hang on, folks.
if a) is true then god is arbitrary: anything he says is right, is right.
so you admit that gods decisions are purely arbitrary?.
hs to BA:
I note that the last few days you have been quoting logical fallacy errors ad nauseum
I disagree.
BA has been going on like this for far more than a few days, eh?
BA, if you don't actually answer the questions put to you on this thread, and many others besides, then, imho, you are no more intelligent than OBVES.
TD:
In the U.S. no organization can openly forbid their members from joining the military. That would arguably be a violation of U.S. Code Title 18, Section 2387 (i.e. Treason)
Thank you for providing that definitive information.
Could you perhaps c/p that section of the Code? I'd be interested to actually read it.
this may seem like a shameless plug for www.freeminds.org.
but it's not.. randy has been a source of significant information for me (and countless others) over the last decade(s), and very recently sent me (at his expense) some additional information about the wts.. now, one thing i must say is that randy and i do not share the same ideologies about religious perspectives.
but, ya know what?
For those who may know of Randy's health issues over the years (and Randy, please forgive me if I'm speaking out of place here)...he's doing pretty darn good, for a man as old as he is (my age LOL).
Now, if he can just get cleared out from all the Malibu firestorm ashes and smoke!
skyking is right.
The WTS has never df'd anybody for joining the military, as that would be an act of treason. Likewise, no one has ever been officially df'd for voting (to my knowledge).
Before the early 80's, someone who joined the military would be announced as having disassociated themselves. After that, da'ing became equivalent to df'ing, in terms of the congregational consequences, but without the official castigations that would otherwise get the WTS in deep shit with federal authorities.
Edit to add: Our posts crossed...like NN said.
we're in the middle of a little windstorm here (portland, or).
not much of one, really, compared to some of the others i've experienced here.. about 11 p.m. bikerchic and i heard something hit the house, and there was a pretty good thud on the ground.
i thought that it was probably just a big branch, but bikerchic came running in and said: "did you hear that?
The "tree guys" took down the other trees on our south side that were ready to fall.
Boy oh boy, it's amazing to watch pros do their work! I just put my hands in my pockets and watched them do their thing!
I got some good pics, and if bikerchic has the time, she'll post them.
Now we have a lumberjack dude who's gonna bring out his portable sawmill this weekend, and slab up the trunks. At least we're able to give these beautiful trees a dignified death, instead of just turning them into firewood.
btw, I found out that what we have here is "aromatic" cedar, not red cedar.
let's assume for the moment that god decides what is good and what is bad.
does he 'a' choose what is good because it is obviously good or 'b' is it good simply because he says so?
if 'a' then what is good is independant of god and he has no choice but to accept it as good.. if 'b' then the definition of what is good is arbitrary - god could decide that child abuse was good and it would be because he said so.. clearly this is ridiculous because we all recognise child abuse to be a bad thing and that is why god would never label it as good.
BA, I/we would be very interested in your understanding of "God-breathed."
Not just your usual bullshit handwaving, but a meaningful examination of the original language and usage.
Are you up to it?
Or will you pull out an OBVES defense?
hang on, folks.

BA:
1- Farkel's original post that started this thread was answered, and proven false.
No, it wasn't, and certainly not by you.
Anyone who has reading comprehension can see this.
I/we have a fair bit of reading capabilities. Your generalization betrays your own lack of comprehension.
2- Farkel's original post that started this thread is a FALSE_DILEMMA, so his argument is logically fallacious.
So you summarily dismiss the logic of people much more intelligent than you or I, who have examined such issues? How condescending of you.
3- Farkel's inability to show that he can comprehend what he reads is apparent not only in his refusal to address JWD posters by their screen name, but by his missing the fact that his most recent post on this thread was already answered in my last post. I'm not repeating myself to someone who behaves like a snotty nosed child throwing a tantrum.
Farkel's latest post in this thread demonstrates that he has the behavior and reading comprehension of a child.
I rather suspect that he may have another perspective to offer.
BA- My last post on this thread. Farkel's questions have been answered as well as proven fallacious.
I dare suspect that this will not be your last post to this thread, unless you are a simple-minded coward.
Edit to add: Posts crossed, and BA, you proved my point. You can't let this go any more than you could cut off your thumb.
PS- hillary_step and onacruise, get a room already.
You are here with us, in the same room. So, as we sit on the sofa, discussing such things, you have the option of actually addressing the issues, or, perhaps, to just get up and give us the finger and leave.
when i started posting this morning it struck me that i was in the company of others around the world who were just getting up or going to bed.
one can actually see when the brits have hit the forum - like now .
do you post from home or work or both?.
LOL w/ emo!
When I last talked with Ian, we were at odds about which of us got less sunshine. Now that the trees are gone from our backyard, I think we have the upper hand, and may even have a decent garden next year.
Ian, be as jealous as you like! roflmao
is it possible to have your eyes wide open and not be able to see?
when facts prove us wrong can we change?
when we can't it is call cognitive dissonance.. which came first the chicken or the egg?
Trygon:
Well as a athiest I am sure you can provide us Christians with solid evedence that Jesus did not exist.
That's a valid observation. I submit that trying to prove that Jesus did not exist is as futile as trying to prove that he did exist.
After all, we're talking about things that happened 2000 years ago, and therefore all we can do is to take the testimonies of other people.
In that same line of thought, we could just as easily accept, or question, the validity of the Golden Plates of Joseph Smith: several people (much more contemporary than the Biblical apostles) swore before God that they saw and handled those Plates, but today these artifacts, and those witnesses, are nowhere to be found.
