People taking advantage of the system through fraud does make my blood boil.
I am sick at home today instead of playing golf (dammit!) and I just got through watching (2nd time) Inside Job. Compared to the excesses of greed and thievery on Wall Street, I can't get too exercised by 'welfare queens.'

Do some people "play the system"? Of course. Just like the more affluent play THEIR systems (i.e., inside trading, ponzi schemes, the whole credit/housing mess).
Good point, Shelby. Most people are only peripherally aware of the fraud in high places, and shrug it off as "What're you gonna do?" But for sheer outrage and venom-spewing - nothing beats taking apart a poor, ignorant, pathetic welfare mom who never had a chance and is trying to get by on $1200 a month. Many otherwise intelligent people actually believe that it's the welfare minorities who are the cause of our economic woes.

I've always wondered if the organization actually creates unfeeling sociopaths or if it is unfeeling sociopaths who are attracted to the organization.
In either case, JWs are a cold-hearted bunch. Some of them even seem to delight in anticipating the punishment of their fellowmen at Armageddon
to the point of personally doling out judgment peremptorily.

Unfortunately, there is no compensating factor in these situations - loss is loss.
My best friend said to me at the time, "We've been through some stuff, haven't we?" The implication was that we'd get through this tragedy like we'd gotten through divorce, job loss, busted romances, etc. Somehow, in my hyper-sensitive state, it rubbed me wrong because the death of a child is not something one 'gets over.'
The best thing to say is just, "I'm so sorry. I can't imagine what you're going through" (because no one can).

My heart goes out to all who have experienced this 'secondary loss' - the loss of one's faith in ordinary human compassion at a time when it is most needed. It adds such a burden when one is struggling just to put one foot in front of the other. It feels like betrayal to have your grief minimized - betrayal is defined as 'violation of a presumptive contract.' You presume a certain level of sensitivity in those closest to you, but until it is put to the test by tragedy it is just that - a presumption.
I lost my 24 year old son nearly 6 years ago. The things said and done I can't begin to recount, but it seems that, because people are at a loss for what to say, they are uncomfortable. And their discomfort begins to make them angry. They are conflicted because they can't very well show anger towards a grieving mother, though some do. Many just drift away and thus avoid dealing with it altogether.
Strangely, it can be those closest to you who cannot find it within themselves to sit with your grief and all its manifestations. Fortunately, there are others you might have least expected to be there for you, who come through.
