me" So I asked where again .... to get not response. I would love for the drama to just stop. I think she wants me to worry.

I am a Southern Baptist The "We" is referring to my religion
I'll answer your questions:
I've noticed many of you that have your own ministry. I'm curious as to what doctrines you teach. Is it "Jesus is Love." and that's it or does it go deeper? If you could, please post your basic beliefs concerning these topics:
Most of the questions you ask are not of the most important. The most important thing is what Jesus did for us and the fact that we are saved by faith alone. (works are only a fruit of our faith -- faith comes first). Eternal life is a free gift. By living a life of faith, it causes you to value the principles of the Bible. If you are living by faith you will live a Godly life. But obeying rules does not come first.... We are not saved by the deeds we do or don't do. . Jesus already paid the penalty for our sins and we acccept that gift of eternal life by living in faith.
1. What happens to a person when they die?
They are in an intermediate state (one we do not know much about other that the spirit is with God) and then at the resurrection, we receive our glorifed bodies and live in heaven (the great crowd is in heaven -- Rev 19:1) All of us get to take advantage of the new heavens and the new earth after the 1,000 years.
2. Who is God and what is his name?
God is a Trinity -- Jehovah, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit
3. Why is there suffering in the world?
God allows it so we can learn lessons -- understand the bad so we can understand the good when we get to heaven. Also it is a conseequence of free will.
4. How did we get here?
God created us.
5. According to the Bible, is it okay to participate in wars and politics?
Jesus did not ever critisize those in the military. In fact he told a soldier to go and do his job honorably. We vote according to who witholds our values.
6. Is the Devil real? If so, where did he come from?
Same belief as JWs only we believe that God knew it was going to happen and wasn't ignorant to the consequences of his actions.
7. According to your religion, is it okay to smoke marijuana?
No -- its against the law.
8. According to your religion, is it okay to have pre-marital sex?
no
9. According to your religion, how do God feel about homosexuals?
I think that we all have sins we struggle with -- homosexuals are no worse than someone who cheats on their taxes.
10. Does God talk to you personally?
Not audibly. I believe he helps me, answers my prayers and teaches me things.
Thanks for your serious responses.

screw 'em all. Let's get down to important details. Where are you registered? Anything online? How many brides maids? Colors? Flowers? I like all those details - I don't have to go to the wedding to enjoy the process.
I am registered at Belk and Dillard's.
I have 5 attendants -- 3 bridesmaids, 1 MAN of honor, and 1 flower girl. Their dresses are on my myspace page but I couldn't link to the pictures since myspace is down at this very second. www.myspace.com/reneeinms My dress pictures are there too. I have a cathedral veil with a long train on my white dress. My flowergirl is wearing a ivory dress. The bridesmaids are wearing navy blue dresses with ivory sashes. The flowers are pink, ivory, blue, and white. My bouquet has lillies, orchids, and pink roses. Picture (only imagine in pink): http://www.ftdfloristsonline.com/withersflorist/product.html?website_id=505545495249496565&source=&product_id=W15-3586&catalog_website_id=&index_id=fol_party The tuxes are black with navy blue vests/tie. The wedding is in my church's chapel. The church is an old church that is all freshly remodled. Kind of gothic looking on the outside. It holds about 200 people. I am expecting about 75 to the wedding. The chapel is mostly all wood with stained glass windows. 2 Ferns, 1 big flower arrangement, and bows and flowers just on the first two pews. And wooden candle thingies (I can't remember what you call them!!) My apostate cousin is walking me down the aisle. His wife is going to be my pretend mother. The programs have a cross and wedding rings and "Our Wedding Service" embossed on the front. The names of people and songs are inside. A poem about Jesus being the center of our marriage is on the back. (I had to do the cross on purpose.) I considered having marriage is God's arrangement played and then after all of this commotion I decided that the song might make me puke and I went with another song that I can't remember the name of but its a typical wedding song. The reception is in the fellowship hall in the church. The cake is 3-tiered hexigon shaped. The topper is flowers (I never have liked the figurines on the top of the cake) It has those columns between the layers. The groomscake is 2 tiers with chocolate covered strawberries The napkins are ivory with dark blue writing. It says "And the two shall become one ... Kevin and Renee.... June 30, 2007" The tables have a tall flower arrangement in the center. The wedding favors are kissing bells (the bells that everytime people ring the bells we have to kiss). We are having a sit down catered meal. The menu is: Chicken Phyllo Cups Smoked Beef Tenderloin served with Jezebel Sauce and rolls Shrimp Cocktail Spread served with Crackers Hot Artichoke & Bacon served with Triscuits MS Sin Dip served with Fritos Fresh Vegetables served with Ranch Dressing Seasonal Fruit served with Amaretto Crème DipCubed Cheese

Postcard is a good idea!
And my grandparents were always so sweet. They were superdubs but they would always stand up for what was "right" and wouldn't try to just please everyone. My grandpa actually told me once that I could take the Christmas present from my employer because I earned it. He is the presiding overseer. I think they really are doing what they think is right. They are just brainwashed. BADLY.....
My mom has hurt me her fair share. When she hurts she wants me to hurt. She is the best out of all of them but my mom is just as brainwashed as any of them. She just happens to love me very much at the same time.
My dad thinks he's loving me by shunning me... strange people.

Your Personality is Very Rare (ENTJ) Your personality type is energetic, romantic, optimistic, and brave.
Only about 4% of all people have your personality, including 3% of all women and 5% of all men
You are Extroverted, Intuitive, Thinking, and Judging.I took a long several hundred question test a few months ago before starting counseling and the test said I was ENTJ

Maybe some time after the wedding, you could write a letter to your grandparents and express your gratitude to them for showing you, yet again, that you made the right decision to DA from the JWs, considering that they cannot show love and reasonableness that you have come to expect from real Christians. There's nothing quite as humbling for a JW than to hear that they have failed in being loving, when love could have motivated them to very simply politely decline your invitation out of deference to their beliefs. No, they had to go beyond that, and deliver the one-two punch to the gut in order to make their point.
I really am considering writing them a letter. The deal though would be that I need to do it in a way that they would read it before they knew what it was. I'm sure if they could tell who it came from, they wouldn't read it. Any ideas? And I can' t sign it so that they don't see my name and refuse to read it. I do like the message you suggested.
Maybe:
Thank you for showing me yet again that I made the right decision considering that you could not show the love and reasonableness that I have come to expect from real Christians. Love would have motivated you to simply decline the invitation.

Ask your grandparents if they would come to your funeral if you died, and if they say yes, then ask them to explain why.
I haven't spoken to them since I DAed. My grandmother sent me a farewell letter saying that "I think I would be smart enough to know if I was being lied to"
AT LEAST NOW YOU KNOW WHERE YOU STAND... YOU KNOW WHO YOUR TRUE FAMILY IS... AND YOUR BIG DAY WILL BE HAPPIER WITHOUT PEOPLE SITTING THERE CRITICIZING
I knew where I stood -- But the truth to it all is that the only person out of all of them that I actually want to come is my mother. She still loves me and I know it. I really seriously don't want everyone sitting there criticizing either. I was kinda releaved when my mom sent me an email telling me that her and Dad couldn't go. Less drama.
News: My mom sent me an e-mail that Dad wanted her car back so she gave it to him and went and bought her a 2007 toyota. It looks like its serious -- I was kind of unsure before. Its hard to tell from an e-mail how serious something is.
