hs:
it was so obviously a planned attack on AlanF's posting style by those whose noses he had bloodied in the past.
Well, I don't recall that thread in that particular perspective, although at that time, and since, Alan and I had several very spirited discussions off-board along those lines (re: his posting style). We still respectfully agree to disagree in certain respects...though I've found myself gravitating somewhat toward his way of thinking, especially insofar as how to best respond to "certain" posters.
There are so many dimensions to this, I won't even attempt to try to address them comprehensively. But, as just one case-in-point:
A JW comes on board and makes strong assertions right out of the gate, (very probably) expecting to deliver a knock-out blow to doubters and apostates. Four possibilities:
1) The first responses are "You are an idiot and a fool." This will, of course, confirm his/her suspicions about the negative attitude of apostates, and the interaction will (usually) quickly terminate.
2) The first responses are "Hello, and have you considered this or that?"
3) As a result of scenario 2), the JW demonstrates a willingness to intelligently consider the opposing arguments, and the interaction becomes truly a discussion.
4) As a result of scenarion 2), the JW demonstrates an unwillingness to consider opposing arguments, using the WTS as his/her sole authority (not an unlikely possibility), and dismissively ignores the valid and logical points being made by other posters. Eventually, it reaches the point that one feels like one is talking to a fence post (otherwise known as idiot, fool, moron, or dipf**k). In this situation, I can no longer say that I disagree with such a categorization.
Just a couple of thoughts, fwiw.
edit to add: The reason this particular example struck me is that I can speak with some measure of personal experience along these lines. Although I'd been df'd for some years before I first posted on JWD, and even though I knew that I would never again be a JW, I was still permeated with so much of the conditioning and perspective of my upbringing that I didn't even see it in myself. Option 1) above would have totally put me off (as it did when I first visited H2O), and my first post here could well have been my last. Fortunately, I ended up responding as and being "treated" (both on- and off-board), along the lines 2) and 3).
