I beg your pardon, but your breast is in my eye!!!

ok, so i'm at the dentist this afternoon - nothing major, just something i've been putting off for a while - and the dental assistant is doing her thing with my teeth - my mouth is wired open (i think i was able to tune into radio transmissions for a while) - and i've got my eyes closed, my glasses off, trying to relax in the chair, while listening to the piped in muzak.. suddenly, i can tell she's really getting into her work - she's leaning against my face and getting quite vigorous about whatever she's doing to my tooth.

then it dawned on me.... ummm... hello.... your breast is in my eye!!!

except my mouth is frozen and wired so that all that's coming out is unintelligible garble... and drool (from being wired open, not because it's the least bit "interesting").. so i'm thinking to myself, if i push her away from my face, she looks the type that would clock me for sexually harassing her... if i say anything to her about it, she'll be embarrassed and might screw up my tooth... if i wait a couple more minutes, she'll be done and i might have an interesting story to share with mr scully... finally, it occurs to me that they said i could give them a signal to stop what they are doing.

When you said your mouth was wired open, I started to think you were going to say that the breast had possibly ventured elsewhere on your face.....

<<I love it. That and when I used to have hair to cut rather than shave it all off, and the lady would be pushing her breasts into my back or shoulder while cutting my hair>>

Right out of High School, I became a hairdresser. Made great tips---and come to think of it, the boys always wanted their hair shampooed, even though it was extra. Oh, I just remembered this guy who came in from the Carnival that was in town!! I kid you NOT---a CARNIEE!! Because I was the new girl, I got Bubba. As I was reluctantly shampooing him, he said, "you sure are purty". EEEEK EEEEEK EEEEEK!!!

    Too funny.

    Thanks for the laugh!!

ok, so maybe i should've asked this a long time ago, but i'm a little slow sometimes.

my apologies for being uneducated in this particular area.

hey, i'm still learning, that's why i'm here.. i've seen a lot of references to mosaic law here on the board, but i'm a little unclear as to what it is, what it says, what it means, and who it applies to.

the short of it: The Laws given from bible god to the Israelites at Mt. Sinai via Moshe (Moses--hence Mosaic) instituting the covenant between that G-d and the Jewish people.

    The Long of it:

    The 613 Mitzvot

At the heart of halakhah is the unchangeable 613 mitzvot that God gave to the Jewish people in the Torah (the first five books of the Bible). The word "mitzvah" means commandment. In its strictest sense, it refers only to commandments instituted in the Torah; however, the word is commonly used in a more generic sense to include all of the laws, practices and customs of halakhah, and is often used in an even more loose way to refer to any good deed.

Some of the mitzvot are clear, explicit commands in the Bible (thou shalt not murder; to write words of Torah on the doorposts of your house), others are more implicit (the mitzvah to recite grace after meals, which is inferred from "and you will eat and be satisfied and bless the LORD your God"), and some can only be ascertained by Talmudic logic (that a man shall not commit incest with his daughter, which is derived from the commandment not to commit incest with his daughter's daughter).

Some of the mitzvot overlap; for example, it is a positive commandment to rest on the Sabbath and a negative commandment not to do work on the Sabbath.

Although there is not 100% agreement on the precise list of the 613 (there are some slight discrepancies in the way some lists divide related or overlapping mitzvot), there is complete agreement that there are 613 mitzvot. This number is significant: it is the numeric value of the word Torah (Tav = 400, Vav = 6, Resh = 200, Heh = 5), plus 2 for the two mitzvot whose existence precedes the Torah: "I am the LORD, your God" and "You shall have no other gods before Me". There is also complete agreement that these 613 mitzvot can be broken down into 248 positive mitzvot (one for each bone and organ of the male body) and 365 negative mitzvot (one for each day of the solar year).

The most accepted list of the 613 mitzvot is Maimonides' list in his Mishneh Torah. In the introduction to the first book of Mishneh Torah, Maimonides lists all of the positive mitzvot and all of the negative mitzvot, then proceeds to divide them up into subject matter categories. See List of the 613 Mitzvot.

Many of these 613 mitzvot cannot be observed at this time for various reasons. For example, a large portion of the laws relate to sacrifices and offerings, which can only be made in the Temple, and the Temple does not exist today. Some of the laws relate to the theocratic state of Israel, its king, its supreme court, and its system of justice, and cannot be observed because the theocratic state of Israel does not exist today. In addition, some laws do not apply to all people or places. Most agricultural laws only apply within the Land of Israel, and certain laws only apply to kohanim or Levites. The modern scholar Rabbi Israel Meir of Radin, commonly known as the Chafetz Chayim, has identified 77 positive mitzvot and 194 negative mitzvot which can be observed outside of Israel today.

Gezeirah: A Fence around the Torah

A gezeirah is a law instituted by the rabbis to prevent people from accidentally violating a Torah mitzvah. For example, the Torah commands us not to work on the Sabbath, but a gezeirah commands us not to move a object only used to perform prohibited work (such as a pencil, money, a hammer), because someone handling the implement might forget that it was the Sabbath and perform prohibited work.

It is important to note that from the point of view of the practicing Jew, there is no difference between a gezeirah and a Torah mitzvah. Both are equally binding. The difference is just in the severity of punishment: a Torah violation of the Sabbath is punishable by death, while a rabbinical violation of a gezeirah is punishable by whipping.

Another difference between a gezeirah and a mitzvah is that the rabbis can, in rare appropriate circumstances, modify, or abrogate a gezeirah. Rabbis cannot change the Torah law that was commanded by God.

Takkanah: A Law Instituted by the Rabbis

Halakhah also includes some laws that are not derived from mitzvot in the Torah. A takkanah is a law that was instituted by the rabbis. For example, the "mitzvah" to light candles on Chanukkah, a post-biblical holiday, is a takkanah. The practice of public Torah readings every Monday and Thursday is a takkanah instituted by Ezra.

Some takkanot vary from community to community or from region to region. For example, around the year 1000 C.E., a rabbi instituted a prohibition of polygyny, a practice clearly permitted by the Torah and the Talmud. It was accepted by Ashkenazic Jews, who lived in Christian countries where polygyny was not permitted, but was not accepted by Sephardic Jews, who lived in Islamic countries where men were permitted up to four wives.

A takkanah, like a gezeirah, is just as binding as a Torah mitzvah.

Blah blah blah, if ya ask me....but works for some people.

hi,ummm ive just discovered this site and im not sure why im even writing this but im at rockbottom and i dont know how feel, maybe im just searching to find someone who might understand and help me understand because i feel so alone and ashamed, confused and sad, even people might find me bad because of how these events turned...but im not bad inside, ive always been such a soft caring person at heart,im a good person just always been lost, alone and confused....ill try not babble too much but from the beggining dad was here one minute, not the next and then not at all,to this day still never bothers, mum remarried when i was about 4,this was the guy who sexually abused me at 7,{mum never knew},they had a baby together...i found my brother dead in his cot,he died from cotdeath, and it was just all downhill from there with my life, that was after my brother i was abused by him....they split when i was around 8 and i guess my mum looking back now on it now just went on her own mission but it wasnt easy for me,she fell for another guy and we moved from one place to the next, every time i started a new school and made friends,it was time pack up and go and start all over.....

mum settled again and remarried a third time when i was around 12,id started a new high school, maybe its just those teens but i went off the rails with mum,i was terrible, didnt mean to be,but i blamed her for all my hurt and life and id rebel at everything, drinking started, running away started and i just wish now i could have felt close when alls i wanted was to love and be loved back...the next bit until now{im 25 now} is what is killing more than ever and id very much appreciate your thoughts because im lower than ever and still scared....mum is very much here in my life now...its only been a few months but shes heartbroken and the love and understanding has been tremendous off her,she blames herself but i blame me.....

when i started the new highschool i met this girl, she became my friend at the time and it was so good to have a friend id do anything she said....anyway she needed some money once and said i know this guy you can come to with me and he will pay you to touch your boobs, thats when it started i agreed because if i said no then shed probably laughed at me,so i went....,it sounds strange{he was nearly 50} but he was very very nice, and said i dont like the person whos brought you up here, shes nasty...,i hated him touch me but i was scared....but at same time i felt i could really trust him,me and this girl never did stay friends....theres another big big part in all of this, but from 13 this guy became the bestest friend i ever had in my whole life, but everything was a big secret, its lasted years...he had an hold over me,though i knew he was supposed be my friend i knew he musnt really be one else he wouldnt put me through the torture of crying and not coping when i had my baby...my babe is 8now but still when i let him touch my boobs so i can buy the best part of my life something nice or take him somewhere that man would buy bigger and better and undermine all my hurt....

Do you think that "Armaggeddon"/Hellfire damnation" is just scare tactics?

many people have come to believe that the churches, religions or the world today just use "punishment" as a form of scare tactic to get controll over people.

i am beginning to think maybe these people are right.

it is hard for me to believe that a "loving" god would destroy 6 billion people just to save a "few" people at armaggeddon.

I sometimes wonder if the human collective is a macro (or is it a micro) cosm of the human individual; growing through different stages. When the human individual is young, they are fed fairly tales and "scare tactics" to warn them of the "dangers" of the world (mostly other humans) around them. They cannot comprehend larger truths of these fairy tales until they are older and able to deconstruct them.

That's what I think different religions (simplistic answers to explain the vast complexity of our Universe), colored through the glasses of mythos. They serve their purpose but I feel (I hope) that we're evolving collectively past the need for the scary crapola.

    Just my 2 cents,

    ~Brigid
