There is a documentary series on Netflix called 'Genius' i think. One of the episodes was on the development of the revolver during the civil war and basically the business competition that was taking place and driving the firearm technology. I highly recommend it to pro and anti gun folks. If you don't understand WHY america is a deeply ingrained "gun culture" that should help. It became a fabric of society in america during that time. Answers a lot of questions about 'why' America embraced the gun.
And as for america modern day issues with it, as I mentioned before the loopholes should be closed in the law, but also much more complicated to address is that the United States is not a homogenous society, but rather a melting pot that occasionally boils over; there is a large economic underclass; there is a weak net to catch those who are struggling; gang culture.
