Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is what we exhale when we breathe. Trees breathe the C02 and give off oxygen.

I am a brick layer in Kansas, and probably some of the mexicans who work for me have false papers. However, I pay them all very well, the lowest paid is 13.00 per hour.

If your son would go to work in the construction industry, I am sure that he could get a good job and even work it into a trade for him. I would avoid roofing and concrete, but brick work, trim carpentry, plumbing, etc. are looking hard for young men to train and have in the trade.

Good luck. If your son was here, I would hire him.

another international slate of scientists have released their findings regarding global climate change and human's effect on that (see the above link).. after the last major study released by several hundred scientists a few months ago, it does seem there is a serious concensus here among the leading thinkers and scientists on this issue.

i know i've banged heads with a few who disagree with this, but it does seem as though that handful of folks who disagree with the science are looking more and more like deniers, as in holocaust deniers, moon landing deniers, etc.. in other words, out there on the lunatic fringe.. so, do you folks think it might be time to reconsider?.

As I am reading this, I can see very respectful and intelligent people coming to different conclusions.

I have always respected Auld Soul, as well as seeker 4. Both of you seem to be able to deal very well with highly scientific and technical discussions.

Not to be funny or trite, though, I have a question:

If global warming is a "given", and it really is taking place, just EXACTLY how much has the average temperature of the earth increased?

In Crichton's book, if memory serves me correctly, the charts and graphs that I saw indicate a rise in temperature of about .08 degrees Celsius.

Also, is it fair to pinpoint a 10 or 20 year period of earths geologic history and really draw solid conclusions? I am 60, and I do remember in high school in the 1960's being taught that global cooling was imminent and that another ice age was on the way. This comment is anecdotal and not to be considered evidence, but I do remember it.

One thing that I would respectfully share with Seeker 4 is that in one of his posts, he quoted the New York Times. My political views tend to come from the conservative end of the spectrum, and I would have little, if any, respect for the NY Times as an accurate reporter of Scientific fact. Please, Seeker 4, don't mischaracterize this comment as an attack on you. I like the way you are respectfully discussing the issue.

There is another thread about global warming that is currently going on in this discussion group, and while it too has a wide range of opinions, there are a lot of scientific references being given that is food for thought.

Auld Soul, I do appreciate your scholarly approach to such a wide array of discussions. Thank you always for your fine mind and extremely clear way of expressing yourself.

Who said anything about votes? And is it settled by the uninformed? If we disregard the opinions of scientists what do we have to go on? Is kitchen-table logic going to give us the answer?

There are a lot of scientists and a lot of opinions.

All I said was that Michael Crichton wrote a novel about global warming, and used "facts" that diminished the argument for global warming.

I am sure you are smarter that I am and can argue a lot better, as all I am is an old bricklayer.

I recently read a novel, "State of Fear", by Michael Crichton.

It is written for our current times, but he uses a lot of scientific data from all over the world in the writing of the novel.

Have you happened to read it?

It has a lot of 'proofs' that really diminish the argument for global warming.

I would appreciate your opinion.

Memorial 2007

well i just got back from the memorial, after being dragged along somewhat reluctantly.

during the talk, one statement in particular caught my attention which i hadn't heard previously.

the speaker was explaining why probably no-one there should be partaking of the matzo and wine, because on the night of the passover jesus began selecting his 144000 heavenly co-rulers starting with the 11 apostles who were present - and that from then on, most of jesus' other followers just observed and did not partake, recognizing that they were of the earthly class.

It's probably only in JW circles that there's any debate. I have no idea what other religions say on the matter. But I'll quote for you the JW reasoning on this.

Insight on the Scriptures Vol.2, Pg. 130;

'Immediately Judas left the group. A comparison of Matthew 26:20-29 with John 13:21-30 indicates that he departed before Jesus instituted the celebration of the Lord's Evening Meal. Luke's presentation of this incident evidentally is not in strict chronological order, for Judas had definitely left by the time Christ commended the group for having stuck with him; that would not fit Judas, nor would he have been taken "into the covenant... for a kingdom." Luke 22:19-30'

The WT reasoning is wrong here. Judas was apparantly present according to LUKE, but later left BEFORE THE SECOND COVENANT was made, the COVENANT FOR A KINGDOM.

A casual or serious reading of the account will easily clear this up. 'Course, what did Luke know, he was only there.

i wonder.

a very typcal witness may see the obvious negatives that jws know they have.

they might acknowledge that there's often a lack of love, that the elders can be demanding, that "new light" can change long cherished beliefs in an instant.......but still they cling on and resist any sort of intellectual discussion as to why the witnesses are off soooooo many times.....what gives??

I think that you wrote a profound comment above:

I've come to believe that JWs are all about relationships, just like any other group of people. You can argue that it's a cult, that they practice mind-control, and so on, but every organized group of people does share beliefs, thinking, behaviior and social concepts. People form relationships by opening up and sharing the space that normally exists between them (what one usually calls "my space") and that forms a bond, almost a third person - a combination of the two people in the relationship (what we call "us").

To leave the dubs, you have to withdraw from that common space. That leaves two personalities where there used to be three. There's you and him, or her, but there's no longer any "us."

Ths is what makes the process so hard, and so painful. Throw in the whole "God's chosen ones" thing and the attendant guilt trip, and you've got a difficult wall to climb. That's why dubs who know better, stay in.

You really nailed what I have been thinking with your quote above. Just think, with one sentence they have successfully attacked and destroyed their OWN faithful and discreet slave doctrine.

They teach that the faithful and discreet slave is all of the anointed on earth at any one time, and yet they make the disclaimer that they have no special insight or special spirituality.

I wonder if the r and f will put this together?

it was a justification for all the young GB members.

It was also a profound rejection of their own "faithful and discreet slave" teaching, in that they said there was nothing at all special about partakers. By their definition they have rejected their own slave.

Does anybody in the org think at all?
